Kiri Mountain Lodge
Reviewed August 4, 2010

We stayed here after leaving the Sanchiri Mirador. It's way out of town, you can reach it by normal car, but 4X4 is probably more suitable.
The rooms are basic but ok. There are no dark curtains, but if you use the spare blankets the rooms are dark enough, The place is in the middle of nature and we loved it, We do not share the experience about the beds, they were ok and we had two good nights sleep.

Service is excellent, the staff makes you feel very comfortable and they are really helpfull. There is a restaurant and they serve the freshest trout you can ever get. Part of the Kiri lodge is a trout nursery and you can have them for lunch and/or dinner. During breakfast you can see all kind of bird including hummingbirds.

From the lodge it is easy to visit the Orosi valley and the Tampanti national park. You can also do a hike from the lodge, but in the green season the path is very muddy.

My partner and I spent three nights at kiri. A wonderful experience! The hosts are very friendly and aim to please. The location is wonderful, 2.5 km from Tapanti' NP and very isolated. Will return and recommend to any traveler.

This lodge is not for everyone as it is quite isolated but if you are a lover of nature and peace and quiet then this is the place for you. My partner and I stayed for two nights and would have happily stayed for more. The views and surrounding countryside was breathtaking and the lodge itself although basic was perfectly comfortable and clean. The food also was plain but very tasty and the staff did their very best to see that we had all we wanted. Watching the hummingbirds from the veranda while we had our breakfast was delightful.

My wife and I stayed at Kiri Lodge and found it to be a very quiet and pleasant experience. We were surprised at the quality of our room for the price. It was simple, but had beautifully tiled floors. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. The price also included a wonderful "Tico" breakfast.

Kiri Mountain Lodge, 3 miles south of Orosi in Cartago, Costa Rica. Do not be deceived by tour books, at $40 a night this is a grossly overpriced hostel, and a poor hostel at that. Rooms are dark and dimly lighted. Furnishings are sparse – only beds with no mattress covers and rough sheets so thin that the pattern on mattress appears to be the pattern on sheets. Bathroom was like a stone carve. Windows are without screens. This place has a worn feel, very worn. It is the sort of place where one sleeps, no reclines, fully clothed in day clothes. The torture of the beds is such that sleep is difficult and rest is impossible during the 12 hours of totally dark night. However, the roof did not leak and the toilet worked. At any price, there is never a reason to make reservations for this sad shelter. One should come only in extreme desperation when all the many rooms in nearby Orosi are filled and then only if there is no alternative.
