“Great views”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

I loved the views and the grounds. The rooms and bathrooms very fantastic. Great flora and fauna on the premises. The cows were an added bonus! Golf carts were the transporters around the resort. It's a small and hilly area, so the golf carts were handy.
The negatives to me were... Smell of fuel was pretty constant with the comings and goings of the golf carts. The swimming pool, although beautiful, had little seating around it ( six of us took up a lot of the loungers). The swim-up bar was great but expensive. The water heater and toilet broke in the kids room, got it fixed but a little frustrating. They were extremely short staffed and we had a couple of telephone hang- ups by the staff due to the language barrier. The breakfasts were good. The kids went down after us and they came back saying the hot food was gone. They had replenished it by the time I went down with them. The coffee was slow to get refills had to ask several times. More staffing would have been a good thing for the tourist season. A stand out all star for their hotel was Alfredo. He should be the manager of the hotel. He is a communicator and tries to help the patrons. Having to be called back to the hotel after working all day to stay the night because no one could speak English to help the hotel guests says a lot about his work ethic and personality. Thanks!

It's a beautiful resort. Each room feels secluded and separate. Our group of adults and children had three rooms reserved. One of the a/c units malfunctioned and the hotel was fully booked. My parents spent the night in the room with the windows open, which eventually cooled off to a relatively comfortable level. The a/c was fixed the next morning and the hotel provided wine as compensation. The staff was helpful and accommodating. The hotel provides complimentary transportation to downtown Arenal at certain times per day. If you need transportation outside the scheduled times, it cost $10 flat fee. We enjoyed our stay!

We stayed at the Mountain Paradise Hotel in mid December with our 2 young boys. We initially reserved a Junior Suite, but when we arrived at our room, the AC unit was malfunctioning. A maintenance worker tried to fix it, to no avail. The front desk moved us to a Master Suite, which was great---complete with 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchenette and a small pool in front of the unit. The master bed was a king and very comfy, the kids' room had 2 single beds..... As the title of this review says, when the clouds clear, our unit had an awesome view of the Arenal Volcano..... Unfortunately (contrary to the nearby town's name), it was more cloudy and rainy than sunny during our 3 day stay.....

The included breakfast was good---not the best ever, but not bad like some previous reviews have said. On Saturdays, they put out a very nice breakfast buffet, and during the rest of the week, you have to order through the waitstaff. I would think they'd do the buffet on Sundays, but i digress.....

The pool area/wet bar were very serviceable. My only real complaint was the pool water was too warm, it was almost as warm as a regular hot tub---better, IMO, to have the pool water a little cooler and have a separate hot tub.

The grounds were well taken care-of---not too manicured, but nice enough nonetheless.

I would have rated this resort a 5, but there were a few issues. It seems like this resort has some maintenance issues----there were many things that were in various stages of disrepair.... Starting with the broken air conditioner (i'm glad for this one as it resulted in a very excellent upgrade!), but there were other things such as the AC units in our Master Suite either ran too much and made the rooms too cold, or they didn't cool enough.... There were light bulbs missing and burned out in the bathrooms and master bedroom, the toilet was broken in the kids bathroom, loose towel racks, the whirlpool didn't work in our bathroom and so on. And speaking of lights, i know the resorts all wanna be Green and Eco, but one of my pet peeves is using the wrong lighting. I was very critical of another resort in Ontario, Canada because of this---if you're going to use CF lighting, use WARM COLORED LIGHT BULBS!!!!!! They installed these harsh, bright, white CF lights in this totally cool-looking, rustic suite, and it just ruined the feel of it, at least for me.... Also, while the kitchenette was great for our family needs, they furnished it half-heartedly.... It had a microwave, mini fridge, ample cabinetry, paper towels, sink and with plenty of wine and drinking glasses.... But where were the food plates and silverware?????? Cabinets with nothing in them? Why? Also, the suite could have used a coupla ceiling fans as it's located in a damp, humid environment---nothing dries well in the room.

In conclusion, we really liked the Mountain Paradise Hotel..... If the management would get their act together and address these issues, it would be a truly awesome resort.

PS-i've included photos of the Junior Suite in this review. Please read captions so you know what you're looking at!

Room Tip: If you budget allows, i recommend getting the Master Suite if you're traveling with family. Bri...

We stayed at the Mountain Paradise Hotel for 3 nights. We landed in San Jose Airport, and had a driver who drove us from the airport straight to the hotel. It takes approximately 4 hours to reach the hotel, and the drive goes through a very hilly, curvy, mountainous region.

The staff the front desk were pleasant, and gave us 4 vouchers for 4 welcome fruit punch drinks at the bar near the swimming pool - for 4 in our party. That was a nice touch. Our luggage was transferred from the front desk to the cottage. The room itself is very unique - the entire architecture appears to be in Mediterranean style, the roof has wooden planks, and the walls have some type of stucco finish.

The first night that we arrived, we eat the restaurant on the premises. As is the case with hotels in this range, the prices were quite high, and the gratuity/tip of 23% was added automatically to our check. The food was fine, we had palm rice as the main entree since we were all vegetarians.

Breakfast included fruit juice, breads, cut up fruit (pineapple, watermelon), pancakes, cereal, rice and beans, eggs, and a meat. The restaurant has a very nice environment surrounded by trees and some birds. It is interesting for us to note that most of the music played in the evening and in the morning at this restaurant is American music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. We guessed that music must have been chosen very carefully to cater to the age group of American families that come to this hotel.

In the mornings, the walk from the cottage to the restaurant or to the reception was lovely. The entire area is landscaped with a phenomenal variety of tropical plants such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, and other colorful plants. You could just spend time walking around and looking at each plant or tree.

Overall, we loved our stay at this hotel. One thing you do need to know is that unlike most other hotels in this area, this hotel resides much farther from La Fortuna and other hotels, and it is a bit remote from all other hotels and the town. Therefore, if you book a tour, most likely your pickup will be at 7 am because the tour bus will first pick you up first, and then go to a series of other hotels to pick up others.

After finishing a tour, we would ask the tour guide to just drop us off in La Fortuna. We would eat dinner, and then take a taxi back to the hotel for $10. We found this to be a better way of saving time.

My friend and I traveled to Costa Rica in April on 2013. We chose the mountain paradise because of it's location and ratings on trip advisor. We couldn't have been happier! The minute we arrived the staff was wonderful. They placed our luggage on a golf cart and drove us to our room. This is like no other hotel I have stayed in. Each room is like a little cottage. Beautiful french doors opened to a a beautiful lanai, where there were two beautiful leather hand crafted rocking chairs to sit in while enjoying the fabulous view of the Arenal Volcano. Our trip included breakfast and it was delicious. There were many items to choose from with fresh fruit and juices and amazing costa rican coffee! The staff offered suggestions for things to do and were always smiling and pleasant I would Definitely return to Mountain Paradise!

Stay here for 4 nights as a base to explore the Arenal area and beyond. Very nice hotel, exactly as described in previous reviews. Set on a steep incline, the staff were very helpful in taking luggage up and down in their golf carts. Main restaurant was good, breakfast buffet style. Pool small, very never that busy, so quite relaxing. Set in a good location, 10min drive to La Fortuna town where there are some nice restaurants or a USD 10 taxi. 10 min also away from the main entrance to the volcano.
Only negative point, was that on our first night the hot water in the showers (normal and waterfall shower in the bathroom) was not working; called reception who said they would send someone out. 10 mins later, called again as no one turned up and reception said that the "pilot" was restarting and we would only have to wait 10 more minutes. 35 mins after the first call, we gave up and had to go down to reception before they eventually sent someone out to fix it.

I loved everything about this place. Doing research before the trip, it seemed almost too good to be true. When my boyfriend and I got there, we were completely blown away. It is exactly as shown in the pictures, only more beautiful and serene. Each room is in its own private building which you can reach by a small, well lit path. We spent the first night getting delicious Tortilla soup in the hotel restaurant, and drinking wine while sitting in the private tub on our back porch.
In the morning, after a delicious breakfast at the hotel buffet (which offers a little bit of everything) the hotel staff helped us figure out the best ways to get to all of the attractions we wanted to see and even called a cab to help us get there.
There was nothing better than coming home from a long day of hiking and taking a LONG and relaxing soak in the waterfall shower, and then going out for a few drinks at the pool. While sitting at the pool bar, you have a perfect view of the Arenal Volcano.
This was the first stop on our 2 week long vacation in Costa Rica , but I would have been perfectly happy staying at Mountain Paradise the entire time. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Room Tip: If you want a volcano view room, be sure to request one. With that said, there are many low clouds t...
