This has been my favorite soda (family owned restaurant that serves typical Costa Rican food) since I moved to Playa del Coco five and a half years ago. I prefer this soda over other local eats because they are fast, fresh, consistent, very friendly family owned business, and less expensive.
In the mornings the typical Costa Rican breakfast is Gallo Pinto. (Here is your brief typical Costa Rican food guide....) Gallo Pinto is usually ordered with eggs (huevos) - your style - scrambled (picado) or fried (frito) and/or with typical cheese (queso) and/or the YUMMY natilla (sour cream, much better than the sour cream in the USA) and either hand made tortilla or maduro (fried sweet plantain!!!)
In addition to the typical Costa Rican breakfast of Gallo Pinto con huevos y natilla y tortilla (my order a couple times a week,) they have pancakes, fruit platter, cereal, bacon, sausage and other breakfast eats. Breakfasts are around $5.
For lunch, the Ticos usually order a casado, which is basically a marriage of foods sharing one plate. Casados always come with beans and rice, then you choose your meat, (or order vegetarian with avocado, egg, cheese, etc.) of usually carne en salsa (beef with sauce), pollo en salsa (chicken with sauce), cerdo (pig/pork), filet de pescado (fillet of fish), and they may have more options than that. I usually order the Casado con filet de pescado or the Casado Vegetariano. It is usually on the table in 5 minutes after I order! Cost for a casado is around $5-6.
Jardin Tropical also has other typical meals like Arroz con Mariscos or Arroz con Pollo. (Rice with seafood or rice with chicken.) As well as non-typical foods, but local favorites anyway, like burgers and pizza.
I really like this place because they don't over do it on the oil. All Tico restaurants cook with oil but a little bit goes a long way!! (And they have figured that out unlike others.)
When we get really busy doing sailing tours in high season, we call our orders in and they have them bagged up and ready when I get there. They have literally been fueling the Sea Bird crew for years! To call your order ahead; 2670-0428
The are located on the main road in Coco, down by the beach, across the street from the police station and port captain's office. You can see the beach from this soda. Eat inside or outside, you won't be disappointed in trying the yummy Tico food here!
