A well maintained and well stocked garden, under the auspices of the University of Costa Rica. The facility was not crowded and was very accessible from Paraiso. Several collections were noteworthy, inc. a stand of bamboo trees. The atmosphere is relaxed and shady. The UCR students who admit people from within the gift shop were friendly and informative.

Returning from our visit to Irazu, our group was invited to visit the garden owned by UCR. The garden is not big, but is special. It is well designed, so that you will cover all areas by following the main route. I was impressed by the colors and shapes of those plants and trees and flowers. There are two separate areas. One is the Japanese garden, which seems to be a distraction. It is nice, but does not belong. The other is the orchard area. I have to say that it is pretty but not breath-taking. Only later did I realize that this garden features epiphytes, the plants that grow on but do not feed on other plants. I told my colleague that this is very much like a mini-paradise. He agreed.

I liked the most the orchid collection and the Japanese Garden, the fern garden was messy, but the rest was very good.

We enjoyed the diversity of each type of garden at Lankaster. The orchids are amazing. A must-see for any visit to Cartago!

A beautiful botanical garden less than 25 miles from San Jose. Take a bus to Cartago, and then a bus to Paraiso and ask to be let off at the gardens. It is then half a mile up the road on the right.
Laid out in sections of the different varieties of plants and trees - most of them local varieties, except for the Japanese garden. Well maintained, and the possibility of seeing large numbers of orchids. One quibble - there is almost nowhere to sit and contemplate the surroundings. A few benches strategically placed would make this spot ideal.
