“A WONDERFUL hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2009

We did a lot of research on Trip Advisor before deciding to book part of our honeymoon at Nayara and we are so happy we made the decision to stay here. From the moment we arrived when Jonathan gave us fresh juice and cool towels, we knew we'd enjoy our stay. All of the staff were genuinely nice, not in that stuffy, high-end hotel "I HAVE to be nice to you" kind of way, and wanted to provide exceptional service to all guests.

Not only was the staff helpful and kind, but they managed and maintained the hotel flawlessly. There was clearly a lot going on "behind the scenes" that we didn't see and a lot of maintenance to keep the hotel and gardens in such an impeccable state, but we hardly saw any of this. From our first day to our last day at Nayara, we could not stop talking about how beautiful the gardens are. We loved walking through them and it made eating breakfast and lunch in the restaurant and relaxing at the pool that much more enjoyable. The colors are just amazing.

On to the rooms...our room was wonderful. Incredibly clean (though at night I would not turn on the lights above the beds since it will attract some of the small gnats that inevitably find their way into the room), the privacy of having your own separate room is great, and the generous size and layout of the room keeps you from feeling cramped. My favorite aspect of the room was the great balcony with two comfy arm chairs facing the volcano. It was wonderful to have a private, quiet place where we could relax and read in between activities or if it rained in the morning while we waited for the sun to come out.

We also thoroughly enjoyed the food and service at the hotel restaurant, Altamira (make sure you try the Typical/Tortilla soup!), which was reasonably priced and offered a relaxing dinning atmosphere. The drinks at the pool were great and not very expensive. The bartenders are also great and fun to talk to. Oh, and by the way, the pool is wonderful especially when it is really clear and you can see the top of the volcano, but watch out for that Costa Rican sun!

We were also able to take advantage of the Spa while we were there and got a couples massage. The Spa is actually one of the rooms that was converted for this purpose, so it isn’t really fancy and is pretty basic in appearance. However, having a cool, tropical breeze whisk by and hearing the sounds of nature while you’re getting a massage is unreal and worth every penny.

After we left Nayara for a 5-star hotel in a different area of the country, we couldn’t help but compare it to Nayara and often came to the conclusion that Nayara was better and wish we had stayed there longer.

MY wife and I recently spent 4 nights at the Arenal Nayara and had a great time. This is a fantastic hotel set amongst lush tropical vegetation. ALL of the employees we dealt with were attentive, friendly and helpful. Each room is an individual villa that is private and comfortable and I belieive each room faces the Arenal volcano. The food at the hotel restaurant is very good. Breakfast is included and consists of a nice buffet spread that changed somewhat each morning. We would stay here again in a heartbeat and highly recommend it.

In my fourth trip to Costa Rica including 4 excursions to the Volcan Arenal area, this is my first trip including my wife and I without our kids. Arenal Nayara was the perfect romantic getaway we looked for! First, unlike some of the resorts in the Volcan Arenal area, Arenal Nayara is quite easy to get to (no 20km drive on a potholed rock road), but yet feels like you're a million miles from the bustle tourist center in Fortuna.

To start, when you arrive you’ll be attended to very personally with the staff ensuring you have a smooth reception and check in to the resort. Initially we were given a golf cart tour of the grounds which are gorgeous – private, individual cottages are spread apart surrounded by beautiful, meticulously maintained gardens. Once you enter your room, you'll find a luxuriously appointed suite with a beautiful private deck including the two-person hot tub with one of the most spectacular views of Arenal Volcano I’ve ever experienced. Comfortable beds, high speed internet (yes we used it once…), individually controlled A/C (yes, it also was a bit humid some days) and overall excellent layout for our few days at Arenal Nayara. Begin each morning waking up in bed with views of the garden and volcano and continue to the outdoor private shower which was amazing – what a way to begin every day! Maybe relax at the pool with swim up bar or continue your daytrips before returning to your private suite for star filled nights waiting to watch the amazing volcanic eruptions.

The resort helped us plan our itinerary/tours and will arrange for transporation (we didn’t need it) for offsite activities. We ate at the hotel on Thursday theme night (Costa Rica “typical” night) and loved the food. The daily breakfast spread was excellent and we of course loved the fresh tropical fruit. One thing to note – this resort really has a romantic feel – while we saw some kids at the resort, it may not be perfectly suited if you have young kids. Two years ago we stayed at the Arenal Observatory Lodge with our 3 young kids and had a blast – you might consider that if you have kids maybe 8 and under.

The gardens around the hotel were beautiful and the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Most of the employees spoke english and would make phone calls and translate for us. The only thing was the hotel lobby closes at 10pm, we arrived at 9:30pm and had no idea of this. I don't know what we would've done if we had arrived late. The rooms were very large, a little worn, but not that bad. The pool was very nice. For $190 it was a nice place, but it's just not the same luxury as the US. You probably can find a hotel that is almost as nice for less money.

Arenal Nyara is a beautiful hotel. As of this December, it is one year old and is in excellent condition. The ground are gorgeous and are full of tropical flowers and plants.

We stayed in room 3, which had two queen beds. It had both and indoor and outdoor showers and a large jacuzzi on the deck. Each room overlooks Volcano Arenal and it is quite a view! The room was very large and comfortable with air conditioning. However, the bathroom does not afford much privacy.

The food was good, but not great.

The staff was very friendly and they had two laptops available in the lobby for guest use.

My kids loved the talking parrots and friendly rabbits as well as the pool.

This is an amazing place to stay. Stayed there for 5 nights from Dec. 22-27 of 2008. The views from the pool, the paths within the grounds, the club house, and from my villa were amazing. Stayed in #23 and it probably has the best view-No obstructions!!! The room was awesome and the outside shower is great. The hot tub on the balcony is great too!!!

The pictures the hotel has on its website does not do it justice!!!

Jimmy, Jonathan, and the rest of the staff are amazing!!!

The food in the restuarant was good and cheap.

Used Costa Rica Shuttle for all driving needs in Costa Rica. It would have taken 2 and half hours to get to hotel from San Jose but our driver was nice and let us stop for food and some beers. Great company to use. Ask for Ricardo; He is super nice and he speaks both english and spanish.

Arenal Nayara is an absolutely gorgeous eco lodge near Arenal Volcano and near the town of Fortuna. The landscaping alone is reason to see this hotel, but the friendly and helpful staff make your stay very relaxing. The food was very good, the drinks were great, the jacuzzi pool is so lovely and perfect temperature, but the room (villa) was the real highlight. We traveled with our two children and booked a suite with two queens, and it worked perfectly. The view from our balcony was amazing staring right into the rainforest with the Volcano looming above it when it came through the clouds. The deck also had a hot tub and the room had a wonderful outdoor shower that we all really enjoyed. The staff was very friendly with children although my children are not too noisy and i could see how noisy or very rambunctious children may not go over as well. the pool is great for the kids, but it is a jacuzzi and not deep or large for big swims. It is meant for more relaxation and if i were there on a couples trip in that beautiful spot, loud continuous noise would definitely spoil the atmosphere. Very clean, relaxed and gorgeous hotel.
