“A Jewel In the Mountains”

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of staying for two nights at the Ambrosia en la Montana and can honestly say that in all of our travels we have never felt more welcome and at ease. The owners treated us as wonderful friends and not just tourists. Settled in the mountainside of the Orosi Valley this place was a hidden gem and the absolute highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. Janie and Franz were excellent hosts and the accommodations were perfect. If you are looking for breathtaking beauty, restful rejuvination, and an authentic travel experience at a very affordable price then I would most highly recommend the Ambrosia! We went during the low season and it was extremely reasonable pricing for the size of the cabin and the overall ambience of the stay. Will definitely visit again if in Costa Rica!

Feel a bit compromised writing this review- as we really liked Janie & Franz, and we did enjoy our stay here, but having got home & had time to reflect it was expensive for the standard of the accomodation itself compared to the other 10 accomodations we stayed in- hence the average overall review (we paid 120 dollars/night and 74 dollars in total for a 3 course meal- which was very tasty- plus a drink one night).
It was about 10 mins/2km's off the highway, up a steep dirt track (one of the better dirt tracks in CR!).
The views off the side of the montain were spectacular over the valley below.
The room was dated but clean and not particularly large compared to our other accomodations; balcony offered great views.
Breakfast was was very nicely prepared by Janie & they were extremely flexible about when we could have it- one morning we had it at 6am due to a planned trip! We liked the homemade jam we had each morning so much we bought 5 jars as presents!

My wife and I had the pleasure to stay 3 nights at Ambrosia and fell in love from the minute we arrived on the property. This place is a hidden little Gem in the Mountains of Cartago.
It was the highlight of our vacation as everything was just so lovely. The hosts Janie and Franz are so very nice, generous, knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. They have put their hearts and souls into this place and it shows.
The meals are terrific - nutritious, authentic, delicious. All eaten inside next to a fireplace or on a lovely porch with a beautiful vista of the surrounding countryside. As for the cabins they are amazing. Simple but very high quality. We loved how cozy the cabins were and how each had its own wood burning fireplace. The front porch on each cabin is so cute, and a really pleasant place to sit and have coffee, read, or enjoy a siesta in the hammock.
Ambrosia en La Montana was one of our most relaxing and memorable stays in Costa Rica. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and left feeling as if we were family. We will definitely return and look forward to seeing and spending time with Janie and Franz.

My husband and I just stayed two nights at Ambrosia en la Montana and loved it. It is a private and romantic place with spectacular views of the Orosi Valley. The grounds are beautiful and Janie and Franz are great hosts. We had breakfast and dinner there both days. Breakfast was delcious fruits, whole wheat bread with homemade jelly from a local fruit I can't remember, delicious coffee, scrambled eggs, rice and beans and tomatoes. Dinner the first night was a local fish I was unfamiliar with but delicious accompanied with bread, vegetables and potatoes and a chilean white wine. The second night we ate light because we had a late lunch and Janie made us a creamy leek soup. Janie is a wonderful cook. We felt very pampered and very welcome. The cabins (there are only 2) are situated high up on a mountain with beautiful panoramic views. It is a very peaceful place. Especially at night when the stars are out. We lit the fire in the fireplace both nights because there was some rain. Orosi is not a tourist trap. It feels like the real Costa Rica. We took hikes in the Tapanti National Park which was very beautiful and then drove around the Cachi Lake with its small towns. We stopped at the Casa del Sonador and bought two coffee root carvings that I think are very interesting and unique. We had lunch at a roasted chicken place along the road that leads around the lake past the dam and back to Orosi. It is a relaxing area with beautiful views everywhere you turn. I would definately recommend staying with Janie and Franz in their cabins if this is what you are looking for. We spent the day before in the nearby town of Turrialba waterfall rapelling and ziplining with Explornatura which was very exciting. Ambrosia en la Montana was the perfect follow up to that with plenty of relaxation. We didn't want to spend all our time driving and Orosi is very close to San Jose but feels like a world away. Words of advice: If you don't have a 4 wheel drive car it might be difficult to get up there. We had a 4 wheel drive and it was fine. It is a steep winding dirt and rock road. It is a bumpy and beautiful drive and my husband kept asking "Are you sure we are going the right way?" Once you arrive you will be glad you persevered. I am leaving with nice memories and hope we can visit again sometime.

Ambrosia blew us away, we enjoyed the experiece so much we decided to leave the beach one day early and return for another night. The view is breathtaking and Janie and Franz instantly became family. The meals we had were fantastic and the cottages very comfortable. I am looking forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: Either cabin is excellent.

They have a knock out view and a couple great little cottages for guests. It's a B&B so you get that personal touch that makes a diference. The owners are really friendly and the best cooking I have had in a while! The dinners are a bit to expensive so you might want to go to the local Soda (means deli) or the fish place next to the entry of this B&B. FYI there is no hot water and the internet does not reach the cabins.

At the suggestion of friends of ours we did a weekend getaway at Ambrosia and were very pleasantly surprised. First our hosts, Jainie and Franz were most welcoming and knocked our socks off the first night with a most excellent salmon dish at their cozy dining room overlooking the entire Orosi valley. We learned that she used to own the former Ambrosia restaurant in San Jose. The next day we hiked the rarely visited Tapanti national park a few km up the road. The trails range from easy to huff and puff and run along a gorgeous river valley. Orosi, the village, is already one of the most picturesque places in Costa Rica in all our travels here.

Another great dinner that night and the next morning Franz, an Austrian mountain goat, took us on a mountain hike with views to the newly active Turialba volcano as well as the Orosi valley below. We departed that morning friends. We'll be back.
