My friend and I went to the Arenal area for just a weekend trip and found Club Rio online. We liked that they had many activities to choose from in one place and figured it was the smartest place to go since we didn't have much time. We were so happy once we got there; the staff is super friendly and accommodating. We were able to do more activities than we initially planned (rock climbing, tubing, horse back riding, animal sanctuary tour and the hot springs, of course). I can't say enough about the staff they really were top notch. My only disappointment is that we couldn't see sloths (they were supposed to have a arrived a day prior) but I guess that's a reason to go back as soon as possible!

We spent the afternoon at Club Rio and had a blast! The only regret is that we didn't get there earlier in the day.
We took a one hour horse back ride through the forest and nature with Oscar, our guide. He was really nice and was very informative on the area, the wildlife and Costa Rica. We loved the fact that we were able to see so much of the hills and river without hiking up and down the steep and often muddy hills. Call me lazy, but having the horses do the work for us was well worth the money and bottom line...it was fun!!! We were able to cover so much ground on horse back versus hiking it. We saw a toucan, humming birds and some other wildlife I can't remember the names of.
We also did the evening animal reserve tour. They have these tours hourly through out the day for free but this one costed us $35 per person as this one included the feeding of the animals. There are numerous cats, monkeys and toucans. All of the animals at the reserve are animals that the Costa Rican government had confiscated from illegal owners. Rather than releasing them into the wild, where they would not be able to survive, the government made a deal with the Springs Resort owner, Lee Banks, to set up a reserve to keep the animals in a safe environment. They are building a new home for a couple of sloths that were confiscated. I thought the $35 charge was a little steep but I guess it goes to feeding and taking care of the animals. The cool part was where we got to go into the cage with the toucans and feed them. For obvious reasons, the feeding of the cats (mountain lions, etc) and the monkeys were from the outside of the cages.
Other activities available for a fee are, river tubing, canoeing as well as rock climbing on a manmade rock.
There are several natural hot springs there. You take a little walk into the hills and wooded area on a concrete walkway to get these hot springs. Very nice!
There is a small bar/cafe for drinks and food. There are lockers and towels available for free.
