“Breathtaking views at best-kept secret near Poas”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

I cannot say enough about this place and the proprietors! We got the suite and were astonished by the beautiful workmanship and views. It is pretty much a glass house! We sat at the Viewpoint and watched the sun set. Everyone was extremely helpful and gave us great tips on local places to eat.
Included in the (already low) rates was an authentic breakfast, served in the communal dining room. Best breakfast of the trip, with cheese made from the milk of their cows on site! That was so incredible!
If you want a quiet, low-key place to stay, I highly recommend it. We were here first night for one night, saw the volcano and then headed to other places. If I was with a significant other, I'd stay here longer, but there's no real town to speak of, for entertainment.

Room Tip: The suite is set back, a bit into the jungle and the views from all sides are amazing! Be prepared...

Set on a mountainside near the Poas volcano, this is a place of spectacular views of the Central Valley of Costa Rica and the mountains. The rooms are modern and impeccable, the breakfasts deliciously traditional. There is a family atmosphere, as the owners, a doctor and his wife, a microbiologist, live just across the grass. They and their daughter were exceptionally generous. We didn't have a car and when we couldn't get a cab in this rural area, they insisted on driving us to see the volcano and to a nearby restaurant so that we could have dinner. (I suggest renting a car).

We stayed at the Altura Hotel for our first 2 nights in Costa Rica. It was absolutely fantastic.
The room was gorgeous with its high ceilings and extra loft bed for the kids was perfect.
It is situated near the Poas Volcano and the Paz Waterfall Gardens - a great park. The area and grounds are stunning. Roberto and his family were so friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was delicious.
I would highly recommend this hotel - it's only a 40 min drive from San Jose Airport.

We just got back from our Costa Rican honeymoon, and the first place that we stayed was the Hotel Altura. Our journey started out with a bit of tumult, as our rental car was not available and we were also not able to obtain a GPS. Our car rental agent contacted Alejandro, who came and met us along the way to ensure that we made it to the hotel. Along the way, he also stopped with us and spoke with a local restaurant who made sure that we were able to eat since it was so late.

This outgoing and selfless nature easily warranted a five star review, and that is without saying how wonderful the property is. Nestled into the Costa Rican hillside, the hotel property is well maintained and offers fantastic panoramic views of the city below. We slept very well and were treated to a great breakfast featuring fresh homemade cheese in the morning.

We chose here due to the proximity to the Paos Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens. It was easy to get to both. Definitely stay here if you have the opportunity. I'm confident you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Altura hotel

Vv pleased to get here after a GPS wild goose chase that ended up with us driving up into the mountains on twisty roads in the dark and fog (with sundry pedestrians, cyclists and potholes as additional challenges!). Advice to novice GPS users - double check: the location is on the road up to Paos Volcano.

We received a very friendly welcome from our host despite the time of our arrival and we were shown to our beautiful large, contemporary room. Funny to be grateful for the electric stove - it was really chilly, in complete contrast to everywhere else we stayed in Costa Rica! It's a very different climate up in the mountains, despite seeing the expansive lights of the central valley cities - so we knew we weren't far from places where it was much much hotter.

The benefit of having arrived in the dark was the extra special treat of looking out the windows the next day to see alpine-like pastures with black and white dairy cows and the daytime view down the mountain. A beautiful location. Had an incredible experience at Paos Volcano that morning. Initially v disappointed to find ourselves staring into the abyss - vv dense fog in the crater, but as the sun came out whilst we were walking around the nearby trails, we headed back up to the crater and were rewarded with a stunning clear view. So don't give up too quickly - it's a v changeable weather system it seems (much like Scotland, our home!).

V good breakfast - best of the traditional style breakfasts we had on our trip. To summarise - really lovely, genuine hospitality in gorgeous contemporary accommodation and in a very special part of a wonderful country. Very very enjoyable stay. Would have loved to stay longer - but had to head off down the mountain for a remarkably short transfer to the airport, for our flight home.

I don't enjoy watching films as I used to, once I watched "Cinema Paradiso"
I don't enjoy listening to music as I used to, once I listened to PROAC Reference Speakers.
Now It seems, I did it again…
After staying in this hotel, you keep wondering.
Is it the View? Well you can find such views in other places in CR.
Is it the structure of the building? Well you could find more fancy Buildings
Is it the interior design? Well you should know what comes now.
But when you take all of these together, you get something that touches your soul, and you know there is nothing else like that hotel.
It all begins with the great view all around the hotel. Then when you get into the room (2nd Floor), you can feel that the interior decoration was done with a really talented person. Every little thing is just the right thing in the right place. Not to mention the huge windows… Oh La La, those windows just bring this great view, right into the room.
Breakfast is great too, it is based on C.R. traditional breakfast and it is vary delicious. But if you would like an Omelet, you can have it too.  (Hi Hymena)
Above all are the owners, they were just great, helping, advising, and trying to do the best, that you will enjoy your staying at the hotel as much as possible. Well they succeed.

We spent the final night of our stay in Costa Rica at the Altura Hotel after two weeks in the Arenal area and on gorgeous Santa Teresa Beach. This enabled us to experience yet another unique Costa Rican environment. We enjoyed the magical view from far above San Jose, with its lights twinkling below. We hiked around the beautiful grounds and enjoyed the brisk evening and cozy fireplace in our room after a week of beachy heat and humidity. The owners and staff went well out of their way to make us feel welcome and to accomodate our every need (booking dinner reservations, pirinting out our boarding passes, offering advice about a visit to the Poaz Volcano). And because the hotel is so close to the entrance to the volcano and the best time to visit is early in the morning, we were able to do some great sight seeing before heading to the airport the day of our departure. Definitely more rewarding than just a dull day of travel!
