“Fantastic...”

I am unsure where these bad reviewers went but the Westin Playa Conchal that my wife and I went to was INCREDIBLE!!! The property is going through renovation in certain spots but it was one o the quietest renovation that I NEVER heard.... We did go at the end of the rainy season and boy did it rain but we still had a blast. The room was great clean and modern. Our concierges Dave and Tri were great. They were there when ever we needed any thing... John the pool/bar concierge was very helpful and Ronald was not only a great teacher of wine (wine tasting class) but also a true master at the bar. The food was great along with the service and the grounds even with the renovations and rain looked great. We went to ATV/ZIP lining and jet skiing which was awsome especially in the rain. If you get the chance depending on the time of year go see the sea turtles laying eggs on the beach. It is a once in a life time experience. No matter who you book your excursions with they are all negotiable. We booked with the Eric on the beach for the atv/zip line and the jet skies he was the cheapest but we booked the turtles with the resort. Even if you don't want to leave the resort there are many things to do. We did wine tasting, tequila tasting and coffee tasting classes. At night the resort has a live vegas style show which is good. It is not as big as a vegas show but entertaining just the same. There is nothing I can think of to say bad about the resort. The only words of wisdom i would say is bring Off with you the mosquito are aplenty. The only bad experience we had was not with the Resort but with Hertz rental car at the airport. It should not take 45 min to rent a car. We were so happy with the resort we are planning our next trip....

Room Tip: Bring mosquito spray (Off)

As always when reading reviews on sites like these you will often get a large disparity between the reviews found here, my review is on the extreme positive aspect of that scale. Property and Rooms:
Check in was quick and courteous. We did have to wait about an hour before our room was ready for us, but the day we arrived was the day they were opening one of the royal service buildings after doing their renovations. Our room was beautiful, we stayed in a suite with a bedroom, partitioned living room, jacuzzi both in the bathroom and on the deck. The beds were so comfortable, TV had cable, an ihome for ipods, two bathrooms with granite and oversized shower heads. Everything was clean and plentiful, and given the weather while we were there, we did spend a lot of time enjoying this amenity. The property itself is under a lot of construction, which did not hinder our experience in the slightest, although upon completion will only further enhance anyones experience here. The crew worked hard, if not excessively, maintaining the property as they are always out tending to every minor detail.
Food:
Given the fact that this is an all-inclusive hotel the food really is far above average. Also because of the low season they did not operate with every restaurant being open every night, but we did not find this to be an inconvenience at all, especially with the included room service. We found the Italian restaurant to be the best, the Asian to be on the other end (do not want to use the word worst) and everything else was just good. We ate breakfast and lunch in the restaurant in front of the royal service pool. Honestly I am unsure if there were other options for these meals, in terms of a buffet, but both meals were of endless options and always very delicious. We did have lunch at the snack stand near the main pool, which offered a delicious grilled tuna pita sandwich.
Service:
I left this for last, as it was really the make or breaking point of any vacation experience. With an overwhelming majority of the staff being the friendliest, nicest and most hospitable people I have met. We did not run into a staff member that did not speak perfect English, although I hate to even have to say this because after all we are in a country where Spanish is the spoken language there. Everyone remembered and called us by our first names, constantly asking if there was anything they can get for us. John Ruiz at the royal service made the experience extraordinary, he is such a hard worker, offering us everything even while working through the rain. He alone, had such a positive impact on our trip. The remainder of the staff, David the Royal Service butlers, Kenny at the Gym, and a few other names I cannot remember or were referred to as something other than their name were just outstanding. There is nothing more we could have wanted or needed, without being fulfilled by asking.

Tips:
Do not pay for a massage at the spa, as going onto the beach you can get a full hour long massage for $30, and very professional.
The tour company on the resort offers some packages, but you CAN negotiate with them to get a better price.
Although the room service breakfast was good, the buffet was much better.
Although the resort property is large, the areas in which you need to go on a daily basis is deceiving. It was more like a 8-10 minute walk from our room (one side of the resort) to the restaurants and beach (on the other side of the resort).
The gym equipment was very new, although not a large variety. Kenny in the gym will give you your own little workout if he isn't too busy...my abs hurt for days.
We used Costa Rica for Everyone tour company, which was a fantastic experience, and you can read more of my review on their TripAdvisor page.
We rented a car, hated the company Europcar, but it is a great thing to have. The areas surrounding the resort are extremely safe (watch out for random animals cross the street at extremely slow paces though, we nearly hit a horse one night!). If you have a car you can easily take advantage of the shops, and bars that are outside of the resort. If you need things there is a supermarket about 10 minutes off the resort, as to avoid paying $12 for a can of Off Bug Spray. Also keep in mind that gas there is very expensive, and you DO NOT need a GPS, as there are so few roads there, so not many opportunities to get lost.

All in all our experience with this resort was incredible. Trust mem, I tried to keep as unbiased as I could. Although maybe you should take the negative reviews into consideration (although I firmly disagree with them) but also keep in mind that apparently some people have different opinions, and that their overall opinion may often be based on a single event. There were some people I came into contact with on our trip that just didn't seem happy in general, regardless of anything else.
Please contact me with any questions you may have about my experience in Costa Rica (both on the resort and off). I loved it so much I am already planning my next visit to the country in May.

My phone and money was stolen out of my purse when left in my room. We went to have breakfast and left the room for a mere 40min and my phone and cash was stolen from my purse. When this was reported, the staff attempts to protect one another and I was made to believe that they were misplaced. There was no attempt to resolve my stolen property because the staff told me that "I had lost it." Took it up to the corporate level to complain but of course nothing was done about it.

We went here for our honeymoon and just returned last week. We have been to several other all inclusive resorts and would not describe ourselves as picky people. We like to have fun and just expect to get what we pay for.. Since we paid almost double what we have in the past for all inclusive resorts (thinking it was our honeymoon, why not..) we expected it to be great, especially as it now carries the Westin name and they are known for their top-grade hotels... We were disappointed.

The food here is excellent but they are very limited as far as what is open every day.. There are supposed to be 5 or 6 restaurants plus a buffet.. however there were only 1 or 2 restaurants open nightly and the buffet is only open for breakfast and lunch. You need reservations to get in at the restaurants and even if you call early, they only have 2 time slots available, 6:30 or 8:30. They were also limited on what bars were open at specific times.. there were generally only 1 or 2 open all day and then 1 at nighttime.

There is also a TON of renovations going on right now. Our travel agent did let us know there would be some renovations.. but we were told it was the main lobby and one of the restaurants, it was literally every-other building. Most of our pics taken on the resort have the green felt stuff hanging in background that is supposed to "blend" so you do not notice the construction..

The staff does try to accomodate as much as possible, but they can only do so much.. we kept hearing that westin was very strict with their staff and following their rules..

There were only 140 guests there when we were there, which was nice because we had the whole resort to ourselves, but when every thing was closed and they did not offer any type of discount to make up for it, we thought they may offer an upgrade instead. No such luck. Westin apparently does not do upgrades and does not care that their guests pay full price expecting to have access to all the bars, restaurants and other activities. We had to use towel cards to get a towel at the pool, if the card was misplaced, there was a charge. There is no pool-side service, however they do come around to pick up empties.. One day we asked the gentleman that was clearing the tables if we could order a drink from him but he just said "no english" and pointed at the nearest bar across the pool..

The golf course was nice, but again, for the price, not very inclusive. It was $165 to do 18 holes and rent clubs.. and beer was $5 each on the course.

Overall, the resort is pretty and has the potential to be wonderful. I do not know if it is because it is Westin's first attempt at all-inclusive or because of the recent change-over, but things right now are not worth the price you pay here. We would not recommend this hotel to our friends or family.

This place is unbelievable, the food is to die for. We upgraded to the Royal Beach Club and had a concierge and 24 hour in room service which we used for breakfast and snacks during our stay. Julio at the Royal Beach Club bar is the nicest guy you will ever meet and he will make your stay so much more enjoyable by remembering your drink preference and he keeps the drinks coming. I recommend the dirty monkey and the miami vice- both really delicious. The formal dining restaurants were really delicious, my favorite was the Meditera and the Asian, the sushi was so fresh and the specialty rolls were very unique. As previous reviewers wrote there is construction at this resort but they to the best they can to hide it and not let it bother the guests. Some of the areas were closed while we stayed there but they moved stuff around and unless you knew of the actual place where the restaurant was supposed to be you wouldn't even know they were moved. Overall this is a wonderful place to stay and i would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fun/relaxing vacation

Room Tip: I would upgrade to the Royal Beach Club- it's a bit pricey but you get more amenities and a priv...

This resort is not worth the money. The food is some of the worst I've ever had, half the restaurants are closed and the ones that are open are awful. Also if you come here, learn Spanish because even though they claim to understand English they dont ..every room service order I have placed has been wrong. The place is beautiful, but if I come to costa rica again, I'll stay in neighboring tamarindo.

Just returned from a long weekend at the Westin. We were highly disappointed in what has become of this hotel since the change to Westin. We spent our honeymoon here 5 years ago during the exact same time and thought so highly of the resort that we recommended the hotel to numerous friends. The hotel has fallen down significantly since the changeover. The staff seemed out of whack. The little items they previously had and were an unexpected treat like a full minibar, in-room dining menu, pool side menu, pre-dinner snack and Royal Service all have been reduced or have gone away completely. This is a shame considering the impact these small items had on the perception of the resort. The in-room dining menu needs a lot of work. Additionally, the royal service pool was not very clean. There were numerous worms and other debris in the pool. The allocation of only one towel at the pool seemed a little short-sided not to mention the towel cards (both of which were not in place on our previous visit) and not up to par for royal service and the amount of money we spent. Furthermore, we were completely surprised by the amount of construction taking place. Our travel agent mentioned that there was some construction but about 75% of the resort was under construction with no adjustment on price. If you look on the website, there is no apparent mention of this. This is not a very customer centric approach to say the least. Lastly, we had some issues with our transportation to the airport based on some false information passed to us by the hotel. When we asked for a solution from the hotel and the manager of site, we basically had to figure it ourselves and pay out of our pocket. Once again, short sided customer service that a little sorry and a payment for the shuttle service would have easily solved. This hotel has fallen off our future travel plans as well as our recommendation to our friends. This was an excellent hotel that seems to have been homogenized in the sake of profit.

Room Tip: Be careful of what is going on. There are other hotels in this price range in Costa Rica that are ce...
