My husband and I just got back from an adventurous and romantic trip to Costa Rica. I was extremely pleased with my stay at Hotel El Silencio. It was a recommendation by the travel agent. We arrived and were greeted with a (nonalcoholic) cocktail which was delicious. Our room was ready right away. The hotel also offered a complementary mud mask facial which I got the first day since the rest of the trip was full of fun excursions. We found our private 'bungalow' to be nice, clean, plenty of room. Each morning I woke to plenty of birds chirping outside. I got up early every morning and walked around taking pictures. The hotel has beautiful landscaping. I was a bit nervous since we went during the 'rainy season' about bugs, mainly mosquitoes, but was pleasantly surprised that was not an issue here. My husband and I used the agua termales every night we stayed there. It was very relaxing at the end of the day. We took a day trip to Tabacon which is about 15 minutes away because all the review books rave about it. It was nice too with trails upon trails of hot springs, but the drink prices are pretty steep compared to this hotel. There is a pool bar at hotel el silencio to purchase beer, wine, cocktails, whatever you want really. All of the staff were very personable and remembered small requests. The complementary breakfast is very filling-- fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice, and a selection from a menu of about 5-6 items. We ate dinner there one night also and were happy with the food. This is not the hotel for a group of partiers. The grounds are very quiet. It is about a 10 minute or $8 taxi ride to La Fortuna where my husband and I ate a couple times for dinner there too (NeNe's is very good). I thought the price of this hotel was VERY reasonable for what they have. The volcano was never clearly viewed through the clouds but it did clear for us to see during our Arenal Volcano hike. Do not expect to see lava like the travel books say as the volcano has not been active since about 2010. Overall, I would definitely go back to Costa Rica and would stay at this hotel again!!
