“Not the best place of La Fortuna”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

Lets start with them room, simple and clean but the shower doors were not working at all and one of room walls had a hole. The hotel looked old and in a need for a serious renewal. The food and drinks are really expensive and they weren't so great. Now the thermal waters..... 3 small pools and for my taste they were not hot thermal waters...they were like warm pools, the jacuzzi at the spa was even better. The Spa is super expensive....

If you want to experience the Volcano views and hot thermal waters this is not the place for you.

My partner and I checked into the MDF a few nights ago for what I hoped would be the crowning jewel on a week in Costa Rica with mixed experiences (including a night at the Dunn Inn c/o T.A. in San Jose 5/10). To sum it up the rooms do stink of cheap air freshener, and not just lightly- annoyingly. The windows don't open so airing out the rooms consists of opening front and back doors hoping for a breeze. The bathrooms read 1971 and have no hot water. The staff do their best to provide a pleasant experience but lack the ability to recognize or facilitate the need for some simple improvements. The restaurant on site has the worst lighting ever experienced by this traveler and the food matches the ambiance- asz bad. The "asado" special was recommended by the waiter and although requested med. rare came as well done and rubbery and flavourless as could be. I could go on but I'll save you the time- PLEASE DON'T EAT THERE- My gf did not appreciate the dead cockroach in the salon...well it is CR after all

My husband and I stayed at Montana de Fuego Hotel and Spa for 5 nights this January (start of summer). Of those days, we've seen the Arenal Volcano's cone/tip once - it's always been covered by clouds the times we do look and the other times, we're busy doing other tours or activities. We were assigned Room 232 and this room faced the volcano, the hotel's "lake" Lago, and the highway. Either way, our view was awesome and the room was clean and well-kept - nothing to brag about (it's definitely not the four seasons) and even though it faced the highway, we did not here any road noise. In addition, the location of the hotel is not within the city center but if you have a car it won't be a problem at all. It's about a 5-7 min drive into the city.
I did not try the hotel's "hot" spring but my husband did and he did say that it wasn't really "hot" - you could skip it. I did not try the Spa but did lounge by the pool - nothing special either. The hotel's buffet breakfast was good with various choices. They had 2 fruits everyday (different combination of pineapple, papaya, watermelon), egg station, scrambled eggs, rice, plantains, breads, 2 different fruit juice and coffee, pancakes, and some pastries.
In summary: Great view, average room & pool, good breakfast.

We stayed at the Hotel for the first part of a Costa Rica trip. The hotel was very nice and close to get into La Fortuna. We were put up in a suite, with a view of the volcano out our window. The deluxe rooms 235-243 have great views overlooking a valley, so if you don't need the extra room in the suite, go with the deluxe room. Jefferey was very helpful and blast to hang out with by the pool. The cab ride is $10-12 to go into town. One tip I would give is go into town to eat dinner and have drinks. The food is good at the restaurant at hotel, but in town you get a better meal for less (Lava Lounge and Don Rufino are great) Also, go into town to book your excursions, they are a little cheaper.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. Our cabin had an unbeatable view of the volcano, room was spotless & had all the amenities of a luxury hotel. Comfortable beds, plush towels, unlimited coffee. Front office/reception staff were great, polite and patient with our questions and eager to help. Jeffrey, the guest services manager was fabulous! He catered to our every need and made sure we had everything we could ever need. Everyone was friendly and professional, from the bell-boy to the bartender at the wet-bar. The pool area was beautiful and the restaurant was delicious. Transportation to and from La Fortuna was easy to book, although the bus was on a schedule, so be sure to plan your day in advance. Great canopy tours with Marlena and Christian and the horseback riding to the volcano with Alex was awesome. I am already planning my return trip & I recommend this hotel to families, couples or singles looking to enjoy Costa Rica!

My girlfriend and I reserved 3 nights (Jan 18-21) at this property in a Deluxe Bungalow with a Volcano View, and printed our confirmation guaranteeing exactly this. When we checked in at the front desk, they gave us our key, a map of the grounds, and told us to go to #268. We walk in, instantly smelled urine all over the accommodation, pulled the shades to notice there was no volcano view, and finally noticed incense sticks/burners all over the room.

We were quite upset, naturally, as we hoped for a nice, romantic stay in the Arenal Volcano region for our vacation. So we went back to the front desk to ask why we didn't receive the room we had reserved. The front desk girl, Priscilla, told us they had rented our Deluxe Bungalow to someone else, and only had #268 left. We said this was unacceptable, but they refused to give us a refund because "the hotel manager" wasn't there to authorize it. Super shady, and the whole place just felt a little creepy.

We handed back the key and told them we could not stay in the room they gave us, and asked when their 'manager' would be back to issue our refund. They told us she would be back the next morning after 8, so we called then but she was not there. Then we called back Sunday and again, the manager was not there. Really????

When we got back to the US yesterday, we called the agency we booked through and they said they would call the hotel on our behalf to request a refund, but they too got the runaround and were told over and over that the hotel manager was "not available." Late last night they finally did reach Jennifer, the hotel manager, who refused to issue us a refund because (and get THIS...) she claimed we were UPGRADED to a better room than we had booked!!! So let me get this straight: you rent away our deluxe room that we reserved, take away our volcano view, put us in the only creepy room you claim to have left with a view of some nearby plants, and that's an UPGRADE???? Wow, the nerve of some people.

Not worth our time anymore, so we simply contested the charge with our credit card company who instantly credited us back, and we expect Montana de Fuego will not even attempt to receive payment.
So watch out for this place. Bad service, atrocious 1970's decor rooms that smell musty and old, and we imagine this hotel undoubtedly has more problems seeing as though we were only there for less than 5 minutes. This experience really bummed us out because we loved the area and were excited to explore the area in peace and comfort together.

If you want the absolute BEST place to stay in the Arenal area, stay at Baldi Hot Springs or the gem we found later that night: The Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens. The Nayara is the most romantic and high-class hotel we have ever stayed at around the world. Truly first class, and an experience you will never forget (in a good way)!!!

Room Tip: Beware Montana de Fuego!!!! Stay at the Nayara instead!!!!!!

My masseuse was Sylvia and my friend's was Rosa. Both of us are in our late 60's and experienced, seasoned world travelers, and the massage I received at this spa was far and away the best I have ever had. I had several a aches and pains from being out on the road and the morning after the massage ALL of them were gone. I average about 3 massages a month and have for the past 15 years. I have never had a massage that could compete with this one. I was astounded! My friend says the same. If you go there ask specifically for Sylvia or Rosa and get the Swedish massage. The only draw back is that you want the massage to never end.
