“Pleasant Surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2011

We arrived in the Arenal area w/o reservations. Stopped at another more posh place, "Montana" something, just north of La Fortuna that had no vacancies. An employee made a call and told us he had a friend who had a place. Ignoring all my better instincts, we let him in the car and he directed us to Coloso Arenal where he met his friends and went on his way. An extremely nice young man, who's name unfortunately escapes me. Coloso Arenal may be the cleanest motel I've ever stayed in. (and I'm 62 and traveled in my job!) It was truely spotless. The owner is extremely accomodating and friendly. Breakfast, which is included, featured cooked to order eggs, toast, fresh fruit etc. Very nice meal in a very nice setting. You can't beat this place, especially for the price. My only suggestion would be to replace the dark lamp shades, that make the rooms dark. We arrived late after a long day and were ready to crash, so it was no big deal, but if you wanted to read it would be a challenge.

We stayed here because it was the only place available and were very surprised when we met Humberto in the front office. He was most helpful and genuinely nice. He showed us to our room and had some great suggestions to eat. We tried Las Nene's which was pretty good.

The hotel offers a buffet breakfest which is normal and the rooms were well-appointed and clean. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the volcano but apparently there is a direct view of it from the hotel.

Would definitely stay here again.

I normally do a lot of research when it comes to hotels, but as my recent trip to Costa Rica was a last-minute one, I decided to try something different; I'm so glad I did! We literally stumbled onto this hotel on our way into La Fortuna from the airport. From what I could see, it was the first hotel actually within the city limits. From a distance, it looked cozy, so I decided to check it out. Wow! The rooms are beautifully furnished, wood from floor to ceiling, including the furniture, with a gorgeous tile layout on the floor. The grounds were beautifully kept, and included an open air "ranch house" with an unbelievable view of the volcano, and a small but very nice pool. Breakfast each morning, which was included, was "home-cooked" and delicious! According to the staff, the hotel is family owned and operated, and it really shows. La Fortuna itself is an amazing place, and well worth the trip, and I think Coloso Arenal was the best possible choice!

We loved this little hotel! We stayed in one of the log cabins, which was wonderfully decorated, faced the teeny pool, and sat right under the volcano.

The rooms were cleaned, and they created towel sculptures for us. We were also greeted with a free bottle of Champagne for our honeymoon – which was extremely thoughtful. The accommodations themselves were fantastic and picturesque. It’s just a dollar or two cab ride into town, but you feel quite remote where you are since it is out of the city.

The family that runs the place was also very nice. They helped us decide what to do, call taxis, etc. They are pretty much available at all times, which was nice as well.

The food was really not great, but they did put a lot of effort into breakfast so we appreciated it nonetheless – we would DEFINITELY stay there again. The only other con of this hotel was the extremely squishy bed and the fact that the sheets kept coming off the mattress. More expensive then the other hotels in town, but well worth it.
