“Set in beautiful gardens”
Reviewed December 21, 2010

This hotel is set in lovely gardens about 5km outside of La Fortuna. It doesn't have any thermal springs, unlike some in the local vicinity, but it does have beautiful gardens, This also means insects - so don't forget the insect repellent.

We ate in the hotel one evening - I wouldn't recommend it. The food took ages to come and mine was overcooked. The breakfast selection was good, and the service there much better. If you need the internet then their routers are up and down a bit - so be prepared for that, otherwise there is internet in the hotel lobby. Also the phone reception was also a bit touch and go if that is important to you.

The rooms were clean and well maintained, although the shower took a bit of persuading one morning. There is air con, and there is a little patio are outside with 2 rocking chairs and a little table. Perfect for volcano watching. We bought our own beer from the supermarket - and although the hotel doesn't have fridges in the room, there are ice machines that are dotted around.

There is a pool and a playpark for the kids, as well as a jacuzzi. I didn't try any - but they looked safe enough. I would certainly come here again. Beware you really need a car, and also unless you want to hear loads of stuff about the volcano that you can't be bothered to read, you can do the walk near the bottom of the volcano in the national park for about 10 bucks, plus the hot springs at Baldi for 28 bucks - which saves a fair amount on the hotel list price for the same tour (obviously you are paying then for the transport and the guide).

By the way - if you are a resident of Costa Rica - always ask for the resident price, as this is cheaper, and you have to produce your residents card or passport.

Was in Arena for 3 night and this was the PERFECT hotel. We paid less than $60 a night (through Orbitz) and what a deal!

PROS: The room was clean, spacious, comfortable, and had a view of the volcano (which went off several times during our stay) and gardens. The gardens are huge, perfect for short walks and well maintained. The staff at the hotel is amazing as well. They helped us with booking day trips (horseback ride/zip line combo and rafting/rappelling combo) and with transportation (greyline or interbus). Free breakfast??? Yes please! All different kinds of eggs, beans, rice, fruits, cereals, fried plantains!!, meats, juice, coffee coffee coffee!

CONS: The downside to the hotel is that it is far away from town (about a $10 taxi ride each way). They do offer 2 restaurants on site with amazing food for OK prices (~$30 pp for fresh seafood). The portions were huge and I definitely could have split my meal with my friend. With no fridge or microwave you can't take it back to the room and eat it later, so either you try and eat it all there or let them take it away. DEFINITELY get the fresh seafood. One night I got tilapia, 4 GIANT shrimp, and veggies...AMAZING! The internet wouldn't work on my Mac and front desk couldn't really help me with it (not sure why because it worked everywhere else) however they have 2 computers in the lobby to use at all times and were generally available. I also wished they offered coffee 24 hours a day in the lobby. Costa Rican coffee is amazing and I craved it at all hours.

The bottom line...An amazing hotel, a great deal, definitely recommend, and definitely will return.

We stayed at this property for 2 nights, it is just beautiful. We regret that we arrived after dark the first day and then had 2 full days of tours off-site. So we did not get to see all the property had to offer. The gardens are beautiful with lots of hummingbirds butterfly's and other birds. Breakfast was included with our stay and was very tasty and generous. We had a very nice view of the Arenal Volcano right from our rocking chairs on our back porch. We were in room 218 which was close to the pool area and the breakfast area. The staff were very personable. We would definately recommend this hotel and would stay there again if we ever return to Costa Rica.

We loved this hotel! I had read so many good things about it online and it exceeded our expectations in every way. The check-in process could have been a nightmare, as I had mistakenly reserved the wrong dates 5 months previously. The desk clerk was extremely helpful, he managed to straighten out the reservation and give us a beautiful room in about 10 minutes. Offering us delicious cups of fresh juice while we waited was a very nice touch.

Our room was beautiful, very large, with heavy wooden furniture, a coffee maker with the best coffee we ever had during our stay in Costa Rica, a spacious bathroom, and a private patio with rocking chairs and table. The patio has an overhang, so even during the tropical downpours, we were able to sit outside and marvel at the gorgeous foliage, the hummingbirds, and of course, the volcano! Which, due to the rain, was only clearly visible on 1 day, but it was a spectacular sight.

The grounds of the hotel are spotless, with luxurious landscaping and paths to the pool areas and restaurants, and a nice walking trail. Our room was only a few doors down from the reception area, which made it extremely convenient to access the complimentary computers/internet access as well as what turned out to be our own private pool and jacuzzi. In the 4 days we were there, not another soul ever used the ones near our end of the hotel. The kids pool and swim up bar pool were at the other end of the resort. We were also right near the more casual of the two restaurants.

The restaurant that served the included buffet breakfast was outstanding. A full hot buffet, with an omelet station, fresh fruit, rice 'n beans, fried plantains, french toast/pancakes, muffins, juices, cereal, etc. We started every morning with about 3,000 calories each. The waiters were always helpful and super friendly. We ate most of our dinners here as well, which were always excellent. The restaurant prices were higher than we expected, but in line with US prices and there was always more food than we could finish. The "pizza" dinner rolls were amazing! Which explains why we could never finish our meals ;)

The hotel can arrange any activity for you, and the front desk staff was very helpful in making phone calls for me when I rescheduled a particular activity 3 times due to heavy rain. Don't miss the Sky Trek Canopy Zip Line tour. Be sure to use the original Sky Trek/Sky Tram tour, as they have the best zip line in all of Costa Rica - there are 8 lines, and several are half a mile long!

The hotel isn't exactly within walking distance of anything, and it's about a $10 cab ride each way into La Fortuna if you have the hotel call one. I found out later that the cabs that park near the church in La Fortuna would have been a little less expensive, but plan to spend quite a bit on transportation if you don't have a car. There is no bus service from La Fortuna to the outlying hotels, and the road is hilly. It would be a good 4 mile hike each way, but the sidewalks stop just at the edge of town, so walking could be a bit dangerous with the traffic.

Our housekeeper made adorable towel animals for us every day, and left extra coffee packets. I was worried about exotic insects in the room but the most interesting thing we saw was a small black caterpillar. There is a mango tree at the entrance to the property, and a local toucan visited several times a day to eat the fruit, attracting quite a crowd.

We were sad to leave this wonderful, friendly, beautiful place but had a great experience in Manuel Antonio too. We loved our trip to Costa Rica and the Volcano Lodge, and look forward to coming back.

From the moment we arrived we experienced exceptionally friendly and helpful service. Check in included a welcome drink - and a personal in-room overview of the room details - including the A/C (which not every hotel in this area has). Staff was a pleasure to deal with and rivaled other hotels in higher categories. When I wanted to make a reservation for the hot springs the front desk immediately offered to call for me. The room was clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was generous. The gardens - even in the rain - were lovely. The hotel also included free internet service - also not prevalent at all hotels. As amazing was the value. I liked this hotel much better than ones on the same trip where we paid double and triple as much. I'd come here again anytime!

The grounds of the hotel are a garden filled with flowers, hummingbirds and butterflies. The dense growth gives separation and privacy to the rooms. The "hotel" then is more like a subdivision, with each "house" containing 4 rooms. (You will walk a bit more here than in most hotels, but the walks are pleasant).

Restaurant was good, but perhaps not as good as some of the options in town. The rooms are big and clean, with a nice roomy bathroom. The grounds have several swimming pools and hot tubs to choose from, and a nature trail.

The best thing about the hotel was the staff. The housekeeping staff were very nice to our young son, and the restaurant staff all learned his name during our 3 day stay. Folks at the front desk were always helpful, with advice about local attractions.

Would definitely stay again. Good hotel and good value.

From arrival to departure service was excellent.
Rooms are bigger than usual rooms in hotels and the garden-like view from the verranda is great.
The hotel garden area is extremely neat and well kept.
