If you understand what your getting into, this is a perfect place.... our first day in Costa Rica we drove our rental up to the lodge. Yes, 4wd required. It's easy to get turned around a little on the way, but the drive alone was spectacular.... up & into the clouds through gorgeous small towns, mountains, and forest.

It was more like staying in someone's house on a mountaintop farm... the rooms were rustic & simple, but clean & cute. No spanish may be a problem for some-- we were taken care of buy manager, horseback guide, chef, waiter, etc Fausto-- NO ENGLISH-- not a big deal for us...with a little spanish we managed. He handled everything & well. The green is staggering, you can get lost on walks around the property. Food was excellent.... we did a horse tour the second day in & out of little valleys & clouds.... 3 hours. It was beautiful.

If you want crowds, etc-- go to irazu or arenal-- for off the beaten path, go for this place, its all thats up here -- you'll only encounter a few other tourists & the small local community & the beautiful surroundings. BE ADVISED-- you can't got to the rim @ this time because of the gases, but it really didn't affect our feeling we'd been at the volcano closely at all!

We stayed one weekend in June during the 'off season' (rainy!) so there were few other guests.

Our room was clean and ready with a fire in a little cast iron wood burning stove. Our view was over pastures towards the volcano which was streaming smoke and steam Wow! When it was raining, we just enjoyed watching and listening to the downpour. Our suite had two bedrooms with two large beds and their own bath each. The rooms were joined by a common area and well-furnished kitchen (and cable TV, but who needs it). Great arrangement for couples on vacation together. Bring along snacks and drinks.

We took our meals at the dining room which had regular hours for each meal. We had delicious typical Costa Rican food. I believe some of the food had been grown/raised/produced there at the farm. There was a bar and we enjoyed wonderful wine before dinner. Service was very good and friendly.

The clouds and rain showed up in early afternoon, but the mornings were clear and warm. We walked around the dairy buildings and out the farm roads. Bring sunscreen, hats, longsleeve shirts and walking shoes. Add mud shoes and rain coats during the rainy season. Light jacket/fleece might be needed, but it was never cold enough for us.

My only critique was the staff there did not speak English although they were willing to work with me on some of my questions. My husband spoke Spanish and handled the detailed communications

We will be returning for a longer stay (with a few items mentioned above). We loved the setting, views and the quiet.

We did not stay here, but stopped on our way to/from the Volcano. It was the rainy season. There were no guests at that time, but the staff was very helpful regarding the hike up the volcano and providing us with drinks. After our walk up we stopped back at the lodge and the owner was there. He was wonderful to talk with and it is clear that he is interested in making peoples' stay the best he can. The scenery is beautiful, it was so quiet and peaceful. I am actually thinking about taking a retreat group there.

Whle the hotel was adequate for accommodation there was little in the way of ammenities like heat in the room and very much hot water in the shower. Since there were no other guests at the Lodge, it was not possible to do any of the tours. There were no bicycles to rent as advertised and the horse tour required a minimum of two persons. For the price, the food was only so so. What made up for the overcharging and lack of services was the spectacular view of the volcano from my room window and the tranquility of the surroundings. This lodge seems more intested in serving large groups of bicyclists. Be sure to plan ahead six hours to give them notice if you want to use the pool and a day ahead if you want a lunch to carry on your hike up to the volcano. Also, it would have been nice to have a map of trails available around the lodge. As a guest you are pretty much left to fend for yourself. By the way, the Lodge will sell you some of the delicious homemade sheep´s cheese but you have to ask them for it. Good luck if you don´t speak Spanish.

The view from this accommodation is excellent - you see the volcano right from the window. Food was provided three times a day was tasty. Moreover it was mostly typical costarican food, so we were happy that we could taste it. The biggest problem was with the heating - in rooms there was only stove for wood. The staff ( which spoke only Spanish) didnt come so we had to ask them to set a fire and then we had to put more wood on a fire. But the fire went out very soon after we felt asleep, so we woke up during a night and there was approx. 12 degrees in a room! Next day we started heating earlier, but still - the walls were very thin, so after the fire went out, it was cold in the room very soon.
So I can recommend this accommodation for people, who like to be in the heart of nature (before you come here, you travel by car for approx. 1 hour on a muddy unpaved road) and who dont mind to be very cold during night.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. We took an amazing horseback trip to the top of the volcano. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

  • Liked — the location at the foot of the volcano
  • Disliked — it is remote, if you are looking for a peaceful getaway, this is a good spot -- but its a long way from anywhere!
