Early March, 2014

My family and I visited for a week, and I must say, this was far and away our best resort experience to date. I had to think really hard to find any flaws in the service or facilities. I should qualify this review by mentioning that I had banked enough Starwood points to finance most of this stay with points and was still a Starwood Platinum member while enjoying this experience. But I really think that the majority of my good experience had less to do with my status and more with plain old excellent hospitality.

The check-in process was smooth. Our "junior family suite" was a bit on the small side but was ultimately plenty comfortable for us to manage. The room was top-notch clean and kept that way throughout our stay, despite trying our hardest to dirty it up :o)

The pool was fantastic - our kids loved it - great service in the family area, plenty to do both inside and outside the pool, and a friendly, well-managed towel process.

The beach is public, but very close to the property. Once you get over the road it feels like a private beach. The resort staff will bring over chairs and umbrellas, and you can bring over resort towels as well. You can also borrow non-motorized gear from the resort as well (boogie boards, snorkeling gear, etc). Nice beach as well, though the Pacific was a bit rough when we were there - particularly for our little kids.

We had to temper our "Costa Rica Adventures" to stuff that fit the tolerances of our small kids. We commissioned a boat to do some snorkeling and fishing, and did an ATV ride with Erik Garcia's crew. Both went over very well. A walk into Brasilito is worthwhile as well.

Resort restaurants were great. We were able to get early dinner reservations each night. We had a couple small service "blips" while dining but generally the food and service were very good. The buffet was always a perfectly acceptable fall-back for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Special thanks to Kendrey at the pool, Rodrigo for looking after us the whole time, and Andrea and Tanya for helping out prior to our arrival. You guys were all great and should be proud of the jobs you do. Wonderful!

The family experience in particular was very good. This resort did everything possible to enhance the experience for all four of us - not just my wife and I and not just our kids. Fantastic experience!

Room Tip: We stayed in a building between the pool and the Westin Kids Club. Staying near to the pool is key...

We had booked a Junior Suite with SPG points and were upgraded to a Beach Club room on the first floor of Tower 2. That had its pluses and minuses. The Beach Club room is your basic hotel room with a nice veranda. The Junior Suite, according to the photos, would have had a separate living area with a sofa and table. The Beach Club room, however, allowed us to use the adults-only pool, separate breakfast and lunch buffets and the Beach Club Lounge. The Beach Club lounge is an under-reported and under-utilized gem with a separate concierge, travel desk and kitchen/bar. They serve adult coffee (Irish, Spanish, French) with a small sweet at 3:00 and appetizers at 6:00. We could have made dinners out of the appetizers if we hadn't already made dinner reservations in advance at all of the different restaurants.

The adults-only pool was a plus, as the “drink all day and yell loudly” crowd was mostly at the other pool. Towels are available without a check-out procedure and there is a "take one/leave one" library at the towel desk. Cabanas are available for $ 20 per day (reserve early).

When, not if, we go again, we will try to book a Beach Club Junior Suite, which sounds like the best of both worlds: a separate sitting area and access to the Beach Club amenities.

We booked a dive trip, zip line trip and river trip through Evelyn at Swiss Travel and had three wonderful experiences. We passed on the trips that required two or more hours of bus travel. When we return we plan to ask Evelyn to book us at a resort closer to the volcano for a few days before we arrive at the Westin.

Pros: Beautiful resort. Outstanding staff, very friendly and helpful. Lots of vegetation and wildlife. Good beach. Kayaks, bicycles and beach lounge chairs are included. This was our first all-inclusive resort and we really got to like the idea of not needing money. We were pampered all the way. Loved the last night champagne and strawberries and the towel origami.

Cons: It's far from anything else. Day trips that don't involve the ocean require long bus or car rides. The local town, Brasilito, did not look inviting. The beach is good for playing in the waves, but not for snorkeling.

Notes: Pre-reservations are necessary at the restaurants, but the buffet is quite good and does not require reservations. The food is good, not great. The wine is adequate, but then we are from wine country and are snobs. At one dinner the white wine was served at room temperature and the red wine was chilled. The best drinks were at the Beach Club lounge.

We booked $ 20 beach-side massages from Lisa and Anna every day and skipped the pricey spa massages.

We did a dive refresher with Mauricio at the pool and then went on two dives with him. He is a wonderful dive master!

Regular tips are included, but we noticed that everyone around us was tipping for exceptional service, and much of the service is exceptional. We chose to tip our favorite people (David and Rene at the Club lounge, Evelyn at Swiss Travel and a few others) at the end of our visit.

Everyone takes dollars. We brought Costa Rican currency, but it was unnecessary.

Room Tip: The Beach Club rooms are adults only and come with a lot of great perks. If you just want to lounge...

We just stayed at the Westin Playa Conchal and had a great experience there. The staff was very friendly and room was very clean. Very quite with cool animals walking around the private pool. Great pool drinks non-stop. Had a 3 third floor suite in tower two. Very nice with balcony and hot tub. The food was very good considering an all inclusive resort. Mostly Americans and Canadians at the resort. Which was kind of nice for a change. No riff raff from Europe, Russia or Asia. What a great place!! Highly recommended!!

The service at this hotel was unreal..beginning with the concierge Andrea, which made sure our stay included everything we needed. My husband needed distiller water for his Cpap machine and they delivered that to our room without any hassles. We were upgraded to the private Beach Club area where we had access to premium liqueur. Our butler Nelson was extremely accommodating. The food was superb, just be sure to make reservations- Tanya was great at making arrangements for our entire stay. Andres at the beach club pool was amazing! Sady and Alejandro at the Italian restaurant were super friendly and professional. Swiss Travel was the way to go for us- we took an atv tour and zip lined at the Congo trail. The grounds are perfectly manicured. Loved it all!!!!

My husband and I just returned from a one week stay at the Westin. We were there in Feb 2014, during their 6-month dry season so the weather was a perfect 35C and sunny every single day. It was exactly what we needed to escape the cold weather in Canada.
I would highly recommend that you book your reservations for the a la carte restaurants because it's true what other reviewers are saying, space books up quickly. The hotel seemed to be at full capacity when we were (there was a work conference happening as well) but the hotel is so large that we didn't seem packed in like sardines. There was still plenty of space to move around.
The grounds of the hotel are kept very tidy and the rooms were very clean. The service at all the restaurants, bars and just everywhere on the resort was excellent. Everyone was genuinely friendly and they all work very hard to make the guests happy.
The beach was very nice and the water very warm at this time of the year. THere was one incident where a little girl got stung by a jellyfish but I think that type of occurance might be rare. As soon as it happened, the hotel staff and others sitting on the beach ran to her aid so there were plenty of people around to help out, which I thought was nice.
We didn't book any excursions through Erick on the beach but he is there everyday right when you step onto the beach. So he is easy to find. We did our excursions through Air Canada Vacations which was probably more expensive than going with Erick on the beach but we had booked them in advance just for piece of mind since they were excursions we really wanted to go on and didn't want to take any chances with them saying they couldn't accomodate it.
I also want to mention that this hotel is a bit far from some main attractions. We wanted to visit the Arenal Volcano and it was a 4-5 hour drive - one way! Needless to say, it was a full day excursion (we left at 7am and came back at 11pm). So keep that in mind if seeing the Arenal is on your list of things to do but you don't like long car rides.
All in all, it was a great hotel, great food (even the house wine was good but I'm not a big wine drinker so don't take my word on it alone), excellent service and the perfect vacation.

We spent 10 days at The Westin Golf Resort and Spa at Playa Conchal. During this stay we played golf 4 times on a very fine Robert Trent Jones golf course. Enjoyed the many fine restaurants on the property and never had a meal that wasn't excellent. I found the staff to be friendly and most could speak English as if it were there native tongue. My wife enjoyed four different spa sessions and spoke of each being equally enjoyable. I would recommend this facility for its beautiful grounds and buildings as well as its excellent golf course and the opportunity to take many excursions straight from the resort .
