“Awesome Resort for Families!”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

We stayed at Los Lagos June 2013 for a week and enjoyed every moment. My kids absolutely loved the water slides. They are unlike anything in the US. They have two slides that dump into the cold water springs and one that dumps into the big hot springs pool that has the swim up bar. Free breakfast buffet was great...the kids and my husband ate a ton and then we headed to the pool for some relaxation or onto an excursion. The sun didn't come out too often, but that's too be expected for June. The bugs were manageable with bug spray. I'm usually a HUGE mosquito magnet and I didn't get a single bite as long as I used the spray. That's even with going to the hanging bridges, going on a safari float, and zip lining in the rainforest. There was so much to do there! Our room was up high in the hills so we used the hotel shuttle a lot to go back and usually walked down on our own in the morning. We had a view of the volcano which was awesome when the visibility allowed you to see it. We did have some issues with these huge flying insects in our room especially after a rain storm. They started coming out of the TV, but they didn't bother us. My husband and kids hiked a little closer to the volcano one night. The shuttle was typically prompt...there were a couple times we waited 15-20 minutes. We had dinner several times in the hotel's restaurant and it was quite good. Our waiter was awesome! We would stay here again in a heart beat....it's now become the standard to which my kids hold all other hotels to especially when it comes to the water slides.

My husband and I were able to spend a few hours at this hotel after a white water rafting tour. The hot springs were amazing. They're like nothing we've seen before. These are literally coming down from the volcano and are built into the hillside. And the pools have the most hilarious waterslides. We were like little kids cracking up going down them. It's much more laid back than the U.S., which takes some getting use to. You don't see lifeguards, helicopter moms, or floaties anywhere. We both said that if were came back to Costa Rica, we would definitely want to stay at this hotel. There is just so much to do and see.

We were on our honeymoon, this was the first of three places we went in Costa Rica, and the first time either of us had stayed at a hotel. The resort seemed moire for families than couples, would have appreciated some adult only areas. The room was odd - big, but poorly laid out, not many places to put toiletries or clothes, and it was very moist and mildewy with windows in the bathroom that did not easily shut. you had to leave a room key in to keep the ac on which was a pain. breakfast was decent, the hike to see the Arenal volcano and just the little walks around the spectacularly manicured grounds were very nice - butterfly enclosure, frogs, ants and GATORS! Monkeys close by and heard early in the morning which some complained about but we did not mind. The hot springs pool and bar was pretty freaking awesome - and the waterslides were fun.

Room Tip: we werent too far from the pool/restaurant/lobby so we had a reasonable walk to and from the room...

We spent 4 nights at this resort and really enjoyed it.
The rooms are on a hill so if you book one of those with a view be prepared to walk or wait for the shuttle. We had a superior room, which has two rollaway beds underneath each queen bed, so you could sleep 6 in this room if needed.
Again, on a hill and our room was at the top so we walked a couple of times down and shuttled up always.
Great pools, each of varying degrees of temperature & water slides.
Hot springs are up the hill above the pools and are really hot.
We found ourselves heading back to the very warm pools rather quickly, but it was nice to try.
The buffet breakfast was great. My 9yr old son loved having 3 fried eggs freshly cooked to order each morning. Pancakes, fruit, yogurt and more. A true buffet.
Lunch & dinner are a little pricey when you eat at the resort.
But once you get back from an excursion (canopy tour, river rafting, horseback riding, etc) it's nice to have a place to eat and then jump in the pool(s).
If you walk around the resort they have a frog pond, butterfly garden & even some crocodiles behind the fence. We were yelled at by some howler monkeys from up in the trees when walking around this area (below/behind the restaurant).
We booked a canopy tour & white water rafting through the resort. Both were great, but the class 2/3 river rafting was the highlight excursion of the trip. Little pricey, $65 each, but that included a stop halfway down the fiver & the guides cutting up tons of fresh pineapple & watermelon for all of us. After we completed the river tour they took us to lunch, which was also great.
We booked the taxi-boat-taxi to Monteverde as the next place we were staying at (house actually) was known by the guys we booked that through. Plus it was $8 or $10 dollars (can't remember exactly) cheaper, per person, booking it on our own. So that was nice.
The bonus of booking trips through the resort though is they'll handle any problems you have on your trip(s).
We had to wait an hour for a driver to pick us up after horseback riding to the waterfall. Since this was the responsibility of the horseback riding company, Los Lagos called up & complained & we received a partial refund on the trip.
I doubt I would have gotten that had I booked it on my own. So you might pay more booking it through them but at least you have someone to fight for you if something goes wrong like we did.
The only downside of the resort is the location. If you don't have a car, like us, then you'll be reluctant to get a taxi (I was told $10 each way) for the 12 minute ride to town.
Thus we ate most meals at the resort. Food was good, not great, but good. I personally enjoyed the typical and my kids loved the spaghetti (not on the menu) & burgers.

Keep in mind the volcano is no longer active, so you won't see lava running down the side at night nor will you hear the mountain grumble as it used to as well.

If we go back to La Fortuna it would be hard not to stay here again. Our kids loved the pools/slides and the views are great. If it was closer to town I'd be giving it 5 out of 5. As it is, it's more a 4 1/2.

Room Tip: Superior rooms had 2 rollaway beds in addition to the 2 queen beds.

After spending a couple weeks on the beaches of Sámara in the hot sun, Arenal was a welcomed change of climate and scene. It was a beautiful drive, very lush and green.

While we heard Los Lagos wasn't the absolute best hot springs in the area, it came recommended and we were not disappointed. There were 2 regular swimming pools each with a water slide that dropped of in it, a huge heated/hot springs swim up bar area also with a water slide as well as a couple underwater seating areas (much like a hot tub) with an adjoining cooler temperature pool and space and chairs for sitting outside of the water, and a "kids'" hot springs pool with a smaller slide, seating, waterfall feature, and tables. Beyond these areas there were also 5 other cooler/hotter hot springs pools as well as a three tiered hot tub/pool area. Needless to say, no matter how busy the place got it always felt like there was room and a place to escape to if you wanted privacy.

It addition to the hot springs they have zip lining on the property (my husband and some friends participated in it and loved it). It was only $50 for a 2 hour tour and 8 runs. What a deal!!! They also had other excursions and activities as well as places to visit for free like a butterfly tent, an ant farm, a frog area and different sorts of crocodiles (maybe alligators) to look at (don't worry, they are caged)!!

The breakfast was included with our room and it was delicious and well worth it!

The room was a bit pricey (though compared to US prices not so much), but since it included breakfast and the hot springs it was worth it!

They also have a shuttle that takes you around the property from your room to the hot springs or wherever for free. It is a great feature so you don't have to drive around or try to hike the hills (especially if you are staying at the rooms furthest from everything, which we were - we were in room 201).

The hotel is also within a 10-15 minute drive from Fortuna. We didn't really get a chance to check out this city but it looked exciting. If we would have had more time to spare we would have spent some time here. In any case, it is a great option for dining and shopping! It had tons of restaurants and cafes as well as shops. We drove to town to pick up some items at the supermarket.

This is a great place for kids, adults, singles, families...everyone! The service was terrific and it was overall a very fun, active and relaxing place.

Room Tip: There is a house (rooms 401 & 402) available to rent if you are traveling with a family and want...

After spending 4 days in Manzanillo during the rainy season, we needed to dry out and relax.
This was a great spot. Even at $200 a night for a large, superior room -- this included the hot springs, which would have run us $20 a person, so the rooms were really about $140 a night. We couldn't book a room online -- the booking site said there were no vacancies, so we called and they had a room, but we needed to show up and check in -- they couldn't book us manually. So we traveled 4.5 hours and sure enough, once we got there, we were able to get a room with no problem.
The hot springs were man-made pools fed by the springs. Their water slides were super fast and fun. The pools were very pretty, the gardens were gorgeous, and the bar was right there, so you could sit in the water and drink or watch sports on the TV up high on the wall. The guy in our group was a little sports-starved, so he really appreciated that. You could climb out and enjoy a nice meal -- my fajita was excellent. I would go here again and will recommend it to my friends.

We arrived late at night and were disappointed at the state of the shower and the fact the toilet didn't work properly. We'd asked for two adjoining rooms and that seemed to be a hiccup as they didn't have adjoining rooms and so gave us the one that wasn't up to the mark.
Everything was ironed out the next morning and we got a room and bathroom to our liking.
The rooms were spacious and the beds were the best in Costa Rica and we really liked them.
The buffet was good, the gardens immaculate, the ambience great.
We enjoyed our stay here.
Everyone worked so hard to take such good care of us.
The cleanliness rating got a three only because of the first night.

Room Tip: Ask and you shall receive. Don't put up with less than what you expect.
