Hotel Arenal Montechiari
Certificate of Excellence

This was a great hotel for exploring Arenal. We had a rental car, so I'm not sure how accessible it would be if you were relying on public transportation, but with a car it was great. Close to the center of Arenal and to the hot springs. It also had a pool, which was nice. It was pretty rainy the whole time we were in Arenal, but we still went in the pool once and it was very relaxing. The staff was really nice as well and made us feel very welcome.

Good location and friendly receptionist do not save this hotel.
Cabanas have paper thin walls and are located very close to each other so you can hear people snoring in another house. If all night rooster concert and heavy machinery constructing new houses next door won't cut it, the stench of wet wood will.
No restaurant - only good for breakfast.. Not recommended

A sweet little place.
It is out of the way, but only a short walk to town. The staff was amazing.
Most of them spoke at least some English.
My only complaint would be that a buss load of teenagers descended on the place my second night there making it near impossible to enjoy the surrounding gardens and pool. They were loud and obnoxious for the remainder of my stay. This is not the hotels fault, but it did impact my stay.

A very basic lodging but with an amazing view of the Volcano. It had all the necessities for myself and two friends. &beautiful pool to sit by and admire the Volcano etc.

Could have done with a working AC but it being rainy season, it wasnt 100% necessary. Still very hot though so High season would be impossible!

A 5min walk to the town(very doable).

Only real complaint is that due to low season, we were only people staying in the few bungalows and thus no porter was ever at the office. There were a few staff around however they only spoke spanish so they arent much help if you only speak English. (you dont really need their help though)

Xtra info for a must: ´Wave expeditions´ white water rafting.

My sister and I arrived in La Fortuna without a reservation over the New Yer holiday (I know, stupid!). The hotel we stopped at (Hotel San Bosco) had a lovely receptionist who made a few phone calls for us, and found us a room at Hotel El Sesteo for $40 a night! The owner/manager, Daisy, came to pick us up in her own car (mother-in-tow!) and took us the ~500 yards out of town to the hotel. Yes, it's a bit of a walk, but we enjoyed being a little off the beaten path. It was quiet and safe, with a security guard patrolling the grounds at night. The neighborhood is residential and looked like mostly families. We arrived at night, and my sister had a desperate knot in her neck that prevented her from moving and was extremely painful. Daisy (the owner) arranged for her to get a massage from Daisy's masseuse at 7PM that very same evening, then threw us back in her car and took us right to the place!

The next morning we woke in out private bungalow with little front porch to find that we looked out on a beautiful gardens and a pool. Granted, they are building 20 more bungalows, so there is construction noise that begins around 8AM, but we were up anyway. If you can get around the unpaved entry road (not bad, even in the rain!) and the construction, this place is spectacular. The walkway separating the two rows of completed bungalows points directly at Arenal and we were surrounded by pasture and horses. They are building a restaurant, and expect construction to be complete sometime this spring.

There was hot water but no internet or phone (standard for Costa Rica!), and we had a TV. There was AC in the room and bathroom was quite large, as was the room. The tile floors were nice and cool, but with the construction it would have been nice to have a little rung or floor mat to wipe your feet - we ended up leaving our shoes outside most of the time.

We absolutely loved it here. Outside of our room (one of the bungalows facing the gardens with no bungalow in front - you want one of those!) was a banana tree, and people left kiwis so the birds would perch right outside our door and eat the fruit. "Towel art" is popular here, and we came back to the room to find an elephant with flowers for eyes, a "t-shirt" with flowers for buttons, and two swans with flowers as well. The staff was amazing (helped us get a reservation in our next city, Montezuma) and set up our canyoneering excursion for us.

You MUST go canyoneering in La Fortuna - go with Desafio - they are amazing! Super safe and spectacular 200-foot descends through a jungle canyon - just gorgeous!

I can't recommend this hotel highly enough - for $40 a night it is the best value in La Fortuna!
