“This is my FAVORITE place to stay in the San Jose area.”

Love this hotel. The staff are so gracious and helpful. They are very observant and watch you so if you order hot chocolate one day, they automatically bring it to you the next day. Always ready to help with whatever you need to make your stay awesome. It's not Hyatt Place or the Marriott - it is a place where you get the true feel of Costa Rica and their hospitality.

The ground are BEAUTIFUL and the rooms and cabins are clean, secure and very comfortable. And they are always updating to make this hotel even better. I don't really every want to stay anywhere else in the San Jose area.

I took a group of 11 this trip and it worked perfectly.

STAY HERE - you will not regret it!

Room Tip: I love the cabins! They have added one that has two double beds now. Rustic feeling but so clean an...

We chose the hotel because of the many good reviews here on tripadvisor, but it ended up being the worst disappointment of our vacation so far.

First disappointment came when the person who let us in was unable to smile or speak a single word of english (that's not a metaphor - he really didn't speak a single english word). That was surprising because their website seems very english and the hotel name is english as well.

Then the rooms: We didn't get a cabin but a room without any windows. Until then I didn't even know there were hotel rooms without windows. It was spacious, but that was the only good thing about it. It smelled old and damp, there were small moths flying around and it really felt more like a cave than anything else. The bathroom was really well sized and actually had a small window from where you could see the top of a tree. Hooray. The door to the bathroom was hard to close which is kind of annoying when you're in a hurry to use the toilet but don't want to do it with the door wide open.

Our room was right next to the common hall / main room where breakfast is served and people go to use the internet. The door to our room had a window in it were the light from the main room was shining in when we were trying to go to sleep, and where the light was shining in when people outside were getting up. In our case that was sometime really early in the morning because they started serving breakfast at 6 in the morning. The noise from the main room was considerable as well.

Speaking about noise, the floor of our room was made of wood that was creaking really loud when you walked on it. So everybody woke up each time someone needed to use the bathroom at night. All in all we slept really bad.

In the morning there was a much nicer person at the reception who quickly saw that we obviously were not well rested. He offered us a five dollar discount and let us move out after one night (we made reservation for two nights) which was really nice of him.

Another small thing that was somewhat annoying: We only got a key for our room but not for the front door. That way we always depended on someone letting us in or out.

Room Tip: Don't take the one without windows in the main building. You'll probably be a lot better of...

Stayed a night at one of the private cabins prior to visiting irazu volcano the next morning. Private cabin is amazing. Big and clean, a heater in cabin for the cold nights, nice comfortable beds. Complementary breakfast and most of all.... 30 min drive to irazu volcano. Wifi, lots of outlets, and amazing service.

Also, when searching for beer during the middle of the night, the receptionist was extremely kind enough to offer us beer that he had gotten for himself. This act of kindness will def have me coming back here when I visit Irazu.

Room Tip: CHOOSE THE CABINS over normal rooms.... especially the two cabins closest to the reception area as w...

I couldn't say enough good things about Grandpas. I've stayed with them for four consecutive years on group travel service trips I lead. Gustavo and the staff could not be more accommodating. You truly feel as comfortable as you would at home. The energy around the hotel is one of love and service. Nevermind the view you wake up to every morning! It's not on a busy street-it's on the road that goes to the Irazu volcano. So it's close to sight seeing at the Irazu but still close enough to downtown Cartago for shopping and city sight-seeing. -both are taxi rides away. I always feel 100% safe there. I never worry about my belongings and have 100% trust in the cleaning staff. It can get quite chilly at night, however, because of the elevation! All meals are home-cooked and fresh. They just built a larger cabin on the grounds.-you can either choose to stay at a cabin or in the home. Stay at Grandpa's if you're looking for a home away from home-you won't regret it!

Room Tip: The house can be noisy if there are a lot of people staying there. The cabins are beautiful and quai...

If you are looking for someplace close to Irazu this place fits the bill. We stayed in a little cabin - very cute, basic. Great views. Only spent one night. We were amazed how cool it is up that high. Nice breakfast. Great place to be to get up to Irazu first thing in the morning. We drove from the airport across San Jose, starting in the late afternoon, and it took us about 3 hours (about 50 miles). Arrived in the dark. We ate dinner at the 1910 Cafe next door, which was great. Good meal, nice atmosphere.

Stayed here 1 night at one of the private cabins prior to visiting irazu volcano the next morning.

Pros:
- private cabin is really private, big and clean
- heater in cabin for the cold nights
- nice comfortable bed
- breakfast was good
- 30 min drive to irazu volcano, so you can be there in time before the clouds come rolling in
- free wifi

Cons:
- although there should be warm water, we didn't get it in our room..!
- staff was ok, but not make you feel really welcome
- not much else to do in the surrounding of the hotel
- wifi worked only in the lobby and dining area.

I visit this hotel with my 2 kids and my parents. The place is clean, well maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful.
The breakfast is awesome, the portions big and balanced.
If you get the inside room (number 5) can get a bit noisy around breakfast time. But that was just a tiny thing.... The rest was great....
