“Stunning Hotel, Flawless Service”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

From the minute you arrive you realise Nayara Hotel is something special. Friendly, wonderful, brilliant staff! The villa rooms are absolutely stunning and enormous, with a spa bath on the deck, great for lounging. Excellent breakfast sitting on the deck in the sunshine with a great view of the volcano. A huge thanks to the manager Freddy for making a superhuman effort for us also, you're a superstar! I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: All rooms are great

We arrived at Naraya after spending time in Drake Bay, so it was quite a change. Our previous hotel was La Paloma Lodge, which was an isolated ecolodge and did not meet our expectations for a luxury resort. We arrived to Nayara around 2 PM after a long drive from San Jose and our room was not ready, we had to wait an hour. They did offer us some fruit drinks which were very refreshing. When we got to our room we were promised a volcano view, but we could not see the volcano at all, it was obscured by tropical vegetation. We were so tired, that we decided to stay in the room and not asked to be changed since it had taken so long to get checked in. The lobby area has 4 lap top computers which are always available. Also, they will allow you to call back to the US for free from their phones behind the desk, which was great because mjy husband and I are both physicians and needed to make some important phone calls. We ate dinner in the restaurant the first night and it was amazing. The cerviche was to die for,,, and i got the recipe from the chef. (don't worry i won't divulge the secret ingredient!) Really good food and reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet had anything you could possibly want,,,, the fresh fruits were sweet as sugar. We were out touring all day and did not use the pool but we could hear loud music coming from it when we walked past. The rooms themselves are all very large, with porches that contain a hammock and a hot tub, nice for relaxing. THe only reaosn i gave it a 4 and not a 5 star rating was that we had asked for a recomendation for a safarai rafting trip. We went with Canoa Adventures. It was a complete waste of time. Do not waste your money! You sit on a dirty raft (4 people to a raft) plus a guide for 2 1/2 hours and float down a river which has little current, lots of bugs, and nothing to see. Also there is so much down time as you have to wait for them to inflate and deflate the rafts. When we returned, we told Lindsay who was working behind the deck, and she proceeded to scold us and say that were were the exception to the rule and every other guest had always had rave reviews. Well if you enjoy sitting with no back support on a dirty bug infested rubber raft for nearly 3 hours and wasting hours doing nothing,,, then this activity is for you. What ever happened to the "customer comes first"? Anyway, except for Lindsay's rude comments, this hotel provided outstanding service and i would recommend staying here. I would suggest taking a tour with a guide around the Arenal Observatory, you will see the most amazing animals and wildlife. And do the Hanging Bridges with a guide as well, you will not be disappointed.

Dear valued guest,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Nayara.

I will pass on your compliments about the food to the entire food and beverage team who I am sure will be proud to learn that they not only met, but exceeded, your expectations.

We apologize that your volcano view was obstructed by the lush vegetation. Please accept our sincere apologies that this was not met. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the tour and we are disheartened to learn that one of our colleagues was not supportive of your very valid concerns. Please know that we have addressed this matter directly not only with the team member in question, but with all of our staff. We are very careful when selecting tour companies as our partners and frequently review our relationships with those we do select. After receiving similar feedback from yourself and others we no longer work with the operator that you mentioned in your review.

Should you want to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact me at 1-866-311-1197 or resident.manager@arenalnayara.com.

Sincerely,

Jorge Gutierrez

We booked a volcano view room and were first given a room that once had a volcano view, but all the vegetation had grown up and you couldn't see the volcano anymore. We asked to move to a room in alignment with what we had reserved and paid for. They immediately came and moved us to a room with a beautiful volcano view (#34). The people and service were fabulous. The resort is gorgeous, the paths are well lit and safe. The niches with hot tubs and the setting in general was just fabulous. I agree with another writer that the pool is not for swimming, but fun as a relaxing, swim up bar. Thank goodness we didn't have the loud music that writer experienced at the pool. The food was wonderful. We had a hammock and hot tub on our deck - both very nice and comfortable. We had room service one night for dinner and it was quick and delicious.

Room Tip: Room #34 had a BEAUTIFUL view of the volcano.

My wife and I stayed at this paradise in February, 2012. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Everything was outstanding-gorgeous room, beautiful grounds, excellent food, including a very cute sushi bar with lots of folk art, lots to do, and hospitality beyond belief. We still cannot believe what the owner did for us. We were admiring the unusual and beautiful paintings in the lobby and learned they were made by a small tribe of indigenous people, the Maleku. We wanted to get some of these paintings and bring them home. We were told to speak to the owner, Angelo. He said they would not sell these paintings to us but offered to get us a couple the next day when he would be near where they lived. That same evening, while eating dinner, the waiter brought over the phone and told me I had a call. It was Angelo, telling me he had gotten 4 paintings and we could choose any 2 we wanted. We still don't know how he tracked us down during dinner! We were just flabbergasted at his thoughtfulness. In any event, everyone at this wonderful place was so friendly and accommodating it made our trip so special and memorable. They even have the cutest bunny as a hotel pet on the grounds. We would never even think of staying anywhere else in the area if we ever visit Costa Rica again.

Room Tip: We had the least expensive room available and it was huge and gorgeous.

Everything written about this hotel I would confirm. The staff, setting, accommodation and food was first class.

So why only 4 stars? My problem was with the pool area.As stated in reviews-the pool area is very small-not a swimming pool but a swim up bar.I can live with that but when children are around- as happened in our first week- they take it over. This is not a resort that caters for children and I can't blame them because at the hotel there is nothing else for them to do.Unfortunately it does impact on guests that want to just enjoy a wallow. This hotel seems to run at almost 100% capacity and is sited as one of the top romantic hotels in the world-perhaps the Management need to consider making it adults only.In any event if you are considering staying and you feel this situation might be an annoyance for you it might be an idea not to book during school vacations.

This brings me onto my other issue. At 10am the swim-up bar opens and the loud music begins and continues all day.If you're into rap music played at high decibels you will be in seventh heaven. If not-you have a problem. The barman obviously enjoys it but I will leave that to the Management to decide if that is sufficient reason for it to continue.

We ate at the hotel restaurant a number of times and found the quality of the food and choice very good.We also ate in La Fortuna 3 times.Don Rufino(good food but pricey-definitely book if you want to go),La Parada(cheap and cheerful)and La Choza de Laurel. The latter was our favourite-good helpings of tasty food in a unique setting.

We stayed in one of the suites and it was wonderful. The grounds were beautiful and the food was great. All the staff were very kind and helpful. I would love to go back.

Room Tip: We had a room at the top of the hill facing the volcano. The view was beautiful.

My husband and I spent 2 nights here on our honeymoon, and the hotel was wonderful. We stayed in Nayara Suite #4 and had a beautiful view of the volcano from our bed. We got in after dark, so didn't even realize it was there until we woke up.

We were met with a glass of fruit juice and taken to our room, which was a short 2-3 min walk from the lobby, restaurant and pool. Our room had a plate of fruit and bottle of champagne chilling for us, and the towel art was extraordinary.

The room was very large, and the bathroom huge. We enjoyed the outdoor shower and outdoor spa tub- both were very secluded with lush rainforest vegetation to ensure complete privacy.

The pool area was fantastic- we especially enjoyed the covered circle lounger for 2 by the pool. There is a swim up bar, and built in seats and tables all around. The pool is definitely for lounging though- children would have a hard time finding lots of places to swim.

The bartender kept coming around with complimentary bottles of water and fruit popsicles. (They were so neat- just chunks of fruit frozen on a stick- I loved it).

The hotel was very friendly and eager to answer any questions we had about the area.

All in all, I truly enjoyed this trip. Normally, I would have rated this property 5 stars, but we stayed here just after staying at the Pacuare Lodge which blew our minds with its luxury, and we kept comparing the Nayara to it. (Which is not fair- I'm acknowledging that right now)

If you are going to Arenal, it is a wonderful place to stay.
