My family just completed a week long visit to the Villa. 9 adults and 3 children - ages ranged from 4 yo - 75 yo. The property was perfect for this family reunion / birthday celebration vacation!

We arrived at the Villa, located atop a bumpy dirt road (don't be discouraged - many roads are this way in Costa Rica), after a brieft 25 minute drive from Liberia airport (arranged through the Villa) and were greeted by the entire staff, providing us with cold towels & signature cocktails. After a tour of the facility by Dayana & Jennifer (the Concierge & Manager), our bags were taken to our rooms & we headed right to the pool, where the staff had a light lunch/snack waiting for us. This first impression of the property was not a 1 time experience - this was the level of service we received the entire vacation.

I had a hard time believing the other reviewers when they said that the staff became like family, but after spending 7 days with them, I truly feel the same way.

First - the property - a bit to far from the town to walk with kids, but a great run early in the morning. The location was NO issue at all though, as complimentary transportation was provided daily. The entire facility was wall decorated and VERY clean. The furniture and beds were all very comfortable & ample seating indoor & out. The favorite spots were the outdoor patio by the pool, down by the pool bar & the main living room, where we gathered regularly. We did not utilize the downstairs garden bedroom.

The staff - and this is where the 5star property maintains it's 5 stars. From the lovely housekeepers (Rosa & Magdalia) to the hard working chefs (Gabriel & Diego) to our excellent bartender (Christian) and the fabulous management (Dayana & Jennifer) - ALL, every single one, was fantastic. The Costa Rican people are very family oriented and you experience this as they all welcomed our children & catered to them daily. They began to know us after just a day, and knew our patterns for meal times, pool time, happy hour,etc... They kindly waited to clean rooms until after we were out on an excursion or down by the pool - it was never an inconvenience. Anything that we needed, they would get for us - from stamps on postcards to popcorn for the kids. I would go back to the Villa because of the staff that Dayana has gathered. Our entire group was overly impressed with the staff (even the staff mascot, Tica)

The food - again, 5 star all the way. Prior to your arrival you can fill out a survey regarding food preferences & allergies. Again, the staff went out of the way to accomodate the various food allergies our group had, without compromising on quality. The food was excellent - every meal felt like eating at a nice restaurant. We opted for the premium food selection and it was well worth it. OF all the meals, we seemed to enjoy the traditional Costa Rican breakfast the best! Some examples of our dinners: Steak with Peppercorn Sauce, Seared Ahi Tuna, Shrimp with Cream Sauce, Grilled Mahi Mahi, Baked chicken with Rosemary sauce. Every dinner included either a salad or soup (the carrot soup was our favorite). And for lunch: Chicken Quesadillas, Beef Fajitas, House made cheeseburgers, Chicken Wrap sandwiches, Beef nachos. Snacks: Guacamole, House baked banana bread and chocolate bread, housemade tortillas & chips, Fresh fruit

The excursions & transportation - wait to book unti you are at the Villa (unless they advise you to book prior). Dayana knows EVERYONE in town - she knows what is a tourist trap, she knows the prices you should pay, she knows how to find excursions to accomodate all or some of your group. In addition, if there is a cancellation or something goes wrong (as it did for our guys fishing trip), she can take care of getting you refunded.
One of the BEST features of booking at the Villas is that Dayana or Jennifer will go WITH you on the excursion (at no cost to you). This helps with translation, requests, etc... She can also point out cultural or historical information for you and assist you when shopping in town. And actually what we really appreciated as well was booking the transportation with her for excursions - this ensured that the vehicle STAYED where you were - so in our case - the fishing trip - the boat broke down 30 min. into the trip - the captain called the van and the villa - so the van was there, airconditioner running and could grab the guys and bring them back (this was VERY helpful - since it was in Playa Tamarindo, over an hour away). It was also very helpful in being able to leave bags, towels, change of clothes,etc... with the van.
Excursions we chose: Golf at Westin (course was pretty banged up), Deep Sea FIshing (rebooked out of Coco), ZIp Lining at Congo Trail (super fun - even our 4 and 5 yo did it!), ATV at Congo Trail (skip it - the beach was cool, but it was basically driving on a dirt road for an hour), Visting Playa Ocotal and Coco (easy, quick trips), Sunset Dolphin cruise (our FAVORITE excursion - have Dayana book this - we had a 68 foot sail boat to ourselves - included snacks, cocktails, beers & sodas - we saw dolphins, rays, tuna & swam at a hidden beach and snorkled at coral reef - excellent for the whole family).

SHould you choose the Villa - enjoy - I'm jealous - would go back again anytime!

I have traveled quite extensively through Costa Rica and have not found any accommodations to come close to the standard and uniqueness that the Villa Buena Onda. So many things to list. The views are outstanding and energizing and the vaccinity to 3 different beaches is a huge plus. What really stands out is the attention to detail from the staff and the tropical elegant ambiance. My husband was coming down with a cold and at dinner they brought him a ginger tea with lemon which really opened his sinuses up and at turn down they brought lemon, honey and cold medicine to the room at turn down. In addition the chocolate covered strawberries next to our bed a turn down was also a nice suprise. If you are looking for a wow vacation. Look no further! I highly recommend the Private hidden beaches tour beautiful sites and amazing experience.

Room Tip: Every room has a great ocean view except for the garden view room. You really can't go wrong.

My husband enjoyed several nights at this beautiful Villa recently. It was a perfect fit for us - it was unique, luxurious, relaxing... but also fun! We had incredible views, great food, the drinks were fantastic and the staff knows how to treat their guests! We weren't just numbers, we got to know the staff personally and they made sure had everything we needed. The location is prime! It's private yet your close to the town of Coco and a variety of beaches, within walking distance. I highly recommend Villa Buena Onda! You won't be disappointed!

I think this sums Hotel Villa Buena Onda quite well. It's one of the best boutique hotels I have ever stayed at, due to the friendliness of it's staff, facilities and state of the art finishing touches that the rooms have. They are gorgeous rooms and sleeping there is great.

The hotel is quite small, like all boutique hotels so you can expect an utter attention to detail from the staff whilst you stay there, which is great. You are referred to as your name, rather than being asked what your room number is. I know this may sound silly, but large hotels for obvious reasons can't remember everybody so they recur to room numbers to know who you are.

At Villa Buena Onda you are treated as a guest, with a name, with the stuff you did, questions about your family, pleasant chat that makes the stay even more personal.

The hotel is on a hill, just about 1km from Playas del Coco. Coco is pretty crowded, there is a lot of things going on, stores, bars, restaurants, etc, but ironically, all the hotels are pretty old and deteriorated, except for Villa Buena Onda. The rooms are to die for, the bathrooms are fantastic (bonus points if you love a big splash of water on your shower) and the hotel offers three meals a day which are all great (including breakfast).

The hotel is quiet, non crowded and it's place for you to relax and read a book, go to the pool or their wet bar and just have a great time in a quiet environment with a great (one of the best) ocean views of Playas del Coco.

If you are the type of guest who needs a huge pool, many restaurants to choose from, entertainment at night, a gym, and you like to be in big crowds then you won't like this place.
If you are a type of guest who loves to just lay down there and relax, have a few beers, read a book, go to the pool if it's hot, don't like crowds and want to have a quality time with your loved ones in a quiet and private place, whilst having the details and finishes of the best luxury hotels, then this hotel is for you. Don't let the size fool you. The rooms are up there in terms of comfort, details and cleanness with the best.

I celebrated the end of chemo with hubby Joe and all 12 members of our family at Villa Buena Onda over New Year's 2012/2013. Thanks to the "can-do" staff headed by Dayana, our days were perfectly orchestrated to ensure fun and relaxation for individuals ranging in age from 70 to 1 year old....not an easy task.
Every day we experienced the beauty and adventure of Costa Rica through snorkeling, zipping and learning to surf...in the evenings, we were welcomed home with Christian's yummy Margaritas and Gabriel's delicious food.
I would be remiss if I didn't give kudos to dear Magdalia. She was Baby Will's "nanny for the week." Her patience and love for him allowed Will, his Mom and Dad and all of us to relax and know he was in good hands.
If you are looking for the perfect family vacation, consider Villa Buena Onda. You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: All 7 en suite rooms in Villa Buena Onda are beautiful...rooms on the upper floor are superb.

We just returned from 7 days at VBO. From the time we walked thru the door and were greeted by Cristian with tropical drinks, to the many wonderful memories throughout the week, I felt like I was in a fantasy land. Dayana, Cristian, and Gabriel the chef were attentive to our every whim, we even had Mahi sticks that Gabriel made for us with our fresh catch. Dayana knows about everything and I would certainly rely on her expertise when I got their to schedule excursions. The men went fishing for Marlin and Rooster fish, the transportation was non-existent, but Dayana came to the rescue and got it all worked out. When we HAD to leave, we felt like we were leaving our family behind. It was our first ever family vacation with our grown children and relatives. I could not wish for a better place to stay! I wish I could go back every year!

Room Tip: There was one room without an ocean view...all other rooms were great! The showers were amazing!
