A wash out. A top tip is to check the web cam if the weather looks dodgy - Avoid. We pre-booked tickets on the rather creaky national park website for USD 15 per adult. This suggests you book 48 hours ahead of time. After a perfunctory safety briefing in Spanish we trolled up to the crater. We were greeted by fog bank of vaguely sulphurous mist obscuring everything. There are no secondary attractions, therefore do check before going.

Worth taking a look at this active volcano while driving through towards La Fortuna. After basic briefing a 5-10 minute walk takes you to the viewing area above the crater. Get tickets in advance.

Despite the beautiful, sunny drive up to Poas it was too cloudy to see anything. We were disappointed but still had a nice walk and just used our imagination!

Remember this park's activities will vary with the volcano's activity. When we went the volcano was quiet and stable but was more active a year before. Because of this many trails were closed. The time at the top was not as limited because of favorable winds. It still did not smell good because of the sulfure coming out of the crater. Awesome views. Almost no explanation from the park rangers.

Poas Volcano is a very cool visit when the view is clear. Go EARLY in the morning!!! However, since the recent eruption the trails have been closed which is a bit of a bummer. It's also a drag that one only has 15 minutes at the caldera edge.
