“Aweful....especially if your under Age 70!”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

American Express Travel gave this place rave reviews. We showed up to find stains all over the sheets, sofa soiled and bathroom needs new grout. My husband is allergic to black mold and he was having issues. We couldn't run fast enough. The hot tub was broken and the pool was being renovated. Front desk was so unhelpful when I told them of my disappointment in their room. American Express reservations was closed so we were forced to sleep there since it was late. The front desk kept American Express on eternal hold to try to resolve the problem. I called housekeeping while we ate dinner and they just tucked in the top cover and didn't change the sheets. So I called for house keeping again and 2 boys showed up and I showed them the stains, etc... They brought a huge stack of sheets and we ended up using top sheets. Also the mattress pad look like it shrunk so it didn't fit the bed so I had them use 2 of them and over lap. It took 30 min. to resolve the situation. The one of the young boys was very embarrassed and apologized. They also do not have a cover on the duvet so I don't know how often it is washed so I had them put a sheet on top of it as well. We had a driver pick us up at 9am the next morning. The front desk told the driver we left for 40 minutes! We didn't. We were waiting for the driver!

We are in our 40's and I believe we were the youngest ones there. No was seen under the age of 70! They all had "Sun Tours" neck tags on.

Dear Client.

Thank you very much for visiting us while we regret not having met your expectations. the things you mentioned are not common in our property, what for you was a stain on the sheet, it was actually part of the sheet with less color, but anyway, I inform you that all your comments will be taken into account. And yes, the pool is under renovation, as the whole hotel in general.
It´s important to mention during your stay we had a big group and they were people over 70 years old, this doesn´t means young people not visit Montaña de Fuego. We get families, groups of students, etc...
Thank you very much once again for writing, have a nice year.

We stayed in a family room - two double beds. The lighting in the bathroom was so poor I had to look up each time to even see if I had turned the light on. We were here for 3 nights. The room was cleaned on the 2nd night - the other nights just the beds were made and the towels folded. We had to ask for hand towels and each day when they folded the towels - they took the hand towels and we had to ask again for more. The facilities are nice but worn. The bar has a good Happy hour deal - 2/1 - but the rest of the time it is very expensive. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and filling. The view of the volcano is what really makes this place.

This place was very nice! Clean Simple with a great view of the volcano (assuming that is - its not too cloudy and you can see the volcano). Wifi wasn't great - only in one location - at reception, but as we learned that seems to be the case in a lot of places. Breakfast was included and delicious. Rooms were spacious, clean (ants around but that seems to be a problem in the jungle in general). Great price, we recommended. The restaurant on premises had great breakfasts otherwise so-so. If you have a car there are better places to eat in the area.

I recently stayed at the Montana de Fuego with a group of friends during our visit to La Fortuna.

The hotel met our needs. I would describe the rooms as rustic. They're clean, but the lighting is pretty dim and we saw a couple bugs (you are among nature).

The pool area is nice, with a couple of hot springs (varying water temperatures). There's also a spa with a hot tub. There's also a poolside bar.

Breakfast (included) at the restaurant was good. Large variety and an omelet station. We thought the restaurant was a little pricey for other meals.
There is a restaurant within walking distance from the hotel that is good, as well as lots of options in town (take a taxi).

Hotel provided what we needed and expected - A room to crash after whole day of activities. Agree that rooms showed age and people could be a little more helpful. All rooms have Volcano view ( Arenal is not active for 2-3 years ) We made right choice in having rental car. We were able to explore Arenal NP, lake and La Fortuna. We enjoyed activities at Hot Springs, club Rio, Sky Track and Arenal Paraiso.

We liked free breakfast as well as dinner at the restaurant.

Don't plan to spend whole day at hotel as it is not a resort with a lot of cool activities. Have rental car and explore Arenal area yourself. Having some research and reservation done in advance will make your trip better.

Dear Customer.

Thank you very much for all your comments, they help us a lot to be a better hotel.
Thank you also to take your time and let to know the rest of the people the nice experience you had with us and how the clients can plan their trips around the area, although we have many things to do inside the property; like canopy, horses to the river, horses to the mountain, tubing, etc...
We will be waiting for you once again, have a great year!!!

This place is trying hard to be an upscale resort but really doesn't have the facilities or staff to make it worth the money. The spa is a total rip off - do NOT spend money there. The cabins are okay, although the beds were pretty uncomfortable and the cabins felt a little claustrophobia-inducing. The hot springs is not particularly nice especially compared to a really great one like Tabacon. The restaurant is overpriced and just okay food. The service there was pretty good though and it was surprisingly kid friendly. There are a lot of stressmaking rules and threatened fees...lose the towel pass and it's $20. Lose the safe key and it's $100. And you have to wear a security wristband the whole time you are staying there. Overall, kind of a strange experience and we wouldn't recommend it.

Dear Guest.

Thank you very much for your comments, they are all very important to us.
Related commentary compared to Tabacon, is something like a little irrelevant because the specialty of them are hot springs, for us it is just a plus for our customers and thinking they have the opportunity to enjoy a little paradise in this section of nature.
Apologies if are policies sounded like rules, all the hotels have their own and they are necessary for a good working operation and better service.
Really thank you very much for every comment, they help us to be better.
