Ecoplaya Beach Resort
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in La Cruz
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Jan. 31,2014.
Finishing one week here and it has been pleasantly relaxing. We were aware of the extremely remote location of this resort. Positives, The staff were terrific. Kimberly is an extremely professional asset to this resort. The Ecoplaya is undergoing some management and renovations. We stayed in the hotel ( no kitchen) section of the resort and ate all meals at the resort. The meals were good for our tastes. The winds are strong for the kite surfers and keeps most flying insects away. The room was cleaned twice and the towels and garbage done daily.
Negatives. The road coming into the resort is the worst I have ever observed anywhere anytime. They are apparently kept that way to keep the speed down for construction workers 10 minutes down the road. Watch out for the bus traffic at the end of the day the will not slow down. You need four wheel drive simply to have a higher vehicle to keep above the potholes ruts and bumps. Suggestion, bring some bug spray to spray at the doors. A towel works well too to keep the spiders, geckos, snakes, insects from entering your room. We always did a bug inspection as soon as we entered. The snake did not get in our room but did require a staff member to remove it from a sceaming guests room. Welcome to Costa Rica. The beach is OK if you just want to walk it but pick your times especially at high tide there is no beach left. The beach is one of the best in the world for kite sailing. We observed some flying 20 meters in the air and very fast. Don't go too far west as you will be illegally entering Nicaragua. All in all we planned to bring some books to read, not do too much and just relax this is the perfect resort to do that.

Ecoplaya is in a remote corner of Costa Rica along the southern side of Bahia Salinas. You should rent a car otherwise you'll be limited to tours the resort offers, which while not bad may not be what you want to do. The road there is very rough, though after spending two weeks in different parts of the country, there are worse roads! If you want something that is between roughing it and a luxury resort, this would be a good choice. The rooms were big and clean, though the nightly invasion of millipedes required sweeping out every morning. Deep woods Off seemed to help when sprayed in the door threshold area. There is a nice restaurant at the end of the hotel driveway which has odd hours - but is a great place for lunch. There is a monster sized resort going in down the road at El Jobo Playa, and I'd imagine that when they get that completed they will pave the road to from La Cruz past Ecoplaya to get people there. We were told we wouldn't see monkeys near the resort, but we saw both Capuchin and Howler monkeys within days of arriving. Make sure you arrive during the daylight hours and have a GPS. Finding the place at night for the first time was a nightmare for some guests - I felt sorry for them as they had to hire a taxi to guide them. Pick up your groceries in La Cruz - there is a small convenience store closer in El Jobo village, but they don't have much of a selection of anything. Live stock is free range in Costa Rica, despite the appearance of fences, so watch out for cows, pigs, chickens and the many dogs running around! We had a great time, traveling throughout the area and getting an idea of local Costa Rican life. There is Wi-fi at the resort, but it is limited to the pool area and the front desk area. Bottom line, if you don't have high expectations of the resort, you'll enjoy your stay. It's all in your frame of mind!

Room Tip: I would try a second floor room, because our first floor room was invaded nightly by millipedes.

We really enjoy the time we spent at Ecoplaya. We were looking for true peace and quiet “ alone and nature “ time and we found the right spot. The hotel is undergoing some awesome improvements and maintenance work. The rooms are huge, the beach is right in front of the hotel, the food is awesome ( fresh fish and even a seafood BBQ one night ). Then staff were also great, super friendly and helpful. The entire bay in front of the hotel is secluded, pristine, wild.. One can spot Nicaragua on the other side of the water !!!!

Ecoplaya beach resort, near La Cruz, at the north of Costa Rica, is interestingly localized for it is close enough to a number of national parks - but you must rent a car. Roads in Costa Rica are not good, and accesses to this hotel in particular is quite bad.
The hotel room is OK - quite big, actually, and confort is satisfactory - but definitely not a luxury hotel, far from it. Service is not very good - towels were lacking and only after some perseverance were we able to get some more, for instance. But the people are nice.
The restaurant has a limited menu, but the food is quite good - and at dinner you may be joined by a raccoon or two; during the day, you can see iguanas at the hotel and maybe even watch the local cows take a drink from the hotel's swimming pool - so, there are some points or interest.
At a very short walking distance from the hotel there's a beach, but not one of the best in the vicinity.
La Cruz is not far from the hotel and is a good sized village, although not a tourist oriented one - shopping is typical Costa Rica stores.

The hotel is located close to anything and far from everything. It is the perfect getaway if you really want to relax.
The place is currently been remodel from years of poor or zero maintenance so it looks like it is going to be in great condition once finished. Food was more into the homestyle side but it was great. The lobster was superb and the pinas coladas.are the best in the area. Surroundings like playa rajada are really nice with awesone sunsets. Great snorkeling at isla bolaños.Overall, if you are looking to get away from everything and do not mind a bit of dust, this place is the one.

Where to begin? Well, first thing I could tell you is... AVOID THIS HOTEL!! We stayed for a night in a junior suite, they gave us a 50% discount ($160 full price) because the room was not fully clean yet (we're talking 5 pm!). The room itself wasn't so terrible but the customer service, the prices, the beach, the feeling of being in a "hostel" movie made the whole experience my worst, ever!! For a typical meal (nothing fancy: rice and beans, a small piece of beef and cabbage salad) you end up paying over $13!! And it doesn't include the natural beverage, this one costs a little bit more than $4.
Now, we ran out of water three different times while our stay (only one night). No one told us they were going to "cut" the water supply (supposedly to fix some leakage). We had to brush our teeth using bottled water! The bathroom didn't have any soap, the TV (the oldest you've probably seen) was kinda broken (channels were hard to tune in), the furniture was perhaps as old as the TV... The schedule and menu offered in the restaurant were very disappointing. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, literally. Overall, you had the feeling you were staying in a ghost hotel even though it had no vacancy (apparently, it is full because of the contractors, engineers and other workers who are currently building a fancy hotel nearby (owned by the richest Nicaraguan family) and some exchange students who have some sort of program in this Godforsaken town.
My little advice to y'all: DO NOT SPEND YOUR PRECIOUS TIME AND MONEY HERE!!!

I stayed here with GLA, a teen mission trip group. We loved it and had an amazing time. It's a beautiful hotel on the beach. Only issue I had was that a few rooms had wasps, not infestations, but they flew in from outside. It didn't really affect my overall opinion, and I left Costa Rica having faced my fear of bees. I would recommend this hotel to big groups of people, especially those planning on doing any type of volunteer work.
The food was spectacular. Cooked fresh every night. That was my favorite part, as well as the staff. Everyone was very kind and friendly.
