“Private Cabin with a View!”
Reviewed January 27, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Leaves and Lizards for 3 nights during our Honeymoon in Costa Rica. We loved every minute of our stay and would highly recommend staying there.
The owners are Steve and Debbie. They were very friendly and helpful. The cabin was very spacious and very clean. However, you may not spend much time in the cabin because the private porch is awesome. Perfect view of the Arenal!
It would probably be best that you rent a car while you are staying at Leaves and Lizards. We did and it worked out great.
We are very happy that we stayed there and it proved to be one of the highlights of our Honeymoon.

  • Liked — The view of the volcano, the owners, the cabin.
  • Disliked — Too far from New Orleans for weekend trips!

Leaves and Lizards totally exceeded our expectations! We booked the trip largely on the Trip Advisor recommendations, and we didn't know what to expect. We arrived at night (not recommended, as Debbie mentioned), and we were a little concerned about how far we were from things in Fortuna. However, all those concerns fell away once we awoke to hummingbirds and toucans flying above our very clean and modern cabin in the morning. The views from the porch were great, especially from the hammock. The food was exceptional, and the breakfasts kept you going all day. The best part was that all of the food was created from scratch -- the vegetables and fruit were fresh, and the eggs came right from the source on the farm. Great views, great food, and super nice hosts. If you like horses, be sure not to miss the fabulous ride to the waterfall - by far the best tour I've ever taken - our guides were very knowledgeable and helpful, plus the horses were super calm and fun to ride. Don't miss it!

Steve and Debbie are two of the most hospitable, helpful and knowledgeable hosts anyone could ever wish for. From the moment we were greeted checking in, to the bevy of information they offered us, the incredible cabin, and food, we were not disappointed. The guide they arranged for us for our tours, Enrique, was superb. He took us to places in the rainforest and gave us a wealth of information not only on the forest itself, but also on the numerous inhabitants we were able to see in their natural environment. He hiked us to the closest point to Arenal, where we were fortunate enough after waiting out the rain, to be able to see the magnificent lava flow! A once in a lifetime experience. The wildlife we also viewed from the porch on our cabin was also breathtaking. We will definately be returning to their nature paradise! Lennon and Polly Holmen, Boston, MA

During our 10 day honeymoon in Costa Rica, Leaves and Lizards was both my husband's and my favorite place to stay on the trip. Leaves and Lizards is just wonderful- from the wonderful guided tours on horseback, the intimate cabin we stayed in, all the friendly animals and people, and the amazing view of the volcanoe and the sunset from our porch each night, I'm so glad that we chose to stay here. The one thing that was disappointing had nothing to do with Leaves and Lizards, but rather the cloudy weather that kept us from seeing the lava.
Speaking of lava, for those that are intent on seeing lava from your room, this location is currently not on the side of the lava flow, however, I still think it is the better place to stay. The volcanoe peak much more than not has a cloud on it, prohibiting a view of the lava, but, because of the direction the cabin is facing, you get a full view of the volcanoe itself as well as the sunsets, which are just amazing... I'd bank on the sunsets, not the lava. (:
One more quick note, definately rent a 4x4 if you stay here! It's part of the fun.

  • Liked — I loved the view and that it wasn't in a typically touristly location.

Our stay at Leaves & Lizards was great. Steve and Debbie were the consummate hosts, friendly without being pushy. They shared their ideas on what would make our stay a memorable one; a highlight was going on a wildlife expedition with a guide, Giovanni (hope I got that right!). Overall our visit to L&L was well worth the bumpy ride!

Leaves and Lizards provided entertainment and relaxation at the same time. We stayed 3 nights and wished we could stay longer. While we were there we went zip lining at the Mundo Adventuro, the place Steve and Deb recommended. The staff makes the adventure a lot of fun. We also wanted to see the plants and animals of Costa Rica. Be sure to hire Enrique for the day for only $130. He took us to 2 national parks where we saw 2 kinds of monkeys, a sloth and a coati along with insects as well. We saw many different birds and plants including a rubber tree. He also took us to see the volcano at dusk (must do). When our day ended, 10 hours later, we were well educated and exhausted. Enrique is a gem, a definite must.

Be sure to start and end your days on the deck outside your room. There is a million stars out a night along with the animals sounds that you won't want to miss. In the morning there are hummingbirds, toucans and parrots all around you. The posted pictures are just what it looks like.

Steve and Deb are marvelous hosts. They know how to find the balance between being helpful and allowing you to have your space. The Polleria in the town of Monterey isn't your best bet for dinner though. Try the other restaurant across the street and down a ways toward the entrance into town. You must speak a little spanish though. Be sure to have a "typical plate" of your choice.

We planned our trip directly with Debbie after reading the posts here. And I have to say they did not disappoint! We had the most excellent time and family trip! I had given Debbie a list of the activities that we wanted to do and she was able to put it all together for us-all we had to do was show up! It was incredible to have our own guide, Enrique, to see the volcano and to the private waterfall! He was so knowledgable and answered any questions that we had and took wonderful pictures for us as well. Thank you so much for the wonderful memories!
