We didn't stay at Los Lagos, but we got to check out the grounds and eat at the restaurant as part of a tour we went on. The grounds were SO PRETTY!! It's the kind of place you go to stay and don't even have to leave the hotel to find amazing things. They have a butterfly house, crocodiles, and of course - the geothermal pools!

The locker/towel system is a little silly - you have to pay them a $10 deposit for a towel, and they give you back all but $1 when you return it... but we only got 15$ from our 2 towels.... I just say "eh, keep it as tip" rather than bother question it.

We had a pleasant 3 night, 4 day stay at Los Lagos Hotel Spa & Resort. Arrived late in the afternoon and were greeted by a smile at the front desk. Reservation was located immediately and received helpful information about the hotel and spa areas. Spent the remainder of the afternoon in the hot springs fed by the water of Volcano Arenal. The spring pools, of which there are many, are very enjoyable, clean and inviting. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was less than impressive the first night. Food of mediocre quality and over priced. Dinners improved the following two nights with the buffet offerings. Much better than off the menu. Stayed in what is called a superior room which was quite adequate although the air conditioning unit was poor. Bed quality, linens, and pillows all very good. Overall this is a pleasant hotel and spa and a good place to stay when visiting Volcano Arenal and La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with Volcano views.

The property is top notch, but very big!

Great pools and gardens.

Main reason for 3 stars is because everything shuts down at 10pm. All restaurants and bars close then. So if u want to stay up later you have to go into La Fortuna via taxi. Then when you get back there are no more shuttles to bring you back to your room. The walk from the front gate to our room was at least 30 minutes all uphill

This was the first hotel of the 3 we experienced in Costa Rica. We have 2 teenage boys, and this hotel was their favorite because of the pools and water slides. The grounds are beautiful and the service provided by the hotel was all we could ask for. The response to our late-night phone call regarding our clogged toilet was immediate. The rooms were large and comfortable, although nothing spectacular. Air conditioning worked well in each room. We did not experience any bugs in our room, although I think that has something to do with us visiting Arenal at the end of the dry season. The shuttle bus came to our room within 5 minutes every time except once when it took about 15 minutes. We did walk sometimes (the kids preferred to walk even when the van was there), although it became too tiring for my wife and myself after a while - it is a steep walk!

Breakfast was very good and had OJ, coffee (duh), tea, rice, beans, fruit, eggs however you like, and more. It was actually more breakfast than my family needs. Since we were still trying to figure out everything about Costa Rica and our trip, we asked a lot of dumb questions at the from desk. They were patient, and tried their best to give us good answers. Most of the front desk people spoke good enough English, and I can't say they were super-friendly, but they were courteous enough for us. Van drivers were very pleasant, friendly and eager to help with everything, although a few spoke no English at all.

I would definitely recommend Los Lagos if you have kids who like pools and slides.

I recently stayed at Los Lagos Resort with three other friends. We all enjoyed the resort and had a good experience. We stayed two nights in a superior room, had 2 breakfast and 2 dinner experiences there. We also booked a canopy tour through them.

The Room:
As I said, we stayed in a superior room. The room had 2 queen beds that were both comfortable. Good air condition, 32'' tv, a desk, coffee maker, plenty of cabinet space, small refrigerator and a good size bathroom. The room was big, really big. So big, the 32'' tv on the wall looked rather small. The room had a good view of the volcano out the front door as well as a good view on the back patio. You have to leave a room key in the "power slot" inside your room to have power. So we ended up leaving a key in there most of the time because we wanted the refrigerator to keep running while we were gone.

The grounds:
The grounds are huge and there is a lot to see. We had a vehicle, so anytime we left from out room to go anywhere else on the property we drove. It was probably a 5 minute drive either way from our room to the dining/pool area. There is a 4x4 trail that goes up to a scenic overlook of the volcano that is fun to drive or hike. The grounds are gorgeously manicured.

The hot springs:
There are several (about 8ish) hot springs to choose from as well as swimming pools. There are 4 different slides (be careful some of them can sling you around pretty hard.) But the hot springs closer to the main pool are definitely kept up better than the springs higher up. Do keep your eye out for critters as we had a small snake swim through one of the springs we were in. Overall, there springs are nice. I've been to some of the other really expensive springs around and would just assume use these.

The dining:
The two breakfasts we had were good. Gallo pinto, eggs, pancakes, fruit, yogurt, granola, and more. The dinner buffets were good as well. We were not disappointed either evening.

The canopy tour:
We did the canopy tour, and I must say it was my favorite of the 3 different tours I've done since living in Costa Rica. (Truth be told, I might have enjoyed the one in Monteverde most, had it not been pouring down rain the entire time). The cables were good, and the tour offered some greats views. The guides were fun and knowledgable.

Overall, it was a very good experience and I would recommend staying at Los Lagos to anyone.

This is a kid friendly resort with pools & water slides. On site is a butterfly sanctuary, croc & croc farm, fish pond, zip lining & horseback riding
The standard room is small with the bed taking up most of the room. The pull out cot is very hard & uncomfortable. On the other hand the bathroom is very spacious Upgrade to the superior room which is large & beautiful
The villas are spread out & a lot of times up the hill. There is a shortcut to the pool & restaurant but also a shuttle available at any time.
If you want quiet, walk past the pool & bar up to the top. Combo hot spring & pool with a resident iguana.
Taxis to town $8. Go to a soda for food. Tico type meal. Try soda viquez. The casado with either fish, chicken or beef is delicious and so affordable. ( sea bass, 5 sides for $5 us!!)
Bring a small flashlight for the paths at night & a face cloth or shower scrunchie.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

Room Tip: Room 237 has a beautiful view of the volcano & close to the shortcut to the pool.

Although the view was spectacular and the grounds were pretty, we had a huge swarm of insects which infested our room (Room 124 in case you stay there) shortly after the sun went down. This was not just a bug or two - it was a SWARM, coming through some rotten wood just over our shower stall. They may have been termites, but we couldn't tell for sure. After trying to swat them, we called the desk. They were prompt in sending a maintenance person with a can of bug spray. When she opened the bathroom door, all the bugs started flying out, getting in the bed, on the lamps, in our hair, etc. The poor lady refused to even go into the bathroom with the spray. I called the desk and demanded another room (this was at 10 PM). I was told "Ma'm you are in the jungle and there are bugs here. We don't have any other rooms. At that point I went ballistic, told them that their response was unacceptable, and that they would be reported. Next thing you know, we were moved to another room. This was a bad, bad, bad situation.

Room Tip: Don't let them give you Room 124 unless you check for bugs first/
