Spent several days there last month, over XMAS week, with hubbie and 4 kids ages—24, 23, 19 and 15. We enjoyed this report immensely, but not for all the reasons stated in the overflowingly positive reviews that populate this site. Everyone talks about the spectacular property and incredible food, but I do not share that viewpoint. We loved it only because we had the best villa on the property, equivalent to a Presidential Suite in another five star property, and only because our travel people said this was the only way to get in, so we massively overpaid. The villa was lovely, and perfect for a family of six. And the grounds and furnishings are gorgeous. However, there is much about this hotel that needs fixing.

First of all, because this is a property that is included in tours (yes, the kind that buses pull up and off traipse 45 day trippers who are staying an inexpensive lodging elsewhere!!) , you have this weirdness of strangers walking thru. As in I was enjoying sake and sushi one evening when 45 backpackers walked by like they were on a school trip…somewhat like the big Fairmount properties in the Canadian Rockies. Second, the food here is not good—period. Have eaten at breakfast buffets at hundreds of properties, and this is one of the worst, down there with a Marriot in the middle of Wisconsin on a bad business trip. I expected piles of fresh tropical fruit and yummy baked goods, instead inedible oatmeal and paste-y pancakes. As to the FOUR restaurants on the property, three of them share a menu literally, they all serve the same exact food for lunch and dinner, strange indeed, so that by the second day you are sick of the offerings. And the food is very very expensive, even by NY and Paris standards, i simply dont get it. Only the sushi is truly good, tho $$$, and even that is a limited menu. The wait staff is great, but they are restrained by these realities as well. Next, Johnny at the Concierge desk is not of a high caliber, he confuses guests and prices, I was not a fan. However, the manager Joey is terrific –track him down and ask him all of your questions Some little things, like the fact that at our villa they had a daily set up of nailing sliced bananas that bring in hundreds of gorgeous birds that feed, but no one told us about this and we nearly missed it, or that our fancy villa did not even have the hummingbird feeders that the rest of the hotel has that I also found out about by accident because I talked to other guests. The gift shop has nothing worth buying and is only open 8-8 which is also very strange for a resort. Did not try gym or spa, but we did love darts and pool table, especially since we had bad weather and hung around more than we expected to. The hot springs are great, very beautiful and private, but they should have towels at various locations…

If they fix the food and get a new concierge team, hotel could be great. The clouds never lifted during our stay, but we had great activities anyway, because Joey hooked us up with Hector, who was one of the best guides we have had anywhere—we did hanging bridges with him and a private volcano hike. Apparently this hotel opened in 2008 midst the awful recession and even though the property is enormous, only 42 rooms got built; They have plans for maybe 100 more, and I am guessing that the problems are because the place cant yet support the operation it was intended for. So the have cut back…Notwithstanding my real criticism of the food and the day trippers, I would recommend this place, it is probably the best in the area….and Costa Rica is a fantastic destination for a winter family vacation.

For the family that is accustomed to a higher level of accomodations and service, the Springs at Arenal is the place you need to stay when visiting this area of Costa Rica. My family of 5, children 23 girl,16 girl, and 14 boy, just returned from Costa Rica and we spent our first 4 nights at the Springs. We chose a 20 minute Nature Air flight from San Jose rather than a 4 hour drive, a great move. In fact we flew Nature Air between all of our destinations and it proved to be a great move as we would see other families arriving many hours after us at both Manuel Antonio and San Jose looking very tired. Our family of five had an Orependola suite which was perfect as my wife and I had a large King Bedroom downstairs with privacy and a deck overlooking the Volcano and my kids were directly above us in a similar room with deck. The rooms were new and immaculate. We asked Johnny the concierge to arrange Rappelling, Zipline, and White water rafting for us and all were amazing. Make sure to ask for private transportation if the transport included stops at multiple hotels. We made a great choice of rafting on the Balsa river because it was a short drive to the river and it was class 2-3 which is much more difficult than a 2-3 in the US. Wave excursions did a great job with the rafting excursion. The Sushi restaurant and Ventanas restaurant were both very good and I would recommend you go in town for a dinner or two. Don Ruffino was very good. I haven't yet mentioned the amazing hot springs that my family spent a lot of time relaxing in. Clean ,hot, and pure pleasure would describe them. Everyone staff member treated us well and made this part of our Costa Rican vacation memorable. Our next stop was Manuel Antonio and another amazing Resort.-See Arenas Del Mar review in Manuel Antonio(for the perfect beach finale).

The Springs Resort is the FULL experience! Beautiful location, innovative rooms, views, and the spring water pools were amazing! Be sure to try the sushi restaurant as well, one of FOUR great restaurants inside the resort. Best stay ever!

Wonderful room to view the volcano and wildlife. The resort itself is breathtaking and the setting far away from the hustle and bustle of La Fortuna. Many pools to lounge in and you never are away from the view of the volcano.

I'm finally getting around to writing this review. This is a 5-star resort. Food is excellent and there are several dining rooms. You're able to lay in a hammock on your balcony and watch all types of wildlife. The grounds are beautiful. There are many different pools/hot springs, so you can always find privacy. We chose a family suite which has a loft with a king-size bed, flat screen TV and it's own private bathroom. Downstairs bathroom is spectacular! Second flat screen TV and second king-size bed are also downstairs, and a balcony with a view of the volcano. This is the green side of the volcano--no lava. Staff is very professional. I can recommend this hotel for the less adventurous travelers. There is a long bumpy road to the resort, but once you reach the gate everything you need is there. This is a good place to do a little R&R, because it has all the niceties. I have put together a video that was taken on the property, the toucan was from our balcony. I hope this will help.
