5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2010

We stayed at Canas Castilla for just one night, but were more than thoroughly impressed. The staff is extremely helpful, pleasant and are great cooks. There's a wood-burning oven where they baked homemade pizzas for us for dinner. Dining area and rooms are all located along the stretch of river, which was incredible. The amount of wildlife in one area is unbelievable: sloths, spider and howler monkeys, herons, kingfishers, hermit hummingbirds, jesus christ lizards, small caimans, etc..... The rooms were incredibly private and charming.

The only thing is, they have fans (no a/c, which wasn't necessary in the clime you're at) and polyester sheets. So, the sheets were a little warm, but everything was incredibly clean and showers had warm water. I would recommend this place to anyone.

The best place in Norhern Costa Rica to see wildlife. Peaceful, rooms on the river. Owners nice and helpful. Food was good. Wish I had more time to spend.

Set in lush woods, orchards and gardens in an isolated spot along the river Sapoa in the far northwest of Costa Rica, Canas Castilla is a quiet spot where to enjoy verdant vegetation and see wildlife while lounging in hammocks or strolling just a few minutes from home. This is our favorite place to stay in Costa Rica, and we've sampled some great ecolodges, from Monteverde to Cano Negro to Arenal. We are biologists with a six-year-old, and what we are seeking on vacation in Costa Rica are locations where we can experience tropical wildlife in natural settings without having to hike far, while based in quiet, family-friendly lodges. By these criteria, Canas Castilla ranks extremely high. (But please note, if you are seeking luxury accomodations, urban experiences, or the company of gringos, this is not the place for you -- it is for naturalists and romantics wanting to get off the beaten track.)

The cabanas are right along the river Sapoa (a wide, beautiful river flowing into the Lago de Nicaragua a few miles to the north), about 2 km on a dirt road off the Panamerican Highway, about 5 km north of the town of La Cruz. It is less than a one hour drive on easy roads with little traffic from the Liberia airport, and makes a fantastic first or last night in the country if you are flying from there -- infinitely better than the places right near the airport for immersing yourself in tropical nature before or after flying. This is also a great place to be based while exploring Santa Rosa National Park's dry tropical forest trails or the secluded, isolated beaches of the far north coast.

The spot is absolutely tranquil and ideal for wildlife viewing. There are huge old-growth trees along the river plus orchards of oranges and mangoes and bananas that attract fruit-eaters. There is a trail to a lofty viewpoint with vistas to the ocean and Lago de Nicaragua, to be enjoyed on foot or by horseback. From the hammock on our river-view porch we watched spider monkeys overhead. Howler monkeys wandered the trees near the riverbank and woke us with their tremendous dawn hoots. We saw an 8-ft crodile lounging on the banks below us. There was a two-toed sloth carrying a baby right above the lovely outdoor dining room and a kiel-billed toucan flying overhead. Trogons, toucanets, and oropendolas are common. We have been here two years in a row in December as a part of two-week trips to Costa Rica, and no where else could we see exotic wildlife so close to our cabins.

The cabins are simple but spacious and clean (either with 1 double and 2 single beds or with 1 double and a kitchen). Breakfast and dinner are served outside in a riverview patio with a thatched roof. The owners are Swiss emigres and they prepare fantastic, healthy and delicious meals with ingredients right from their farm -- fresh-squeezed orange juice from their orchard, eggs from their chickens, home-made bread, and home-made passionfruit and cactus fruit wine.

I booked the accomodations by emailing with the owner, and she (Agi Sutter) was the fastest email correspondent of any of the hotels I booked in Costa Rica. She always replied within a day or two and with long, helpful messages regarding my queries. She speaks English, German, and Spanish (and probably French and Italian, since she's Swiss). The whole Sutter family is a delight, and the daughters wonderfully entertained our six-year-old.
