We recently stayed at the resort - its was very nice. The rooms were clean, but a little small. We had great views of the Volcano almost each dday - perhaps we were lucky. The hotel is NOT facing the side of the volcano were you can see lava - those hotels are around the far side - another 15 minutes drive and make them a bit far from La Fortuna, but close to many of the activities (volcano hikes, zip lines, butterlies, etc.) The grounds were beautiful and it was a good location for the activities in the area and easy access to La Fortuna. Given that everywhere in the area requires a taxi, I would look at renting a car for the stay in this area (taxi's are $7 each way to town, to the hot springs, etc., so renting in La Fortuna might be a good option).

We did the Sky Trek / Sky Tram zip lines - seems very safe and well run - we loved it! But, note that these are very high (some at 600 plus feet up and over 2000 feet long) and fast - not at the tree top level so you will not see wildlife from them - still a great experience and even our kids loved it.

We did run out of hot water for showers 1 -2 times and the pool was a bit cold (fine for mid day, but not late afternoon, and we were out doing things mid day). The concierge was exceptionally good. The restaurant on the grounds is good - highly recommend the seafood soup. The food at Volcano Lodge - just down the dirt road to the resort - was great and extremely well priced.

Nice, large property, with separate duplexes spread out over a large area. Restaurant open air with good food at reasonable prices was very nice. Hotel told us they have a "Jacuzzi" but they have no hot tub or Jacuzzi. Very nice pool area with swim up bar, though water too cold and no one was in pool. Lobby and staff are pleasant and helpful. We never saw Arenal volcano due to constant cloud cover.

The staff was helpful and the hotel had very nice views of the Volcano. However, the views were of the side without much active lava flow, but we did get to see a clear puff of smoke and ash for a few minutes. Volcano was in the clouds for most of our visit. The pool was pleasant and the room was clean and had a refridgerator, good cable TV and a fancy shower.
One problem was that the hotel was isolated and a taxi to the Hanging Bridges right at the lake cost $18 to (meter started in La Fortuna) and $16 return. The desk called around and could not find a cheaper rate.
Also, being isolated, one is tempted to use the restaurant and we were charged over $30 for two of the cheaper meals on the menu including the $3 charge for water (not asked for) and the 23 % tax.
A nice place to stay if you have a car.

We were at the Arenal Springs as part of a Caravan Tour, and it was one of the two best hotels of the tour. The rooms are spacious, and the rock wall covered with plants in the shower was unique. We had a great view of the volcano and would have been well placed for viewing the lava flow, but it was cloudy most of the time we were there.

The restaurant was OK--as some other guests said, it was fairly uniform both nights we were there. Breakfast was good--the omelets made to order were outstanding!

We appreciated the free Internet access in the lobby.

The gardens are beautiful, and we saw lots of birds (toucans!!) and beautiful flowers.

The hotel is a short taxi ride from La Fortuna, where there are lots of nice gift shops. It is also close to hot springs which are also beautiful.

Highly recommended!

We stayed at Arenal Springs Resort as part of a 10-day tour through Caravan Tours. While perfectly fine, it did not match up to the exotic character of our Tortuguera jungle lodge or our Pacific all-inclusive resort. But - it was fine.

The resort is located between Tabacon Hot Springs and the village of La Fortuana. When we turned off the main road onto a dirt road into the country, I thought we were in for "rustic," but the resort is quite modern. It’s cut right out of pasture and is still surrounded by fields with cows and horses.

The 26 cabins are actually duplexes, with two rooms each. Every room has a covered patio facing the volcano, complete with two rocking chairs. The rooms are not well soundproofed and we could hear the couple in the next room – not enough to bother us, but enough to make us wonder if we might be bothering them!

As mentioned in a previous review, inserting your room key in a slot as you enter the room turns on the electricity. I wish I had this at home - very green! The bay window in each room is fixed, but there are two other large windows that slide open. These windows do not have screens which was not a problem for us since there weren't any bugs, but it didn't feel real safe to sleep that way at night so we closed them and turned on the A/C.

The rooms are basic but clean and very serviceable. The garden shower is a nice touch - and wait 'til you see what they do with your towels. ;-)

Many in our group praised the landscaping and the resort did do a good job with planting lots of interesting plants and labeling them, but I found it rather uninspiring. I prefer paths through tropical vegetation and the landscaping here was much more open.

It was too cool to use the pool but it looked fine and there was a swim-up bar. I think it is designed so you can lay in the pool or jacuzzi and see the volcano at night.

Our tour group ate at the restaurant for breakfast and 2 dinners - typical yummy Tico fare , very well prepared considering it was all buffet. The restaurant is airy with a good view of the volcano.

Ah yes, the volcano. All the views in the resort focus on the it. Unfortunately, the most we ever saw of Arenal was the bottom third as it was cloudy the entire two days of our stay. Bummer.

We saw lots of birds on site and one of our group members had toucans on her patio!

We took two great side trips arranged by Caravans - a wildlife-viewing boat trip into the Cano Negro Wildlife Preserve and a visit to the much nearer Baldi Hot Springs. We saw lots of animals – especially monkeys and birds - on the river tour and had a great guide. The hot springs were almost empty when we got there in the late afternoon. We were the only people in several of the pools. Magical!

If you go to the resort website, it lists a variety of tours including rafting, caving, hiking, canopy tours, and horseback riding – plus the ones we did – all within a short distance. It states that the tour operators will pick you up at the resort.

We also toured La Fortuna but it's really pretty much a tourist town and did nothing for me.

If I were to go back to Arenal, I'd probably stay at a more rugged place with more of a nature feel to it, closer to hiking trails and the volcano. But this resort is nice, clean and comfortable – and a good deal.

We were wonderfully surprised after traveling from San Jose over circuitous, although paved, mountain roads; through La Fortuna town; down an unpaved, rutted 1/2 mi. of country lane to see a lush little paradise that is the Arenal Springs Resort. The public areas are all open air, as is common in Costa Rica, and the lobby opens directly out toward the volcano for a magnificent view as one is registering.
As we drove up we were greeted by employees eager to help us. Most of the staff speaks English, so communication was never a problem. I can't say enough good things about the them. They were friendly and helpful and attentive; they made us feel very welcome.
The restaurant had a wide variety of dishes and the meals we had there over four days were all quite acceptable. A "tipical" Costa Rican breakfast buffet was included with the price of the room. The coffee was to die for.
The rooms were in duplex villas and were very clean and comfortable, although spartan by American standards. Each was equipped with a refrigerator and safe. The grounds around each cabin and the public areas held a variety of colorful, exotic plants. All rooms have a view of the volcano, but the view from the upper floor of the new two story building was breathtaking.
The pool area was lovely, with a man-made waterfall cascading into the pool. There is a swim up bar where you can order not only drinks, but food as well.
Our little group was sorry to leave Arenal to continue our travels to Monteverde. I'm sure the stories about Costa Rica having the worst roads in the world came from the ride to Monteverde. But that's another story.

There are many hotels around the Arenal Volcano and our travel agent booked us into the Arenal Springs Resort. It was certainly servicable. We were two couples and had an attached bungalow that looked out onto the volcano. The room was fine, nothing fancy but nothing missing either, and clean. The restaurant was also fine, not great. The pool was not heated so a bit cool and so just about nobody used the swim up bar but sat on the dry land side when ordering a drink. There are guards at night, which is a little surprising, but seems the norm in Costa Rica, though we had no sense of danger, even when we went into town, La Fortuna, which is about a ten minute, $6 cab ride away. The Volcano Lodge is about a ten minute walk down a bumpy road and we had dinner there one night, which was OK as it's a little fancier.

The best part of the resort was the staff, but the truth is, we found the people in Costa Rica so friendly that we could say that about almost everyone we met. But Celine, who is the tour operator during the week, was especially nice. We had a foul up with our ride to the next stop, caused by a fax not being delivered to our room with the change in times. Celine took it upon himself to give us a tour of the place, and there are gardens that were worth seeing and we'd missed. And he helped us set up an ATV tour, so instead of losing half a day, we filled it with another adventure.

We were on our way to Monteverde and so were going by car, boat and then car again. For those who don't know this, getting a boat ride across Arenal Lake saves you a lot of time. It's also a very nice trip.
