If you are anywhere near San Jose, or passing through Cartago this is a must see location! The Basilica, as it sits on the Plaza Mayor will astound you. From it's architecture outside and in you will be amazed at how amazing it appears. I would prefer this over the Vatican anyday. Never saw a church quite like this!

Also, the Ruinas across the Plaza are equally remarkable.

Although the exterior looks imposing and somewhat boring, the interior of the basilica is extraordinary. The wood and painted columns are a feast for the eye. The chapel at the rear of the basilica houses offerings and notes thanking the Negrita for interceding and helping pilgrims overcome problems, recover from an operation, win a football match.... Do visit, if only for the interior of this beautiful basilica. Just four blocks away are the ruins of the old church, another peaceful spot in the centre of town and another rather beautiful interior. The inside of what was once the church is now a small but well-kept park.

I would rank the beauty of this basilica along with major basilicas in Europe. Watching worshipers crawl on their knees to the alter is truly inspiring and humbling. The church is a total piece of art. And, you must wash in the fountain. You can feel its healing immediately!

The Basilica is a very beautiful cathedral, and is the home of La Negrita. The story goes that back in the 1600s a little girl found a doll and tried to bring it home with her over and over again, but the figure kept returning to the place where she found it. Churchfolk decided that the doll was actually a Madonna, and that a church should be built where she was found. Hundreds of years later, La Negrita is still here, and the cathedral thrives. It has a very nice interior (be respectful if there's a service going on, though) and if you go around back there's an entrance that exhibits thousands of trophies, medals, and other offerings to the Madonna. There's also the creek that many believers wash in, hoping for a miracle. It's a very cool church, regardless of your religious leanings, and worth a look in if you happen to be in the area.
