“Heavenly experience”
Reviewed July 12, 2005

We stayed at this hotel for one night on a road trip from San Jose to see the volcano and La Fortuna Falls. If I had to plan it again, I would have stayed another night. This hotel was our second choice as we arrived at Tabacon with no reservation and they were full. We then drove to this hotel and thought we would take a chance and it turned out to be a fantastic experience It is a new hotel and one can tell that they are still figuring things out in some ways, but that makes them more accomodating. The property is beautifully landscaped--the most beautiful tropical flowers. The staff is great. The cabin faced the volcano and had a porch. How wonderful it was to sit out on the porch, drinking a bottle of wine and watching the volcanic activity. It was so peaceful and secluded. The cabin was new and clean with great decor--the bathroom and showerwere awesome. We were told we could use the pool/spa at any time during the evening--it did not close. We did not feel like eating in the restaurant or room, so they brought us room service at the hot tub. It was after hours, so they brought us what they could at that time and a bottle of wine--the guacomole was good. The breakfast buffet was pretty good and the view from restaurant (like the view from our room) was fabulous. The room rate was very reasonable and the service and and value was great. This hotel is hightly recommended for this area. I almost do not want people to know about this hotel as i would like to keep it a little secret. I predict they will give Tabacon some competition in the years to come.

We spent 5 nights in deluxe bungalow and thought is was perfect for our needs. I deliberately chose the smaller resort feel and the private space of a bungalow over the large hotel like structure at Tabacon.

THE RESORT: Montana has stunning volcano views on one side and a rainforest canyon on the other. The hotel is in the safe zone from the active volcano which had minor erruptions when we were there (Last major erruption 2001) Montana boasts several brand new suites (considerably more expensive--$200US) in the center of the resort. The grounds are spectacular, on par with, if not a slight notch below, the famed Tabacon. Lush tropical plants and beautiful flowers. The grounds are very well maintained. There is also a spa but I can't comment on it. Prices were only a bit cheaper than the US--my suggestion would be to go into town to get the same services at a fraction of US prices). Other patrons are pretty much all Americans which was characteristic of the entire area and, honestly, not 100% my speed.

THE ROOMS: Our bungalow had large glass windows on both sides so we could see both. I also liked the location because it was set back from the road and had great access to the pool area. There were two double beds a TV with limited cable, refrigerator and a small closet with safe. The bathroom was large, clean and included a few amenities. Bed linens were older, thin and should probably be replaced (I think the suites have nicer stuff), but towels were great. Room was comfortable and cosy--keep in mind, this is Central America, not the US, and this is definitely 4* by their standards.

THE SERVICE: The only drawback of the place--I agree with another post where they said they try too hard but fail in this regard. I've never seen a more incompetent front desk. They misdirected calls, called us every day with a wake up call that we only requested on the first and then couldn't find our pre-payment when we checked out (after a few stern words and 30 min later they found it). Fortunately, nothing damaging and everything was resolved

THE FOOD: Only had the included breakfast buffet which was great with lots of choice--fresh fruit, etc.. LOTS Of restaurants of all types in La fortuna and the food is pretty good. A little expensive for Costa Rica because this area is "tourista or turismo" central but reasonable by major US city prices. Make sure to eat the local fish which is super fresh and get a typical casada plate (meat, rice, beans, salad and tortillas). There is a small supermarket in town to grab sodas and snacks which is recommended since there isn't a place to buy snacks at the hotel.

EXCURSIONS: The hotel can book your excursions but don't bother--go into town where there are TONS of brokers and you're likely to get a better deal. Most excursions include pick up/return to Montana---everyone knows it. We did the canopy tour, waterfall rappel, mountainbiking, hanging bridges, baldi hot springs, cano negro river tour and whitewater rafting. Many included snacks and lunch. We used Bobo adventures and were very pleased.

Overall, it was perfect for our needs and I'd go back. I have to say all the talk is about Tabacon because its considered one of Costa Rica's best hotels but I think Montanga was great.

This place will eventually be a top nothced resort, at least it has the potential to be.

I was there for my honeymoon, March '05. I stayed in their brand new suite, whcih I believe I was the first guest in that room since there wasn't even a cable cord for the brand new tv yet. The setting is amazing, but the place was still under construction/remodel... Out side my door was a dirt field, torn up for addition of more bungalows.

The pool is tiny, the hot tub was full of what looked like dead skin... guess they don't skim the pool that often.

Altough the service staff tried really hard to help you, it fell short. The pool bartender is extremely slow. The dining staff was comical because they were trying so hard to be a 4 star establishment... the menu was aweful and way over priced. $14 for the local Talapia fish was a bit silly. However, you had to give them crdit for trying so hard.

The spa was great! Reasonably priced there...

All in all, give this place a couple of years to learn the ropes and it will be worth the stay. They are a bit remote from the city, La Fortuna, and there really isn't much to do in the local walking vacinity.

The Montana was nice. As the reviewer said Rustic comfort. The views are beautiful ,although we never saw the Volcano. The staff was helpful when we asked. This is a good size hotel with lots of tour buses no pampering here. Our room was al ittle noisy we were in a lodge with 8 rooms . I would ask for a single cabana or a duplex. The breakfast was OK . We did not eat in the resteraunt. We stayed 3 days 2/16/-2/19 2005 I think 2 would have been enough.
