My wife, brother, and me went on a 8 day trip to Costa Rica. We stayed at Hotel el Silencio for 4 of the days. We had a great time at the Hotel. All the staff members were helpful, smiling, and gave good recommendations for places to eat and activities to do, and in the process saved us a ton of money.
One thing I didnt like was that we were interested in seeing the jungle cats in the area and wanted to know if there was a zoo around - the front desk guy acted like nothing like that even existed. Later on we found out that The Springs Resort had their own small zoo with different cats from the area. We told the same guy and he suddenly knew all about it.
Also, when asking about the places with hot springs they never mentioned the springs resort but when I asked other people in the area and looked it up myself we decided to go there and really thought it was amazing at a great price. (40 dollars for 2 days, used their restaurants/pool tables/etc, and had a great time)

Positives:
- clean, beautiful cabins
- nice view of the volcano
- great location close to the city (but not in it), and closer to the volcano trails than other places.
- saw toucans there frequently
-wifi in our rooms

Negatives:
- Large hotel next to it overshadows the place and causes it to lose some of its beauty
- NO PHONES IN ROOMS. IF YOU WANT TO TALK TO THE RECEPTIONIST YOU HAVE TO GO THERE.
- The breakfast orange juice and fruits were good. The remainder of the 5 choices we had were mediocre but included in our stay there.
- Hot spring looked a little dirty - never ended up going there.

We felt really good about selecting Hotel El Silencio del Campo for our stay near Arenal

The good:
-The hotspring in the back (free!) is an oasis, and you could easily spend your entire time soaking in the spa.
-The price!
-Nice private cabinas
-Decent hearty breakfasts, not exactly gourmet, but hot fresh corn tortillas were wonderful
-Very nice and accomodating staff, willing to help with tour reservations

The bad - cannot be helped
-Loud disco next door, provided thumping bass at 1 AM and later
-Strange, large, ugly hotel next door towering over cabinas

Best kept secret in Costa Rica!!!

Perfect small hideout with excellent accommodations and staff. Each room is a private cottage. Their huge private hot springs with a waterfall has an outside bar just yards away - simply a jewel! Outdoor restaurant offered great view of the volcano from the La Fortuna area and there were many exotic birds especially in the morning during breakfast.

Doing our trip again, we would just stay here and build our travel plans around it. We had 2 kids, 8 & 12, and they loved it, too.

We only stayed at El Silencio del Campo for one night - we wished we would have stayed for more. El Silencio was very affordable with all the luxuries of a higher end resort. We had one of the cabins near the front and, although you could hear some minimal road noise, the view of the volcano was fantastic. They had their own hot springs pool that was much more private than those at Baldi or Tabacon. This place is a gem - I can see why it's rated #1 on Trip Advisor!

Beautiful grounds and setting. The adults in our party enjoyed the hot spring at Hotel El Silencio MUCH more than the overpriced amusement park style (the kids enjoyed) at the quite noisy Baldi Hot Springs accross the street. The food at Hotel El Silencio was EXCELLENT and MUCH cheaper than Baldi Hot Springs.
