“Total disappointment”
Reviewed April 10, 2018 for a stay in April 2018

We arrived at our rental only to find the entire “lodge” where we were planning to eat and enjoy views of the ocean abandoned! The owner of the house we rented apparently didnt think it was important to tell us this begore we arrived. Playa Conchal beach itself is lovely until the packs of dirt bikers decended-roaring up and down an otherwise quiet beatiful beach fir an hour. The only way to get frim this house into playa brasilito where theres a few pretty ugly restaurants and bars is to 4 wheel across a sketchy stretch of very soft sand. Otherwise its a jalf hour drive to the town which seems pretty rough. It caters to the madmax crowd. Oh yeah and i forgot to mention that nice little pool with hammock you see in the picture? It was covered with bees and the hammock had rotted away. Dont waste your money on this house its a pit.

“Really good for us!”
Reviewed October 9, 2017 for a stay in January 2017

Very happy with our roughly 3-week stay. We are returning in 2018. Kim and Tim are very comfortable to engage with- really pleasant, helpful and respectful of privacy. For us, great location and facilities- good value for money. As I said, we’re going back!

“Quiet with ocean view.”
Reviewed March 13, 2017 for a stay in March 2017

A/C in bedroom is great. 15 minute walk to Playa Conchal, rated one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. Tim & Kim very nice owners. After brief pool disaster, it was filled yesterday and absolutely wonderful this afternoon. Have met some really nice folks in the area. Local restaurants in nearby towns are very good. Sunset from Playa Tamarindo is breath taking. Only drawback is lack of cross ventilation and the afternoon temperature has been in the mid 90s. I highly recommend this place.

“Wonderful place to relax”

A great little place to just sit and relax. Large bedroom, small bathroom and good size kitchen/living area, with the bonus of a sofabed to relax on in the evenings. Suited best for a couple.
Large terrace overlooking garden, forest and to the sea beyond. We spent many happy hours there just taking in the atmosphere. Chirpy birds and noisy jays, visiting coati (ate pineapple, tortillas, rambutan and sausage; turned up his nose at cucumber and tomato) and a stream of ants transporting yellow flower petals across the verandah - a never ending task! It was like something from Jurassic Park when the jays arrived and demanded food (tortillas were acceptable)! First one would perch on the railing and then you'd look up and there would be four more silently waiting and watching in the trees! A dog came visiting several times. She was very polite and just hung out with us.
It's a little cottage next to owners' home. Swimming pool (shared with owner) was perfect to dip into when it got too hot in the afternoon. We liked hanging out looking over the edge at the wildlife (birds, mostly). Owners were around if we had wanted anything but were not obtrusive; but we were happy just to be on our own.
Kitchen was perfectly adequate. We were used to the size of fridge (European) so were able to fit loads in it. Could do with a bowl (for salad) and a lemon squeezer (but we do like to cook as much as possible using local ingredients). The final 50 m to the casita is rough but is perfectly driveable.
There is a book, which tells you everything (and I mean everything) about what's around to do and where to eat, how to find places, etc. It even included the tide times, which we used to go and visit local beaches (which really are empty and gorgeous). At Playa Mina we heard whales underwater as we snorkelled. They must have been miles away!)
If you are looking for 5 star luxury, go and pay thousands at the Westin on the beach! But, if you want to be in the middle of nature, then book this place.

House is just as advertised. Tim and Kim are excellent hosts. They are there if you have any questions, otherwise you have your privacy. Location was great for our needs. A 15-minute walk or 5-min drive, gained you access to a nearly private beach. We also explored six other beaches within one hour driving time. In Tamarindo (30-minute drive) you can book any activity you wish from surfing to a trip to a rain forest. Food and other conveniences are readily available at nearby stores (supers) and restaurants (sodas).

“Peace in Paradise”

Casa Roja is a simple, compact and laid back retreat near 3 fabulous beaches. It is sort of remote except for Hotel Condor which has a bar and restaurant only 100 yards away. The hosts Kim and Tim are helpful, friendly and mostly hidden away somewhere.
The accommodations are basic, clean and comfortable. The pool is adjacent to the cabina and very nice for swimming and exercise. Then as a bonus, there is Doug, the wild (well semi-wild) coati who shows up regularly for his bread and fruit and to pose for pics with the guests.
We were there for Valentine’s Day week 2016. Highly recommended for comfort, peace and value.

“Like a home away from home”

Our stay in the casita was as restful and refreshing as anything we've experienced. Tim and Kim were terrific hosts who greeted us as we arrived and gave us the tour. Throughout our 9-day stay they were always available, but didn't hover. We found them to be a wealth of information, both on the local area and the ups and downs of expat living.

The casita was ideal for the two of us. Sharing it with a couple of kids would have been entirely workable. Sharing it with another adult couple probably would have been uncomfortable. Kim did a sensational job putting together a coffee table book with all the local beaches and specific driving instructions. Rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle when you come. Most beach roads are unpaved and a sense of adventure is a handy item to pack.

I can't begin to recall all the different species of birds we saw just sitting on the patio. A friendly coati named Doug ate us out of house and home the first day, so we always stocked up on extra papaya and cantaloupe afterward. A restaurant with a sensational view is less than a 5-minute walk away when you want to eat someone else's cooking, or you can cook up a storm in the kitchenette.

We enthusiastically give two thumbs up to this lovely corner of heaven and the great people who live there. Pura vida!
