There five adults and two children (7& 4) we stayed in the villa and it was a very nice place and had beautiful views in every direction. The resort was very family friendly all you had to do was call the front desk and they would send a shuttle to pick you up and take you to the pool. They actually had several pools. Some were regular pool water and some hot springs. The hot spring pool had a swim up bar with several stools available for seating. The resort was very well maintained and a beautiful place to stay. They even had there own look out point at which you could drive up to (4 wheel drive recommended) and view the Arenal volcano. The food was not the best and since there were so many of us we did order a wide variety so we felt like we had a pretty good since of the quality. We found several SODA's (restaurants in Costa Rica) that had much better food so the only time we ate there was the first night we arrived. Several slides in the pools that the 7 year old grand son absolutely loved. I think that might have been his favorite part of the entire vacation. The location was good just a few minute drive in one direction and we were at La Fortuna where there were several things to do and in the other direction was the hanging bridges.

My family had a great 3 night stay at Los Lagos! My kids (age 6 & 8) LOVED the water slides, pools, hot springs, and amenities!

Pros:
-very clean: from the rooms to the grounds, lobby area and restaurant.
-great pool area, water slides and a good variety of hot springs.
-breakfast buffet was delicious every morning, will miss the homemade tortillas! We also had dinner a couple of nights and the food was very good.
-excellent service: wait staff, front desk and concierge. The converter helped us decide what trips would be the best fit for our family and made all of our reservations.

Cons:
-the wifi is only available in the lobby, wet bar area (I was never able to connect there) and restaurant (also never able to connect there), even in the lobby was not always able to connect if there were too many others in there online. I know it's vacation and not necessary but I did miss being able to connect with the world!
-the rooms: we booked a standard room and it did not even include a coffee maker (for $179 a night I would have liked a cup of coffee when I woke up). The beds were VERY hard and uncomfortable. Also would have liked some kind of seating besides the beds. All in all not that important as we didn't spend much time in the rooms.
-lost electricity on 2 of the days we were there for a couple of hours each time. Weather is not in their control so maybe not entirely to blame but being stuck in a pitch black room with scared kids is not fun!

All in all I totally recommend this hotel and will definitely return in the future!

* if you are looking for tours with kids I HIGHLY recommend the cano negro trip and a half day volunteer experience at proyecto asis.

There was quite a good range of food on offer - lots of salad, you could make your own beef fajitas, there was a creamy chicken thing. The only pour aspect was the desserts, they ran out of chocolate cake by 8pm and the other puddings were uninspiring.

For a buffet it was good, but it was still a buffet which is never where you would expect to find good food!

We stayed at the Los Lagos Resort for 2 nights and these were by far the nicest nights we spent. The other homes, and hotels were average in Costa Rica and I am glad this was our last place to visit as the kids would've been disappointed had we started off our trip here first.
The hotel has a wonderful hot springs pool fed by the volcano which was still smoking as close as you could possibly imagine being. They have a fish/koi pond and a wonderful walk through garden full of flowers and fauna and a toothless croccodile! The poison dart frogs were also in an enclosure and easier to sport by the kids since they were ground level and tiny! All of this was included in the price. We opted for the breakfast package which was well worth the cost. The resort is safe and staffed by security - the only thing it did not have was wireless service-He had to go to reservation to access it there or use there computers.
The rooms were spacious the beds had pull out beds and our room easily accommodated 8 persons. We had a nice porch to sit on...and directly behind us was a zipline course the hotel had on premesis if you wanted to do it. They also offered horse back riding to the volcano.

This was our second time staying at Los Lagos at the request of our daughter who remembered it so fondly from our first trip. The waterslides and pools are topnotch - great for adults and kids alike. Who wouldn't like a giant hot tub with a waterslide and swim up bar? We also took the horseback riding tour to the volcano which I highly recommend, and drove ourselves to the La Fortuna waterfall for a hike and a look at the beautiful waterfall and pools there. The rooms appear like they were decorated in the 1970's, which is interesting considering the hotel wasn't even built until 2000, but whatever. After eco lodges and staying in small boutique hotels where our kids were the only kids there, it was nice to be in a place where kids rule. And if you don't want to be around kids, don't come here. I think everyone had some, lots of Costa Rican families and also youth tour groups from the US. But all the kids were behaving--they were in pool heaven after all!

We stayed as Los Lagos for 2 nights at the end of June. First let me say that the property grounds are beautiful. They have a frog house, butterfly house, leaf-cutter ant house, and crocodile area to explore while walking the trails. If you rent a car and have a 4x4 be sure to drive up to the volcano observation point, the view is wonderful. We stayed in room #232 and has the most amazing view from our back porch of the volcano!!! Absolutely breathtaking. Every morning we would get up early and sit on the porch watching the horses on the hill, the birds, and the volcano. The room we had was a Superior room and had 2 queen beds with rollaway twin beds underneath, a large bathroom with a jacuzzi tub/shower combo, and a front & back porch. The entry into the room made it feel larger and had a huge cabinet for storage. The only complaint I have about the room is the beds, they were so hard!! Another reviewer mentioned water in the bathrooms. We had the same problem the first night, what we ended up doing is taking a shower with the door open so condensation didn't build up on the tile walls and pool on the floor. If you don't there is no way for the steam to get out and you will end up with puddles on the bathroom floor. Our a/c was not working properly but after a visit to the front desk on the way out for dinner it was fixed and blowing cold air by the time we got back. Our experience with customer service was great! The kids were thankful for the wifi in the reception area, breakfast was served buffet style and each day had a couple different options. The tortillas are made right there in front of you and very delicious! One night we had a drink at the swim up bar, so relaxing. The hot spring pool at the very top is the hottest and has a cold pool right next to it. The view from there is also spectacular. During the day locals will come use the facilities so it does get a little busy on the weekend. Our stay was on a Sunday and Monday. Sunday the pool was busy but on Monday the property was very quiet and relaxing. Make sure to go into town and eat at soda La Parada (across from the park) or soda La Hormiga (by the Mega Super & bus station), the later was our favorite. We also got ice cream from POP's, yummy and right on the main street. Los Lagos is in a great location, far enough away from La Fortuna to feel like you're away from it all but close enough to go into town for dinner. The drive to the national park is only about 15-20min and add about 5 minutes to get to Hanging Bridges.

Note on room location: The Superior rooms are further away from the pool/springs and breakfast area. They offer a shuttle but we didn't use it since we drove a rental car. This could be a problem for some. We thought it was totally worth the view and it didn't bother us to drive down for breakfast or to use the pool. We did make sure to bring a flashlight since the walk to our room wasn't lit very well and we learned after the first night to NOT leave the porch light on. If you do expect a lot of bugs in front of your door and on the porch!!! Yuck.

The kids and hubby had a blast going down the 3 water slides while I enjoyed the hot springs!

Room Tip: Any room in the 230 range is going to give you an outstanding view of the volcano! We were in room...

The grounds and the trails are the reason to stay here. Incredible view, the trails are fantastic. The rooms are poor. Our bathroom was graded poorly and the water would leak to the room everyday. The air conditioning leaked too and drenched one of our bags. The front desk is unfriendly. I don't know how this compares with other area hotels. The restaurant is good. Service is good. Best tortillas and timbales I have ever eaten!!
