“What a beautiful place - when can I return?”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

We arrived at the Nayara Hotel having read before we left that it was voted as one of the best hotels in the world as voted by tripadvisor contributors. Surely not, we thought. We stayed for 3 nights and found that this is more than justified. We have stayed in a lot of 'top' hotels, but the Nayara take attention to detail to another level. The guest facilities, the service staff, the rooms, the location, (the weather too for us, as we were very lucky to have 3 clear days with volcano views.)
There is a local celebrity who entertains guests - Carlota the Macau parrot. She arrived one morning at breakfast to eat a sugar sachet from the table, she flies around the grounds, appearing anywhere.
We asked for a taxi for one evening to take us into La Fortuna town to eat and were surprised to find that we had a member of the hotel staff accompany us to make sure we arrived at our destination, although there is no problem with security, etc. It was just to make sure we went where we needed to go and to arrange the return trip.
They cannot do enough for their guests and take professional service to another level.
A tip for guests: next door to the Nayara over a connecting footbridge less than 100m away is the sister complex, Nayara Springs which has bigger romantic couples villas. There is a superb pool and double sunbeds and is bigger and quieter than the Nayara's own pool - no kids allowed. They don't show it on the plan for the hotel, but you can find the bridge next to the spa. They don't mind anyone using it, but we were not told about it at reception.

Room Tip: I understand all rooms have a view of the volcano. Worth double checking. When clear the view is spe...

We were toward the end of a very active long trip so our beautiful room and the thermal spas were most welcome. I would have loved to cancel everything scheduled and spend two full days in the spa, but I did fit in a manicure and leg wax. Beautiful facilities. Loved the open air dining. Front desk staff were quite friendly and helpful (although we didn't need them as Costa Rica Expeditions had arranged everything for us.) Beautiful grounds. Gorgeous pink ginger everywhere. Stunning view of the volcano directly in front of us from our terrace. The hammock was enjoyed each afternoon. Just sorry we didn't have time for at least three more days.
Never saw the macaw, but we had seen two beautiful ones at the end of Crocodile Bridge our first morning inland Costa Rica.

Room Tip: I doubt there is a bad room at this hotel. We were just across from the thermal spas, so loved that...

We only stayed here one night before leaving La Fortuna for Quepos. It was more for one night here than it was for 3 in Cerro Azul but totally worth it for the experience. From the moment we parked our car, we knew we were in a whole new world of luxury. They picked us up from the car in a golf cart and drove us (50 feet) to the front door. Our luggage was already brought to the hotel for us because our friends checked in earlier. By the time we got to our room, our luggage was there waiting for us.

Upon checking in they gave us complimentary drinks to get us settled. We meandered the grounds while waiting for the room to be prepped and our host found us in his golf cart (I don't know how he knew where we were!)

Everyone on the Nayara staff seemed to know who we were and anticipate our needs. It was really amazing and I can only imagine how efficiently and affectively the resort is run behind the scenes.

We had massages at the spa, which was a wonderful experience.

Dinner at the wine bar was really cool too. They give you RFID cards and have a wall full of wine bottles. But inserting your card, you can select your wine of choice and pour either 1 oz. up to a full glass and it gets charged to the RFID card and settle up at the end. Brilliant.

Unfortunately I caught something before coming to Nayara and spent the rest of my time there sick as a dog. (At least sick and comfortable!) The next morning I was picked up by a golf cart to go to breakfast and check out. The staff was so helpful and accommodating! I didn't want to eat but they brought me epson salts, chamomile tea, and gave me some dramamine-type medicine to help with the 6 hour car ride. They wanted to call a doctor for me, but I didn't see the point.

All in all, this resort lives up to its reputation and although it's very expensive, it is worth it in every way. I haven't even mentioned the rooms- which were beautiful and comfortable.

My only complaints are that they're so high tech, I had trouble figuring out how to do simple things like adjust the AC, and their grounds are beautifully manicured but very easy to get lost.

Nayara was the first stop on our vacation and could not of found a better place to stay. my husband and i flew in after 2 flights and yes very long drive to nayara by private transfers. i personally would not stay a night close to airport, because i just want to get there and settle in and felt i didn't miss a thing by doing so. All bungalows are quietly placed and felt secluded. We were in #37 that is a bit walk from everything and up a hill, but i would not ask for a closer one. the walk is nice to see scenery, plants, and animals. We had a couples massage that was wonderful. went to town a few days by taxi which was $10 each way for shopping and lunch. One day we took taxi to tabacon hot springs, which water was a bit hot for weather in afternoon, best to probably go in the evening. The hanging bridges was very nice although we did not see a lot of wildlife on trip. La fortuna water was last trip and it is definitely a hike down to reach water fall, but is nice scenery and hike back up is not for everyone. I told many breaks to make it back to top.
We had only ate in the Altamira Restaurant as park of a package and found the food to be out of this world. Some of best meals i have ever ate. We had spent a lot of time at pool bar which was nice talking to all bartenders every day. We tried wine bar which for me found i would not of missed anything if i had not gone.
The resort is not geared for kids, although there were some there. I think they would get bored quick here. Over all i would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: If you can take climb up hill i would get one away from pool area.

High end hotel. Juan Carlos was a very engaging waiter. He made fantastic guacamole. Fresh fruit and juices every morning for breakfast was awesome. Plenty of activities around and the town La Fortuna is a welcoming surprise. Carlotta is a beautiful Scarlet Macaw that welcomes you to La Naraya.

Room Tip: Treat yourself.

Bienvenidos with the discovery that opening the curtains Arenal is right there on a clear warm morning. And Carlotta the macaw who hangs from the roof and takes grapes from my hand (see video). Beautiful hotel. Spectacular service and attentive not intrusive staff. Fab rooms with a necessary amenities. I do not know when I would sit in the room to watch borrowed videos from the front desk! Ate delicious sushi on arrival. And this is only the first 14 hours. Headed to Arenal. Got a great package with Nayara that includes three nights 3 course dinner, a 5 course wine pairing dinner, hanging bridges walking tour, zip line, hot springs, hot stone massage and daily breakfast. Highly recommend you figure that out with them on reserving it is great to arrive just to have to schedule your fun.

This is a very special hotel because of the layout of the casitas amongst the gardens and tropical rain forest. Because of the friendly people. Because of the good food, the great spa, the service and desk staff are extra helpful. The casitas are so comfortable. The highlight was the romantic dinner up in the treetops. Book it as it is worth it! The addition of the Nayara Springs Hotel across a walk bridge offers other dining experiences and a swim pool. More for adults. We definitely would return to this wonderful hotel.
