“Truly perfect stay!”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

Amazing across the board! Beautiful grounds and gardens, spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano, but by far the best part was the staff and how well I was treated. They were more accommodating than I could have ever hoped for and the grounds were constantly maintained. It really was a wonderful place and hopefully I'll be back soon!

The staff was amazing - very courteous, and accommodating. The sea bass was the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The group felt like old friends and evening we would meet and have drinks at the restaurant. I would love to return and stay at the Volcano Lodge and Gardens in the future. It was like it being in a dream. Just wonderful!

Such a pleasant resort, particularly for the price. Comfortable, clean rooms (ours had a sitting patio that looked right onto the volcano), stunning grounds -- flowers everywhere, butterflies and hummingbirds. Staff were incredibly pleasant and helpful, always willing to help with requests at any hour. Feels very secluded, in a nice way. Restaurant was a plus; it's good to have the option to stay at the resort, as La Fortuna is a 10-minute drive away. Some items a bit pricey but they also had a $12 burger and $10 casado, which was great. Happy hour every day was also a nice touch -- great excuse to hang around the jacuzzi.

Overall, not a super-luxury resort but an incredibly comfortable, pleasant place to spend a week, and a great value. Would go back in a minute.

I stayed at the Volcano Lodge & Gardens last week and found that the reviews I read before going were very accurate. The hotel and gardens were stunning, there is a really nice pathway that goes around the grounds. The pools and hot tubs were wonderful!

It is $10 to take a cab into town, which made me feel a little trapped but the grounds were nice enough to keep me occupied.

During our stay we went to the restaurant several times and felt that the food was very good, although priced a little high.

Down sides- Our room did smell like mildew which if we shut the windows activated my asthma and the walls are extremely thin. We could hear everything going on in the room next to ours, including the neighbors opening their safe. Which wouldn't normally be a problem but our neighbors were very inconsiderate and woke us up by being very loud several times at night during our stay.

Do not let the down sides deter you because I felt that they were outweighed by the pool, gardens, spa and restaurant.

Very peaceful and private - nice garden - lovely room and view - great pool with view of Volcan Arenal - nice restaurant about $12 for burger and fries there - only problem was that it was too far away from La Fortuna for us to walk around and to get there you had to get a taxi $10 each way!!!
But otherwise nice once you are staying there.

The Volcano Lodge is a beautiful hotel surrounded by lush gardens. On a clear day, you can see Arenal Volcano from most of the property. The rooms and bathrooms were surprisingly spacious and clean. Upon arriving we were able to spot a small group of Toucans flying overhead. If you look, you can see wildlife on and near the hotel such as Coati (a raccoon-like creature), geckos, various birds, and a small fox-like creature (forgot the name).

The breakfast dinning area was beautiful! The breakfast buffet had a large variety of breakfast foods (from rice and beans to pancakes and waffles). This same dinning area hosts happy hour during 4-6pm. Two drinks for $7!

One fun thing about this hotel was that we always looked forward to returning to the room after it was cleaned to see the new towel art the cleaning staff had left us!

We rented a car from the Airport so it was easy to travel the area. The hotel is not too far from the Hanging bridges and from La Fortuna.

We loved this hotel and would recommend it to our friends, however we could occasionally hear our neighbors. It did not detract from our stay, and it was only occasional!

This was the nicest of the places we stayed on our trip to Costa Rica. We spent the first two nights in town, at the Hotel San Bosco, which coincidentally turned out to be owned by the same company as this one. That made it easy for us to get a ride to the lodge when we checked out. It's true that it is remote without a car, which is why I'm glad we got to experience the town of La Fortuna first. The restaurant and pools were good enough that we didn't feel we were missing much by being "stuck" there. They even have a happy hour from 4-6, so we didn't feel we had to overpay for drinks. Also, any tours you book will pick you up and drop you off. We took another reviewers advice and walked to the pizza place down the road. It's actually part of another hotel, and the trip wasn't worth it since our hotel had better food (I'm vegan and had no trouble finding things to eat there).
I had only a few minor issues:
1. The key card did not work when we got back from an excursion, and the man who brought a replacement chose to suggest it was somehow my fault, rather than offering an apology.
2. Having to wear a wristband for your entire stay is irritating.
3. The AC leaked when we turned it off, soaking some items on the nightstand.
Other than that, it was lovely. I didn't mind walking to the front desk; we live in NYC and are used to walking everywhere. The view of the volcano was remarkable, and the gardens were full of interesting birds and butterflies. I'd absolutely stay here again.

Room Tip: If you don't have a car, ask to be near the pool and restaurant. It'll cut down on your walk...
