This was our first destination on our trip.. and we LOVED it here.. we went during the rainy season, so we did a "lava tour" as they call it for super cheap... the lava truck picked us up right outside of the hostel.....

the hostel itself was super fun.. has a pool right in the middle of the whole complex, rooms were roomy.... there was a bathroom and shower IN the room with us.... only problem was coorinating with others in the room for showers....

the staff was super helpful and friendly.... spoke little english but could get their point across, there was a nice little area with hammocks to lay on... and you can see the volcano from your front door...

there was free internet/computer room also.. it was air conditioned which was nice.... but you have to stand up to use them, which was kinda a pain...

overall it was a great hostel!!!

The pool is beautiful, the rooms, nice, clean, spacious (we had a private room). The food was good, and at a reasonable price. We felt safe. the tours desk was very helpful, and the shuttle convenient. I'd highly recommend it. It felt like I was staying at a resort (a small one), not a backpacker's place.

Pretty good place in the town of La Fortuna. Good view of the Volcano, gated with a secure fence, good service etc. No surprises...just a very decent hostel. Great pool, too! There is a restaurant here but we decided to eat in one of the many places down the street.

Fifty-five dollars for a single room in low season is bizzare.

For our one week trip to Costa Rica, the only reservations we made ahead of time were at the Arenal Backpackers Resort as our first destination was La Fortuna and we wanted to know where we were going when we arrived in the country. This turned out to be an excellent decision, as when we got to La Fortuna, it seemed to be the best place in town by far. First of all, the owner's brother picked us up right at the airport in San Jose and drove us directly to the hotel, and although the two-hour ride through the mountains was a bit bumpy and not cheap ($30/person I believe) it was well worth it for tired travelers whose flight had been delayed.

The hotel itself was great - the staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean, the kitchen/bar made great food for a reasonable cost and was open late, the pool was great to have considering the heat and humidity, and the shower was one of the best I have had anywhere, including my own home. I think the amount of water pressure it had would be illegal in the U.S. The front desk also had a number of tours available, which the staff would book for us. The prices were cheaper than any we saw in town, and the two I did (canyoning and volcano hike with hot springs) were highly worthwhile. They also have a whole mess of hammocks for guests to use, which was a nice touch.

There were a few negatives, however. First of all, our reservation was for a four-person private room, which ended up being two double beds. Because of this and the cheaper cost, we moved to a dorm room for our last two nights after doing one night in the private room. The shower was not as amazing there, but it was still fine. Like many other places in Costa Rica, they also asked you to throw away toilet paper than flush it, which wasn't so bad, but I think somebody in the dorm room must have not followed directions because it got clogged and then was continuously used all night despite this. Once we alerted the staff to it, they unclogged it pretty quickly, but it was disgusting until then. Also, they provided a computer room with four computers, but the Internet was extremely slow, even if it was working.

Overall, the Arenal area has a lot to do and is definitely worth visiting, but the town of La Fortuna itself doesn't have much to it. Because of this, the Backpackers Resort was a great place to stay because it offered the cheapest tours, the best (if not only pool), and a lively restaurant/bar/common area that was the best place to spend nights, as the sunsets were surprisingly early (6:30ish) limiting the amount of activities that could be done in town or elsewhere.
