They have a gift shop and a museum. This helped to understand the culture and why it is so important to the Costa Ricans. The church is beautiful and the plaza is simple. The parking is a challenge but if you park a block or two away it is doable. However, do not leave your valuables in the car.

Came by this place after briefly checking out the ruins, the cathedral was open and it had a wee museum in the basement explaining the history of the vanishing rock miracle. The inside of the cathedral was truly stunning and the glasses were well illustrated with vibrant colors. I'd recommend going there; but, not on a rainy day..

We have visited many times this beatiful Basilica in Cartago.
There is much history about the culture of the area and the pilgrams that walk every year.
The area is beautiful, lots of information and small "sodas" around for eating.

The people are extremely friendly with great customer service.
Please remember that you are visiting a church and dress appropirately.

The only downside is there are no bathrooms, you have to pay at local stores to use the restrooms.
Worth visiting the Irazu Volcano and then coming to Cartago for the Basilica! An excellent adventure / day trip from Turrialba!

... but the rest of Cartago is quite boring, especially compared to other old towns of Central America.
