“Perfect for couples and families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

My husband and I just got back from an adventurous and romantic trip to Costa Rica. I was extremely pleased with my stay at Hotel El Silencio. It was a recommendation by the travel agent. We arrived and were greeted with a (nonalcoholic) cocktail which was delicious. Our room was ready right away. The hotel also offered a complementary mud mask facial which I got the first day since the rest of the trip was full of fun excursions. We found our private 'bungalow' to be nice, clean, plenty of room. Each morning I woke to plenty of birds chirping outside. I got up early every morning and walked around taking pictures. The hotel has beautiful landscaping. I was a bit nervous since we went during the 'rainy season' about bugs, mainly mosquitoes, but was pleasantly surprised that was not an issue here. My husband and I used the agua termales every night we stayed there. It was very relaxing at the end of the day. We took a day trip to Tabacon which is about 15 minutes away because all the review books rave about it. It was nice too with trails upon trails of hot springs, but the drink prices are pretty steep compared to this hotel. There is a pool bar at hotel el silencio to purchase beer, wine, cocktails, whatever you want really. All of the staff were very personable and remembered small requests. The complementary breakfast is very filling-- fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice, and a selection from a menu of about 5-6 items. We ate dinner there one night also and were happy with the food. This is not the hotel for a group of partiers. The grounds are very quiet. It is about a 10 minute or $8 taxi ride to La Fortuna where my husband and I ate a couple times for dinner there too (NeNe's is very good). I thought the price of this hotel was VERY reasonable for what they have. The volcano was never clearly viewed through the clouds but it did clear for us to see during our Arenal Volcano hike. Do not expect to see lava like the travel books say as the volcano has not been active since about 2010. Overall, I would definitely go back to Costa Rica and would stay at this hotel again!!

We booked our stay in El Silencio de Campo based on the high reviews in Tripadvisor, so we felt that we were well informed before our arrival...but how surprised we were!?!! This place literally took our breath away...the setting is absolutely amazing with the landscaped gardens throughout and the perfect views of the Arenal Volcano in the distance (none of the pictures on Tripadvisor or the hotels own website do the place justice). The resort is dotted with hot pools throughout and the experience was entirely relaxing for a couple on honeymoon...We could not have asked for more from our stay...the service was excellent and we were particularly impressed by Jose the bartender, who was super-friendly, made the best cocktails and was very helpful with tips on where to eat and what to see in the area.

Booked because of reviews, hot springs are terrific they must regulate the water temp, we got in at 7 am and it was not hot at all, but enjoyed the quietness. Wish they had coffee at the springs.the grounds are beautiful! We stayed 2 nights, our room was another story when we walked in there was dropping on the floor and dead bugs on the floor as well. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. Johnny came a plugged the whole in the ceiling where the bat was living, and used silicone as well, and swept up the floor, it was just yekky. We smelled the silicone all night.
I had the free facial (if you stay 2 nights), it was so nice, I booked one for my husband. And we got a couples massage, the spa is the most beautiful I have ever seen.
The dinner and breakfast were fine.
We hoped they might give up a little discount because of the bat thing, just thought it would be good will.
I'm a travel agent, not sure if I would send my clients there. But it's quant and quiet.

We did a tour of The big hot springs hotel, the springs were nice, but they let the public come in and it was crazy crowed in the off season. We would not stay there.

Dear Guest,:
Thanks very much for sharing your experience based on your stay at Hotel El Silencio del Campo. At our hotel we work hard for the goal of achieving our client's satisfaction. We apologize this time for not meeting our client's expectations.

What a shame you didn't inform us about all the issues throughout your stay as we would've taken immediate action.

One of our employees, from maintenance department, addressed on the spot as fast as he could to sweep up the floor and at the same time to give a solution in regards to the bat issue. Nevertheless, he agrees to say he had made a mistake and that he shouldn't have plugged the hole with silicone while you were staying in the villa. He should have used another temporary method that didn't affect the client.

We could've also given you another villa but the maintenance guy told us you were happy for having the inconveniences fixed and you were nice at him. It looked like you were satisfied with what he did.

You are right with the cleanliness of the villa as it hadn't been used by anyone for three days in a row but we have taken action in regards to that so it doesn't happen again.

As of the hot springs onsite, they are heated by the volcano but we have to pump the water out from the ground. This fact makes us turn on and off the pump to satisfy our customers' likes. We happily do this and very often check the temperature of the water.

The hot springs on the property are ONLY for guests and are NOT open to the public. If friends or relatives of the owners come visiting, both are children from families with eight sons and over 30 grandchildren, it's possible that a small group came in that day to share. I very much apologize if I made you feel bad during your visit. We will take your comments very seriously.

Hopefully this doesn't tarnish the image you got from the hotel. We will be honored if you give us another opportunity near in the future to serve you.

Sincerely,
Luis Diego Zúñiga Vega

Stayed at El Silencio del Campo for 3 days in April. We have stayed up the road at another familiar spot before but this trip they were asking $220 per night. We drove back down to El Silencio del Campo and took a shot. The receptionist was hands down the nicest young lady of the trip. She quoted myself and my friend $160 per night. My friend who lives in San Jose that I was travelling with somehow talked her down to $140x3. The rooms, Fantastic! The whole facility was Wonderful from the staff to the location. The battery in our vehicle went completely dead before departing. One of the maintenance workers took the battery out of his vehicle to get ours rolling! We will definitely be back in August!!

My fiance and I stayed in El Silencio del Campo from May 1-3, 2013 (i.e. 3 nights). The greeting at the hotel reception more than made up for the 3 hour drive from San Jose airport to the hotel. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and blend it wonderfully with the natural surroundings. The layout and design of the hotel is also in perfect harmony with the natural landscape (unlike some of the other hotels nearby which have used very misfitting urban-style architecture).

The rooms are very spacious, impeccably clean and equipped with all the amenities you would need. The housekeeping staff add a personal and creative touch everyday - one day, our towels were arranged to form a cute elephant with freshly plucked flowers for its eyes, another day we were surprised with candles placed all over our room.

The staff are always helpful and cheerful - nothing is too much of an ask. The food at the hotel was the best that we ate in La Fortuna.

We also used the hot springs and the spa at the hotel. The spa is tucked away in a corner of the hotel and is a tranquil spot surrounded by ponds, plants and ducks. We loved that the spa does not play music and allows the natural sounds of the water, the forest and wildlife to accompany your experience. The hot springs in the hotel were also wonderful - we loved that there are both big and small springs so couples can choose the smaller ones for intimacy whereas groups can choose the larger ones.

We highly recommend this hotel and would love to return!

Traveled as a couple and stayed for 3 nights. Wished it could have been more! As everyone says the grounds are beautiful and it's really nice having your own cabin. The springs are great, especially with a drink in hand. The bartender was very nice and made me a special drink that was tasty. The front office staff were always helpful and very friendly. The breakfast was pretty good. I had the toast one day and omelet another day. One morning we had a really early pick-up time for a tour so the staff arranged a fruit plate and some toast for us the night before. We had dinner there the first night and it was actually really good. We just had a typical cosado but the flavor was great. The view of the volcano was great. And the complimentary facial was a nice bonus too. I'd definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7. You could only hear road noise when you were outside.
