“check your bills”
Reviewed December 6, 2007

We just returned from our third trip to Costa Rica. We decided to check out a different area so we headed to the Guanacaste region up near the Nicaraguan border. Ecoplaya's grounds are beautiful. The rooms are basic and clean and we liked having a small kitchenette. They reccommend having a car and we totally agree. You need it in this area or you're basically stranded. And you'll need a car to get to the two best beaches in the area (Playa Jobo & Playa Rajada). They offered some day excursions and we did take the trip to Nicaragua. We highly reccommend this and Umberto, who helps with all trips, was wonderful. He's very knowledgeable about not only the region we were in but, Costa Rica in general. We did have something happen at Ecoplaya that was a bit troubling.

We booked this trip through RCI and although Ecoplaya offered an all inclusive package we decided not to go with it. On our first night we had dinner in their restaurant and at the end asked for our bill. My husband asked the waiter if we could pay now or do we just charge it all to our room. The waiter told us it was our preference. He gave us the bill but without a total or a place to sign. My husband gave the check back and politely asked our server to total the bill for us. The waiter returned and said that our bill was $77. We were aware that 13% tax and 10% tip were added, but the bill still seemed extremely high. Also, the prices were on the menu in colones. When we questioned the total the waiter got very agitated and stated that our bottle of water cost $4. I got up and picked up a menu to show him the prices. Another waiter came over with a calculator and figured out that the total was $52. The bill was off by $25. By the way, the price was also shown in colones on the bill and that was also off by the same amount. Our waiter was not very apologetic, in fact he seemed angry about the whole situation. We tried to make light of it saying that mistakes happen and we left him an extra tip on top of the 10%. The next morning when my husband walked into the restaurant to purchase a bottle of water, he received dirty looks and snickers from the very same waitstaff. It made us extremely uncomfortable and we did not want to return there to dine.

We met another American couple who also had an issue with one of their checks. They spent the day by the pool and when they got their bill 2 items were added to it that they did not order or receive. When they pointed it out to the waiter, he claimed that they did order those items the day before. They did not and made them take it off their check.

We asked the front desk if there were any other restaurants in the area and they said no, Ecoplaya's was the only one. This is not true! Blue Dream Hotel (and kiteboarding school) has a small bar & restaurant. They offer pizzas and pastas that are good and reasonably priced. We also discovered a wonderful place called Restaurant Copal (near Copal Beach) run by an Italian couple. The food here was outstanding! Fresh fish grilled or fried whole or filleted. Pasta, cheese and wine all imported from Italy. A great selection of meat, chicken, fish and pasta dishes, as well as very tasty appetizers all very lovingly prepared. And the service was delightful. We would definitely recommend this restaurant over Ecoplaya's.

We decided to check out early (3 days early) from Ecoplaya and drive down to Playa Hermosa and Coco beach area. The only bill we had upon check out was for 1/2 hour of internet use. It's funny, I tried to pay in cash ($2.50) for it the day I used it, but the front didn't have any change and told me they'd just add it to our bill. They did add it, plus another $1.50. I didn't even argue with them about it. I was just happy to be leaving.

We got this thru our timeshare exchange, and while it may have been a decent resort for locals or people looking to do NOTHING, it was not what we were expecting. We had done some checking before, but found that they did good marketing. The resort is about 1/2 hour off a very bumpy dirt road (would not recommend driving at night) from a small village of about 2000 (guessing) population in La Cruz. The room was nice - nice kitchen / living room area, and room large with doors accessing the pool/restaurant area. The restaurant was decent. Not bad, but not worth the cost. The wait staff were better than the front desk staff, who were unresponsive to our needs. The mini-shop is a closet with items for sale. Without going into too much more details, we decided to leave after 2 days. We wanted to explore Costa Rica, not be isolated in a remote hotel. Had this resort been in a more centered location (near more civilation), we may have put up with it.

WINDY beach. Bad Food. Take a walk around the peninsula at low tide and you will find a wonsderland of deserted beaches. Once you round the point of the peninsula, 4km, you are sheltered from the wind. The beaches become calm and beautiful. You will have them to yourself. Allow an entire day to trek around the shore 10km with lots of rocks to climb, fun. If you are less adventurous walk to some of the beaches like playa jabo , 4km via the dirt road. Shell collecting and shore fishing abound. If you enjoy these things and not being shuttled into activities you will love this place. The hotel itself is just that, a hotel. Get out and explore the peninsula especially the leeward side. You came to see the country not the hotel.

Everyone was nice and helpful at Ecoplaya. We enjoyed our one bedroom suite, very spacious and well appointed. We enjoyed the morning briefing upon arrival which provided us with a lot of information. We were then able to go on side trips here and there and we discovered so many beautiful beaches near by. We saw 20 monkeys one afternoon before the sunset, 15 minutes from ecoplaya!
My partner did an afternoon of Windsurfing in front of our apartment! Wow, what a view you have from ecoplaya! There is a windsurf instructor, Mark, who can teach you or simply rent you a board.
Bahia Salinas is beautiful. We went fishing with Nicole (the local activity organizer)at Playa Manzanillo, it was so cool and beautiful. We also had one dinner next door at the other Resort (I forgot the name), and one dinner at the Copal restaurant up on the hill. Our host from Austria and the food were great. I would recommend a week at ecoplaya if you wish to see the pure rancher's country, beautiful vistas and very peaceful surroundings. We took a few days to visit Arenal and Tamarindo. I was not impress with Tamarindo personally. Already too commercial for my taste. Thank you to all the staff at Ecoplaya.

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Ecoplaya Beach Resort. At this time of year it is very windy, so the windsurfers found plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves. The entire trip went very smoothly right from our arrival at the airport in Liberia, the car rental and the trip to the resort. The hotel staff provided us all the information we needed for the week and on the day after our arrival had a meeting to let us know of the area trips and tours that were available. We took two of them, one to Santa Rosa National Park and the other was the day-trip to Nicaragua to see Granada and its environs. Both were excellent, meals included and well worth the price. At the resort we had opted for the all-inclusive meal plan and were very happy that we did. The food was excellent and there was plenty of variety. There are no other restaurants in the area so buy your supplies in La Cruz before you come down the dirt road to the resort (about a 45 minute drive) if you're planning on cooking in your room. We particularly enjoyed the peaceful, relaxed atmosphere at the resort. The staff was very courteous and helpful any time we needed anything. If you're looking for a quiet, isolated spot (with all the amenities), this is the place.

My wife and I visited for 10 days Jan. 7-18 and enjoyed the hotel very much. Staff is extremely attentive and seem to go out of their way to get to know each of the guests. The physical facility is nicely appointed. Most of the clientele are Costa Rican families and the entertainment is geared to their interests. The hotel is located just a few yards from the beach on Baia Salinas and they also have a beach club about 3 km away which offers a better place to swim since the beach adjacent to the hotel is exposed to the NE wind coming across the Bay. Mark who runs the windsurf concession has an adequate inventory of boards and sails and is helpful. I would say that the windsurfing would appeal more to the proficient windsurfer rather than the novice because the wind is quite strong and is on shore. That said, the wind was constantly in the 15-30 MPH range day and night so for those sailing enthusiasts it provides a great venue.

arrived at smal air port in Liberia. Transfer was not there to get us, so we tried to call the resort. No answer. (had tried before from Home to call never get an answer. Other people there said they had same problem you have to E-mail them.) We took a taxi to resort $65.00 they said we would have to pay that much to them if they had picked us up so it didn't make any difference. This resort is far from LaCruz the road is real bad. There is not much in La Cruz if you are looking to shop any. It is was very windy which they said it usually is so good for sail surfing. To get to the better beach and horseback riding you have to drive about 10 min. if you don't have a car they will call you a cab which takes about 30 min. to get from town because they don't have a shuttle. There was not many people there and the ones that were just layed around. Could not get anyone to play volley ball or any other games. Children would be bored. A couple came in when we arrived looked around and canceled there reservations to remote and not many people. The rooms are nice and clean. The food was good but slow to get it, some times cold. The sraff is good about teying to help you speak there language. Ther was no buffet as only have it when there are enough people. The water is good but not much pressure and no water if electricity is off. Almost every thing is late getting started no clocks any where. So if you are going for remoteness, quiet, to just do nothing this would be ok for you. We would have like a little more activity. And more concern for what we wanted to do.
