Arenal Springs Resort in Arenal, Costa Rica was a terrific hotel and the best hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica. The rooms were nice and clean with good views of the volcano. The landscaping was beautiful. I also liked that the hotel is set back away from the main road, making it quiet and peaceful. The staff were very welcoming and happy to help us plan our outings and activities. I would gladly stay there again. La Fortuna Waterfall was beautiful. Baldi Termae hot springs were nice but expensive and geared to the younger party crowd (loud music, lots of bars, etc.)

We booked our stay on very short notice while in Costa Rica.

The complex is very unique, private and about 1-km off the main road. It consists of a few dozen two-unit cabins on separate lots, similar to a small subvision. The reception area and restaurant are at the entry point, and you can walk, drive, or ride a golf cart to your unit.

The cabins look quite spacious from the road, but in reality they are smaller than most hotel rooms. They are new and modern, but there is no sitting area (not even a single chair or couch). No other complaints, except for the weather.

The reception staff, bell captain, concierge, and restaurant staff were all very professional, friendly and helpful. All spoke very decent English. Food served was good and reasonably priced. The included breakfast was American-style and very good. We ordered room service one night due to the weather, and the burgers were just great. They were delivered by car.

Shopping and restaurants are available in La Fortuna, about a $6 cab ride each way. The many tours and Interbus pickup right at the resort.

It was too rainy and cloudy to view the Arenal Volcano, and the lava flows are on the opposite side, away from Arenal Springs.

In summary, it was quiet, relaxing, and a decent value.

The grounds are well kept and beautiful with a wide variety of plants and flowers that make a natural habitat for birds, frogs etc. Just walking around the grounds we saw Toucans, Hawks, Tannagers, Hummingbirds and many other beautiful native birds. Even if you're not a birder (my wife is but I'm just a casual observer) bring your binoculars. Just sitting in the restaurant or walking to your room you can look out and see interesting birds in the surrounding trees and bushes.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and courteous. Make sure to talk to Selim or Eduard about what tours or activities you'd like to do - they won't steer you wrong. As a matter of fact, Selim put together a special river trip to his native Nicaragua on his day off that he offered to us and 3 other couples. He took us by van and then pontoon boat to San Carlos. We saw crocodiles, monkeys, lizards and tons of birds along the river. What an unexpected treat!!
The rooms were spacious and clean. The large showers have plants growing up one wall so you feel a little like you're showering in the forest - a nice touch! Some other reviewer mentioned bugs but we didn't have any problems at all. That's not to say you won't see the occasional ant but, for goodness sakes, you're in the rainforest!! Rainforests have bugs and rain!! Speaking of rain, it did rain while we were there but the rain came and went and never lasted for a very long time.
We did not, however, see the volcano. The clouds never lifted enough but that's something nobody can control and the rest of our activities (hanging bridges tour, hike to La Fortuna waterfall, night hike etc.) were still well worth it.
The only "knock" on this resort is the restaurant. The food was ok but the menu was very limited and unimaginative - breakfast was fine but other meals offered only a few salads, some pasta a couple of steaks and some Sea Bass - that's about it. However, I'd encourage anyone to use this as an opportunity to sample the local cousine in La Fortuna or, if you'd like a more varied, upscale (and more expensive) menu try the restaurant at the Volcano Lodge hotel just down the road. That said, the hotel restaurant will accommodate you - as an example, one day at lunch I was just in the mood for a sandwich or a cheeseburger (neither is on the menu) and asked our waiter if this could be done? Sure enough, they made me a cheeseburger that was very good!

I chose this hotel based on the selling point on its website that touted the fact all their rooms were volcano-facing. To be honest though, don't buy into that marketing tack - in Arenal, it's the weather and cloud cover that determines whether or not you see the volcano, not the position of your hotel room. At first glance, the room seemed clean but then we found some dead lice in the bed sheets. Shower is pretty and it feels like you're showering in nature because it's surrounded by plants, a skylight, and not to mention big black ants crawling all around the tile edges. I would not stay here again - would recommend El Silencio del Campo. Also, do NOT go to Baldi Hot Springs. It's more of an American tourist-infested water park than natural thermal hot springs. It was $21 just to get in, then their food is overpriced, and then on top of that they charge $10 for a towel. What?!!
