My family went on a vacation to Guanacaste, Costa Rica for 7 days in October. The second to last day of our vacation we went on a tour with Costa Rica Unique to visit Nicaragua (1 day tour). I was a little skeptical at first because it was another country and it was expensive; we had a family of 6 (including my husband and I, 2 grandmothers, and 2 little children.)
Well to my surprise this was the best part of our trip, and we did a lot of amazing stuff. Jose, our tour guide, took us to see an active volcano, on a private boat tour, visited Granada the historic downtown, see a beautiful lake from a crater, visit, a cigar manufactory, eat lunch in the best restaurant, shop in the local markets and more. I could go on but I don't want to spoil all the fun. In the end, Jose even surprised us with all gifts from Nicaragua! We got home around 9PM and all were completely exhausted.
In terms of transportation, they will drive you to the boarder and you will cross the boarder by foot and then get back into another car on the Nicaragua side. The boarder is like 30 feet long. It was fun getting our passports stamped and seeing the difference as you go between 2 countries. We left a healthy tip because we were so happy on our excursions.
Bring Cameras, panchos, snacks for the adults and kids, change/money, tennis shoes, toilet paper for public bathrooms, hand sanitizers, reading material for the ride (Nicaragua is 3 hours from Guanacaste, Costa Rica).
