The owner of this hostel, Herman was a super friendly Tico. He helped us plan the guides that we wanted to do during our stay in Arenal. He went as much as calling up all the booking companies to confirm our reservation for a canopy tour. He also saved us 10$ because we were able to get a student discount with him. He also paid for our taxi into town for dinner the first night of our stay. Herman also told us about a hot spot in La Fortuna that had hot springs without an admission fee. Be sure to ask him about that. Both me and my friend were very grateful for the service he provided us with. The rate also included breakfast. Herman and his wife actually cooked the breakfast for us. Suffice to say, the portions were large and Herman made sure to ask us how we liked our eggs :). Herman also owns cattle at a nearby farm so the milk was fresh, pasteurized and delicious. Herman also puts out fruit in his garden which attracts many tropical birds such as the beautiful blue gray tananger. You are able to listen to beautiful birds while being served a great big breakfast. Dont hesitate on this place. I would definitely go back to this family fun place as it was well worth the money we paid. But also keep in mind me and my friend are young students that were backpacking. So we werent expecting the Belagio. In any case, if you are looking for the best bang out of your buck definitely go with Jardines Arenal.

If you don't mind the noice of a heavy traffic road nearby this hotel is value for money. The kind staff is very willing to help you with your decissions about what to do in the area. The breakfast is good, everything you need to get started. What was less pleasant was the fact that we had to pay cash as our MC credit card was refused (the only place during our 3 weeks stay in Costa Rica). The hotel is well situated (2km outside from La Fortuna) alltough you will need a cab or car to get to La Fortuna itself.

Some of the rooms have a unforgateble view to the Arenal vulcano. Hotel is some km out of town but there are buses and friendly owner will give you a lift whenever he is going to town. He knows everything about Arenal and what to do and can find you the cheapest tours of all kind. Internet is awailable with their computer.

I stayed at this Lodge with my boyfriend for a couple days while in CR, and it was the best days of the whole trip! The owner, Hernan, provides detailed and friendly service and his friend Inti runs a tour company so he took us to all the sites around La Fortuna (waterfall, hot springs, volcano, hanging bridges) as well as took us to the best places for traditional casados. I highly recommend staying at this place. It is out of the city, very cute rooms, hot water (that was a problem in some places we stayed), great people, and beautiful views.

My three teenage grandchildren and I stayed a couple of nights at Hernan Blancos hotel. Located about a mile from town it is on the highway but the noise wasnt a distraction for sleeping. The breakfasts were superb with fresh fruit, great coffee and choices of cercal or eggs with sausage and toast. We used two rooms and both were clean and very functional, and quite spacious. Everything worked and was well maintained, including the beautiful grounds. The view of the Volcano is uninterrupted. the owner is very knowledgable and gracious and speaks excellent english.

This property looks good when you arrive. It has a pretty seating area with rocking chairs. However, the rooms tell a different story. Our room was very dated and worn and in desperate need of refurbishing (it had A/C but no TV). It also smelled very damp and we could not seem to get rid of the smell. Maybe the A/C was leaking? This could all have been overlooked except that the bedding was really foul. One of the beds had massive stains on the sheets and both beds had very worn out sheets and cover. Even if they spend no other money on the place, the owners really need to buy new bedding.

Most importantly, it will not cost you less than 2000 colones (approx $4) to get a taxi into town and there is nowhere to eat nearby so this adds on $16 to the cost of your room each day assuming you travel into town for lunch and dinner.

Note that not all rooms will receive wifi so you may need to sit in the lobby area to use it. The lobby area does not have A/C so it can get pretty hot!

I wouldn't write this place off entirely but they just need to spend some money and I would suggest you need a car rental to stay there.

We stayed just one night here but our host was incredibly helpful. He gave free advice and a free lift into town with a great recommendation for a local quality sodas for lunch. The place is spotlessly clean and the gardens attract squirrels and birds in the morning. Our host also provided breakfast to us at 6 am so that we could catch the bus to Quesada at 630 from outside the gate. There was also a fantastic view of the volcano in the morning.
