We stayed at the Mountain Paradise Hotel for 3 nights. We landed in San Jose Airport, and had a driver who drove us from the airport straight to the hotel. It takes approximately 4 hours to reach the hotel, and the drive goes through a very hilly, curvy, mountainous region.
The staff the front desk were pleasant, and gave us 4 vouchers for 4 welcome fruit punch drinks at the bar near the swimming pool - for 4 in our party. That was a nice touch. Our luggage was transferred from the front desk to the cottage. The room itself is very unique - the entire architecture appears to be in Mediterranean style, the roof has wooden planks, and the walls have some type of stucco finish.
The first night that we arrived, we eat the restaurant on the premises. As is the case with hotels in this range, the prices were quite high, and the gratuity/tip of 23% was added automatically to our check. The food was fine, we had palm rice as the main entree since we were all vegetarians.
Breakfast included fruit juice, breads, cut up fruit (pineapple, watermelon), pancakes, cereal, rice and beans, eggs, and a meat. The restaurant has a very nice environment surrounded by trees and some birds. It is interesting for us to note that most of the music played in the evening and in the morning at this restaurant is American music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. We guessed that music must have been chosen very carefully to cater to the age group of American families that come to this hotel.
In the mornings, the walk from the cottage to the restaurant or to the reception was lovely. The entire area is landscaped with a phenomenal variety of tropical plants such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, and other colorful plants. You could just spend time walking around and looking at each plant or tree.
Overall, we loved our stay at this hotel. One thing you do need to know is that unlike most other hotels in this area, this hotel resides much farther from La Fortuna and other hotels, and it is a bit remote from all other hotels and the town. Therefore, if you book a tour, most likely your pickup will be at 7 am because the tour bus will first pick you up first, and then go to a series of other hotels to pick up others.
After finishing a tour, we would ask the tour guide to just drop us off in La Fortuna. We would eat dinner, and then take a taxi back to the hotel for $10. We found this to be a better way of saving time.
