“quiet and pretty”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2009

Stayed at Volcano Lodge for 3 nights. The place is pleasant, clean, and nice. It poured non-stop during our entire stay so I can't speak much for the pool/grounds/view of the volcano. The rooms are eco-friendly and well-maintained, especially considering the incredible moisture of the region. Example: It took 3 days for my wet bathing suit to dry while hung up.

Two small downers: The first night, I found several dead gnats on my pillow which I think came out of the air conditioner above. That stuff doesn't bother me too much and insects will occur in this type of lodging/town. I brushed them off and slept soundly. Also, the free wifi wasn't functioning well in our rooms. That said, it worked fine at the restaurant and also they have computers at reception that are free for use.

Breakfast was included and was excellent. We ate lunch at the Sura restaurant one day, and the food/service were fantastic, but wildly overpriced compared to what we got elsewhere around town.

Also, we got massages which were very well-priced and very soothing, although the massage room/"spa" was dreary and certainly not pretty or calming.

The staff at the front desk was pleasant and very helpful when it came to helping with day tours, etc.

One final note: housekeeping arranges the towels in shapes of animals or plants and leaves them on your bed, and they are truly works of art!! We were really pleasantly surprised each day by that little detail.

Gate 1 Travel offers a self guided trip to Costa Rica. We are fairly well traveled and consider this to be our all time favorite trip so far. Gate 1 arranged the airfare, hotels and car rental for us and did a fabulous job. Volcano Lodge & Garden was top notch: flowers, plants and birds, with a view of an active volcano from our veranda.
I highly recommend it.

We stayed here for 4 nights during our honeymoon and we loved it. We were there during the "Green season" (slow season) which I think is the only time to go. The staff was very friendly, spoke English, and very accommodating to all our inquiring activities. The room was clean with a huge tiled walk in shower. We had the windows and fan on during the day and air-condiitoning on during the night. Everyday when we came back from our excursions, we would have an animal made using our towels. Very cute! Breakfast was included and it was the best food we had on our trip. The best part of Volcano Lodge was the gardens. They were immaculate, full of lush flowers and greenery. Very quiet our whole stay. We could see the Volcano Arenal from our patio. There were two pools at the lodge and we enjoyed both of them. One pool came with a swim-up bar and then the other was much more secluded. We swam there each night and we had it all to ourselves. If staying next to Arenal, you need to stay here!

Only stayed one night, but it was a comfortable clean hotel. The property was immaculate. The view form the back porch was amazing. Very private.

This is a great hotel to serve as a base for your activities around La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano. The gardens and pool areas are lovely and there is a wonderful view of the volcano. We were fortunate to have the mist and clouds clear from the volcano's peak while we were there and took wonderful photos.

The rooms are large and clean. The room cons are the following:
- no mini-fridge and an uninsulated ice bucket (this was more of a pain than you'd think)
- very dark with only cold and dim fluorescent lighting
- dark green poly-blend dark green bedspreads that make the room even darker
- only two pillows on a king bed (no extras to be found)

The pros:
- very clean - wonderful housekeepers
- large open showers
- all rooms are close to one of the two pools and restaurants
- lovely views from comfortable patio rocking chairs

The thing that bothered us about the resort is there is sort of a confusion about the function and atmosphere of the two pool/restaurant/bar areas. Granted most folks, including ourselves, were exhausted by 9 or 10 so "nightlife" was not really called for. However, it seemed like this area just really needed something to make it feel inviting. A few table candles and some soft music would have made a huge difference. If you visit, see if it strikes you this way as well.

Finally and on a very positive note, the food is very good if you order Costa Rican dishes, the two tours we did (Sky Trek zip-lines and horseback riding to the Arenal Waterfall) were the highlights of our trip.

Spotless room
View of the volcano from the bed!
Spectacularly beautiful grounds - even in backyards accessable behind the cottages
Nice pool - large enough for exercise
Very nice restuarants - and complimentary breakfast
Extremely pleasant and helpful staff
We were delighted and only negative is that door to back patio doesnt close securely unless you lock it from inside - so if you want to go out back and don't want any bugs coming in, put a sock in the door to keep it securely shut ! Room 217

A $6 cab ride to Fortuna (about 6 kms) - try Nene's for a nice local dining experience
