When we found out our tour group switched our hotel to his one, we were disappointed because the other hotel looked nice in photos we saw, but when we got here, our disappointed vanished quickly. The drive to the reception, the gardens, the ambience, all felt and looked great. One of our biggest concerns was whether there was air conditioning in the rooms because the website didn't mention it. After our rustic lodgings in Tortuguero, with only a fan to cool us, we were hoping for air conditioning to make sleeping more comfortable.
When we were taken to our room, we were suprised that it wasn't a room, but our own private bungalow. It was like having a mini-house with a front and back porch. The room was spacious and the bathroom was huge (it even included a bidet). When we walked into the bungalow, it was hot (35 degrees C / 95 degrees F). The person who brought us here said "caliente", but quickly showed us how to turn on and use the air conditioning so all was good. The front porch has a great view of the valley and La Fortuna and the back porch (which is sort of enclosed with a half wall all around it and glass/plexiglass panels on the side, looked directly at Arenal Volcano.
There was a restaurant on site that included breakfast each morning. Lunch and breakfast was available throughout the day and evening. Breakfast was good, but was the same every morning as they didn't change up what was available. The menu for lunch and dinner is quite large and pricing ranged from $15-$35 for the dinner entrees. The burger I had at lunch one day was very good. There is also a bar next to the restaurant that had happy hour each day from 5pm-7pm. They had a menu where you could have drink specials. 2-for-1 cocktails were $8, 2-for-1 beers were $6 and 2-for-1 wine was $10.
The overall facility is quite large and has lots of pathways and walkways. There is even a small hiking trail above the hotel that takes you through farmland and then the forest. It doesn't look like it's used a lot, but the trail is easy to follow. The pool is quite large and the hot tub is under a gazebo. The odd thing we found at the pool was, other than the gazebo, there were no other shaded areas or umbrellas for shade (or rain).
The hotel is located a couple of miles from La Fortuna (and up the hill) so the best way to get to town is to take a cab (which costs $6 each way). The hotel can arrange this. It's probably a bit awkward to walk to and from town from the hotel. The hotel can also arrange a number of different tours if you don't already have tours booked. The pricing seemed to be in line with what we paid when we pre-booked ours.
Overall, we were happy with the hotel and it seemed like it was a better choice than our originally booked hotel. Would stay here again if visiting Arenal area again.
