My husband and I spent a week at the Westin Playa Conchal resort. This was our first time in Costa Rica but it won't be our last. Our vacation was very relaxing and the hotel was just like we pictured it to be. We met nice people from all over. The weather was great during our visit, barely any rain (and when it did rain, we were typically getting ready for dinner or eating dinner). The pool and ocean were great the only drawback was the beach is not associated with the hotel all beaches are public therefore no bar and meal service on the beach. Lots of beach vendors. We dealt with Eric Garcia. He was a good broker and set up a much better deal that the vendors associated with the resort. You are able to barter with him a bit, where the hotel vendors have a fixed (over) price.

We stayed in the Royal Beach Suites, and we're glad we did David and Nelson took care of our every need down to the bottle of champagne. We didn't have any issues with making reservations to the restaurants (David took care of that for us). We ate at all of the restaurants, except the buffet (we are fans of buffets).

Overall, we had a great time! Would recommend to others.

The all inclusive Westin resort in guanacaste costa rica met all of my expectations plus more. This resort was filled with wonderful people, different activities everyday, delicious options for food and beauty that left me in awe. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left... We felt like royalty.
As soon as we arrived to the resort we were greeted to a beautiful and clean lobby, attentive hotel staff and refreshing mojitos. The Westin "car" picked us up and took us to the royal beach club where friendly staff explained the layout of the resort, the daily activities and made sure our luggage reached our room while we went to grab some lunch.
After lunch we were greeted by David Rodriguez (personal concierge attendant at K1 from May 10th til May 14th) who became one of our favorite things about the resort itself. David was always present in front of our tower (k1), he was extremely pleasant and was always ready to serve. He always had a smile on his face and made sure all of our needs were taken care of, even the silliest of requests. The resort houses a few different animals such a iguanas, raccoons, bats, geckos and coati...they roam around the property which left us in fear especially when we had to walk around at night. David helped us manage our fear, he would always call for a car when we needed it, made personal requests to people to shoo the animals away from us and really just lightened the mood if we freaked out when we saw one of them nearby. David is a hard worker and he was my favorite staff member at the resort... I loved the resort more thanks to his hospitality.
Since we were staying at the royal beach club we had access to the privet pool which we appreciated much more than the public pool. At the bar we met our other friend Jorge, who also was very hard working and made our trip more enjoyable by serving us yummy drinks. On the last day we shouted out different drink colors and he would go to his bar and always come back with exactly what we requested. He also ordered us lunch from spirula (pizza place) and delivered it to our beach chairs. Thanks to him that afternoon after we drank and ate we knocked out for a great nap on the beach chairs.
David Martinez (pool attendant) also deserves a special mention... He was really sweet and paid special attention to our animal fears. Through the various classes that we took over the course of our stay we met Kenny, Steven and Ronald. All three were great teachers and really presented their material in a really interesting way. They took the time out to answer all of our questions and enlightened us in regards to costa rican culture, the wines of the region and the various costa rican coffees. Ana who works at the coffee shop made us some really delicious drinks during our coffee lovers class.
My favorite meal was at mediterra where I had a mushroom pasta dish but actually the whole resort was filled with fabulous foods and all of the chefs were very accommodating to our vegetarian diet. I would reccomend las candalas, mediterra and Spirula for dinner and lunch and definitely go to mitra for their breakfast buffet.
The resort also provided special treats for the guests staying at the royal towers, everyday from 3-5 we had coffee and cake available and at 6 they provided snacks.
Another great feature the Westin provided for were the shows at night... We saw the Pura vida show one night and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The staff were always working very hard... The pools were always being cleaned, the rooms were spotless, the landscape was so well maintained, the restaurants always had enough staff members and the cars were roaming around the resort at all times for guests.
This was my first trip to costa rica but thanks to the Westin and all the wonderful people who took care of us it most certainly won't be my last trip... Im dead set on going back to this resort in a few years time! I reccomend this resort to everyone and anyone, you won't be disappointed.

We stayed at the Westin Playa Conchal March 20-27, prior to our arrival, we upgraded to the Royal Service area. We thought it was a very nice resort, but would not say “5 Star”. We’ve stayed at other resorts in other countries that were far superior to the Westin. Other resorts have much more to offer and they are a bit more accommodating to traveler’s needs. With the new Dreams resort opening shortly in Costa Rica, the Westin will have to focus a bit more attention to what is lacking.

With that being said there were many positive features to this hotel. The rooms at the Westin were spotless, room service never missed a single day or evening. We never lacked towels or toiletries. The sheets were changed each day and the mini bar was stocked without asking.

The people were very kind and we didn’t have any problems communicating. Most know English very well and if they didn’t they found someone who did.

The food was absolutely fabulous, I would say the best we’ve ever had anywhere. Service was incredible in the restaurants. We never had a problem with a reservation and were able to have dinner in every restaurant at the hotel. We never had to wait to be seated and once we were seated they had a team of waiters and waitresses that really knew what they were doing. We were really impressed.

We never had to fight for a lounge chair at the beach; however, they didn’t have towels until around 10-10:30 am each day. The pool bar did not open until 10:30 so we couldn’t get tea or soda and we like to be in the sun early. They did distribute water around 9:30 each day which was nice. The wait staff at the Royal pool was a hit and miss. Some waiters were incredible, some not so great.

The grounds in the Royal area were better kept than the grounds on the rest of the resort. There is some deferred maintenance that needs attention and they need to clean up outside a bit more than they do. (Power wash the walkways, rake up leaves, etc.) The pool also needed some concrete work. The tile roofs are in need of repair – all of this just makes the hotel look a little run down and older than it really is.

We took the Palo Verde River Tour which was great. It took about an hour + to get there and we were able to see howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, crocodiles, a variety of birds. We were disappointed that we weren’t able to see some of the wildlife we’d expected to see like parrots and toucans, but our tour guide said they migrate far inland. It was a 2 hour tour up and down the river which can probably be shortened to 1hr. After the 50th huge crocodile, it gets a little boring.

They recently built a brand new airport which is only a few months old, perhaps the departure tax they charge is paying for that?? Food at the airport is disgusting and outrageously priced so eat before you get there, or wait for food on the plane which is an upgrade to their airport food! We rented a car at the airport when we arrived, it was a full size SUV $640 for the week, unlimited mileage. Since the taxi to the hotel and back is $160, we didn’t think this was too bad, plus it gave us the opportunity to see the island.

Also, when we checked in they took an imprint of our charge card which we thought was a bit odd since it was an all-inclusive resort. When we checked out they told us there was nothing due but when we asked for a receipt stating zero they would not give us one. When we got home there was a $60 charge on our credit card. We contacted the hotel and they apologized for their error and promised to credit our account which did not happen. After 3 more emails to the manager, we finally received a credit 21 days later. This is one of the thing a guest never wants to deal with after a vacation.

Overall, it was lovely, but there were a few glitches they need to work on. With the Dreams Resort opening shortly in Costa Rica, perhaps that will put some pressure on the Westin to step things up a bit.

This review is a little late but, better late than never. I traveled with my now husband to this resort when it was still owned by Paradisus. We were upgraded to the Royal Service section and that is def the way to go. The view of the mountains from the pool is beautiful. The resort was in the off-season (Sept) because it rained a lot but, I would never go any other time. The whole country was so green and beautiful. We rented a cabana at the pool everyday so when it would rain we could hop out of the pool and relax on the cabana bed.

We also went on the ATV tour up into the mountains to zip line and that was awesome. The people on the beach right outside the gates are the best ones to go with. They give good prices and make sure you have a great time.

My fav thing to eat there was the mushroom risotta at the Italian restaurant. I still crave it.

I know I will be back to the property again someday!

The Westin Playa Conchal is a beautiful place, very peaceful and relaxing. The service was wonderful. Everything was so clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The grounds were very beautiful. The different specialty restaurants were good. The pool was huge. Only a few steps to the beach which was not crowded and although there were a few vendors out there they did not bother us ever. A massage on the beach is wonderful. The property is big, but the shuttle service was timely and excellent. Drinks were good. We had a junior suite that was very nice with a comfortable bed. Taxi service or excursion trips are easy to arrange.

Room Tip: Be near the pool, beach, and most of the restaurants. Building 38 is a great location.

Great experience, the resort was exactly what I expected. The highlight of our trip, was the excursions . If your are looking to have a awesome time, look for the guys on the beach with blue shirts that say Conchal Adventuras . These guys were awesome ( Erik Garcia ) - ( John Rodriguez ) - ( Aaron ) and to top it off, all the staff was fluent with English . So whatever you do, be sure to look for the guys with the blue shirts if u wanna have a great time .
