“Very enjoyable hike - excellent view of the volcano”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

We hiked the nature tour at Arenal Volcano in January 2013. The views of the volcano & Laguna Arenal were outstanding, we were fortunate to have very clear weather. Thanks to Jason, our guide, for such a great tour! He explained the history of the area & of the volcano, we learned a lot. We saw a white-nosed coati, a bunch of white-throated magpie jays, toucans, Montezuma oropendola, Great Kiskadee (flycatcher) and a really cool plant that recoils & wilts when you touch it. We really enjoyed this hike & highly recommend it to others.
Special thanks to Pacific Trade Winds travel agency for arranging everything for us on our Costa Rica vacation.

“Nice hiking”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

The volcano is mostly in the clouds, but the hike through the forest at the base was fun. $10/person admission to the national park (left on dirt road at the police station). They have several trails good for 2-3 hours. You can get up to the 1968 lava flow, or just stay in the shade under the mature canopy. We saw a few animals too.

“Great Volcano View”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

Although our hotel had a view of the volcano this park gives you a much closer view of the peak. We were able to see the major spots in just over an hour with time to stop and take photos and soak up the views. I definitely recommend the lava flow trail - you get a beautiful view of both the volcano and the lake. We visited during the off season so I don't know how much more crowded it would get during peak season but it's worth a hike! We made it through the park without a guide which was more time efficient but if you want to get more information out of the visit I'd recommend a guide.

“A Long Hike but Incredible Views”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We visited the park during January of 2013 and were fortunate to have excellent weather and visibility during our hike. From what we had heard, the volcano can be often shrouded by clouds primarily near the top preventing much of a view from any angle. This proved to be true on other days during our trip, just an FYI if you plan to visit as you may want to asset visibility in the AM before heading out. Overall, the park was a great aspect of our trip. It includes two trails, both connected, one which takes you through the old lava fields and one which loops you around through jungle before taking you back to the parking lot. We rented a car for the day as it is a 30 min trip from Fortuna and probably a $40 cab ride minimum. The hike was long, about 3 hours and 4-5 miles. Of course we were stopping to take pics and videos etc...which takes time. Good heavy shoes are a must as the lava field are craggy and rough. While in the jungle we were able to spot a toucan, monkeys, and a variety or birds. The entrance to the park is not paved so be prepared for a bumpy ride for about 10 mins. Entrance fee was $10 USD when we visited. If you have time afterwards, would strongly recommend continuing your travel west as you will cross Lake Arenal and enter the curvy mountain roads through the jungle which are incredibly scenic. Stop at an interesting hotel called Toad Hall for a bite and you won't be disappointed. Can't miss it as there are signs every 40 feet. Overall an enjoyable part of the trip for us but as one other reviewer put it, if you've seen one volcano it is probably not much different especially considering it is now dormant. Up for you to decide!

This is a beautiful natural park with well-marked trails, easy to traverse. Go with a guide so as to learn the fascinating history of the Arenal Volcano.
