“A wonderful place to relax and a great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013

This place is a real gem! I came here for the day with my spouse and friends to enjoy the great hot baths coming directly from the volcano some distance away. It was just like Paradise! the baths are in their natural environment and they are completely integrated in a beautiful lush vegetation setting with a lot of beautiful bright and colorful flowers you can only encounter in the wild vegetation of Northern Queensland or Hawaï. After spending some time in these beautiful hot baths full of trace elements, you just feel rejuvenated completely and if you had muscular pains and aches, they are all gone. It is just like a dream! The hotel pool has the same natural waters from the volcano. Everything is spotlessly clean and the food they serve at the restaurant is very fresh and well prepared. If you chhoose the buffet, there is a lot of choice, everything is excellent! The pastries are also very fine.

Thank you for sharing your comments with us. Our aim is always to improve and provide our guests a high quality service, Tabacon sits over 872 acres of lush rainforest and all our thermal springs comes from the majestic Arenal Volcano forming cascades and natural pools through the property, we keep nature as an integrated part of Tabacon experience. We are pleased that you enjoyed our food selection at Ave del Paraíso restaurant where every single night there's a international theme buffet to share with our guest the most delicious dishes during their stay. We look forward for your next visit.

Great rooms with a view of a volcano outside the french windows. A huge moth "lived" by the front door, and other bugs and creatures were around. 200 yards to the warm water pools and waterfalls - definitely a unique experience.

This cost more than we usually pay, but you get entrance into the pools that are otherwise pricey. We did not pay for anything else - lots of restaurants in La Fortuna to choose from.

The only downside is the staff are too attentive. They took our car and parked it outside our room and insisted we wait for golf cart to drive us - we can walk 50 yards! Welcome drinks were good, even though our hands were full at the time. Very professionally run hotel. Internet was fine.

A friend of us recommended us going to Arenal because of those great hot springs, so we searched our perfect hotel for staying 3 days there. Arrived at the small arenal airport (getting to arenal with Nature Air), a transport was waiting for us (which was already organised and paid earlier). They way from the airport to the hotel was around 30 minutes and there weren't any problems. The check-in was perfectly fast and problem-free. One of our 2 tabacon suites was ready at around 2 and the other (like usual) at 3 pm, so we were advised to get a small snack at the restaurant near the reception.

Entered in one of our two tabacon suites, we were amazed. The rooms are HUUUUUGE, and so gorgeous. There you have a jacuzzi-bathtube, in which you could site with another person, a huge kingsize bed and a sofabed (if you are 3 persons in the room, they open you the sofabed, which is also pretty comfortable). You won't have any balcony - but your view is awesome, directly into the rainforest.

My two childrens were so nervous and ready going into the hot springs, so we ordered a car to the hot springs which is around 5 min to walk and 1 min to drive. There you have your heaven! so many hot springs, restaurants and poolbar - i swear you it's heaven! :-)

If you want to stay in your hotel, there is one hot spring-pool as well. Of course it's not as big as the other hot spring area, because there you only have a pool and a small whirlpool behind - but it's nice as well. You'll get fresh cool water and towels there.

We enjoyed our 3 days in the Tabacon Hotel so much. It's just heaven and you should totally visit it!!!

Room Tip: If you prefer a spacious and magnificent room, you should definitely take a tabacon suite (which is...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

My husband and I arrived at Tabacon on May 8, on the second-leg of our First Wedding Anniversary trip through Costa Rica. Friends of ours had stayed here for their Honeymoon in Sept. 2010 and raved about it so we thought we'd give it a try. I have no negatives to state about our stay; everything was wonderful!!

We had previously been in Manuel Antonio and rented a car for our week-long trip. It was about a 4.5 hour drive from Manuel Antonio to Arenal but it was a cool experience to be driving through the countryside! From San Jose airport it would only be about a 2.5-3 hour drive, FYI. We rented from VAMOUS and had a wonderful experience. My husband had been stressed trying to decide who to rent from because we read a lot of negative reviews but we didn't have a single problem and I would highly recommend them.

We arrived around 1 p.m. so we ate lunch in the lobby bar until our room was ready (check-in was at 3). They kept our bags locked in a room for us so we could venture down to the pool/Hot Springs and didn't have to lug everything down there. Lunch was delish!! The Pool/Hot Springs are a 5-minute walk away or there is a shuttle that is constantly running. The walk was fine though, very easy. The hot springs are beautiful, so relaxing....and incredibly maintained. The pool bar had a great selection of tropical drinks as well as a small food menu (the sliders were awesome). All of the bar tenders are very friendly and provide great customer service.

The adults-only section of the Springs, Shangri-La, was so peaceful and pretty. We went back there one day to nap in the little lounge huts they have and it was so quiet and comfortable. There's even another bar back there, which was cool.

We booked massages in the Spa for 5 p.m. one evening and it was amazzzzing. The massages are given in these small huts that are surrounded by the hot springs- it's so beautiful. There's no need for spa music; the sounds of the springs will relax you. We were both highly impressed with how beautiful the spa was and how amazing the staff was. Definitely treat yourself to a spa service while you are there, you will not regret it.

We did not eat breakfast at the hotel, we had a car so we went into town and tried little hole-in-the-wall places for a lot cheaper and the food was great! If you like to experience the culture I recommend doing that.

We did eat at the buffet 2 nights and it was excellent! There is a different theme every night and we were highly satisfied both times. (One night was Costa Rican cuisine and one night was Mexican). Both were so yummy! We never made it to the Los Tucanes restaurant so I can't comment on that.

The rooms were beautiful. Very clean, spacious and very comfortable beds. Our air conditioning broke one evening but the staff came by to fix it within an hour and it was fine! The turn-down service in the evenings was a nice touch!

We did not book any activities through the resort, we did it on our own. We hiked Cerro Chato and it takes about a total of 4 hours to do so. It was strenuous but not outrageously hard. If you are in generally good health and enjoy the outdoors there's no reason you couldn't hike it too (I am not an outdoorsy girl and even I was fine). The hike starts at the Arenal Observatory Lodge (about a 10 min drive from Tabacon) and costs $10/person (I think...not 100% sure of that). There is a breakfast buffet available there until 8:30 p.m. for $8/person which we took advantage of before the hike. There are maps of the trails/hikes available to you also and they were very easy to follow. Some people hired guides for the hike but we didn't think it was necessary. If you're up for some adventure I'd say give it a shot!

No complaints at all about Tabacon. It was a beautiful resort and a wonderful and relaxing time. I recommend to anyone who wants to feel pampered, sun-kissed and refreshed on their vacation!

Tabacon was amazing, our favorite of the three resorts we stayed at during our trip to Costa Rica. Great service, very nice clean rooms, comfortable bed, wonderful hot springs resort. We spent as much time in the hot springs as we could, it was fun to explore the resort and find all of the pools. Staying here is worth the money! Booking activities through the hotel was more expensive than booking through guides in town, but the Volcano park hiking tour we booked through Tabacon was great.

Tabacon was very accommodating as they allowed us to check in early prior to departing on an all day tour and returning in the evening. Typical check in time is 4pm, but they went ahead and checked us in at 8am. Their staff was also very helpful in fixing a few things that went wrong with our room. When we first got to the room, the front door came off of a hinge. Repairmen were there in 5 minutes and fixed the door. The staff also brought chocolates by as a way of saying “Sorry for the inconvenience.” Another time our smoke detector decided to go on the fritz. We called the front desk, and again 5 minutes later repairmen were there to fix the issue. The Tabacon staff did a very good job ensuring our satisfaction. The bathroom is large with a step up tub. Our room also had a sliding glass door with a great view of Arenal Volcano. The A/C controls are a bit weird and takes some tinkering to get it set to the right temperature. Each room also comes with slippers and robe for your use during your stay.

The thermal springs are located 300m away from the hotel that you can walk, but we decided to take the shuttle each time. You can call the front desk and have the shuttle pick you up from your room or you can walk down to the front desk to catch it. The shuttles run every few minutes from the resort back to the hotel and if one doesn’t show up, just talk with the staff at the front desk of the resort and they’ll make sure a shuttle arrives shortly. The pool bar at the resort features a waterslide. Be aware that the pool bar doesn’t have a gradual decline to change depths in the pool, but steps. A little weird and if you’re not paying attention, you could stub your toe or the sudden drop while drinking in the pool can surprise you. However, the pool bar has an amazing view of the volcano. The biggest feature of the resort is the thermal river that runs through the property. It is one of only two resorts that relies solely on the natural flow of the river for its hot springs whereas other resorts have to pump the water up to a different location. Make sure to wander the property during the day and take advantage of the several pools and waterfalls throughout the property. You’re likely to see some wildlife as well as you wander the property since the resort is integrated very well with the surrounding rainforest. At the upper part of the resort property is Shangri-La, which is an adult only area. They have beds, hammocks, couches, a grassy knoll, and a bar. It’s a nice escape from the main area of the resort to get some peace and quiet and there are several thermal pools located there. If you’re a guest of the hotel, you get a free locker and towel. The lockers are a bit small as is the changing room, but there are several showers available and a bathing suit water extractor. This was the only facility that had a water extractor and is great if you don’t want to pack a wet suit in your bag. The bathrooms for the changing room are located past the showers.

The spa is very nice. They offer a free smoothie with every treatment. The spa features only one small thermal pool in the main spa area. I thought they would have a cool water pool as well like other spas, but they only had one that would really only fit two people comfortably. The treatment rooms are open-air “rooms” that are isolated and integrated with the surrounding jungle. When my therapist came to get me and escort me to the treatment room, we seemed to walk further and further into the jungle before we stopped. I didn’t realize the property went so far into the jungle. The therapist would check occasionally if the pressure she was applying during the massage was good or not. Best massage ever! Each treatment room also has its own Jacuzzi tub. After your treatment, you can spend as much time in the main spa area to relax as you wish.

Los Tucanes, found on the hotel part of the property, serves breakfast lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet is a bit steep, so we ordered the “Typical Costa Rican Breakfast.” I would have thought an establishment like Tabacon would use more imagination in naming their breakfast dishes. I really think they should rename their breakfast choices to “Traditional Costa Rican Breakfast” and Traditional American Breakfast.” The food was delicious nonetheless. Dinner was also amazing. They offered an amuse-bouche, palate cleanser, and light dessert as compliments of the kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious. The Goat Cheese mousse and King Crab Cake appetizers were to die for. We decided to stick with a seafood theme and ordered the prawns, scallops, and mahi mahi—AMAZING! Each dish comes with a starch side and a sauce. We tried the fried yucca, truffle fries, and organic green beans with chorizo—I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the choices. Get the servers recommendation on sauces, as we had no clue which sauce would pair best with our dishes. We eyed the dessert menu, but were too full to order anything. That’s when the kitchen sent out a light dessert for each of us, which was just what we were looking for.

We also participated in the private bungalow Gala Dinner. This is a four course gourmet dinner with a private chef and server. Absolutely amazing! The bungalow is set in the jungle where you can see and hear the local wildlife. Lightning bugs were dancing around us during our dinner, which made the experience fantastic. They place rose petals on and around the table for a very intimate setting.

Fantastic resort and experience!

If Eve hadn't eaten that apple, Tabacon Hot Springs is what the world would look like and Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort is where God would put up guests from out of town. When you first arrive and enter the tropical feeling open air lobby you are handed a cold towel for your refreshment and an icy drink in a stemmed glass, and this is the point where you hear the first strum on angels' harps. By some miraculous fluke, we ended up in a King Tabacon Suite -- our luggage delivered to the door by cart -- and when the floor-to-ceiling drapes were pulled aside and we could look across the jungle to see the full frontal view of Arenal, the heavenly choirs began to sing. The room itself was magnificent. It was enormous with soaring ceilings and an unobstructed view of jungle and Volcano. Several times during the night I got up just to watch the moonlight on the shifting jungle mists and on Arenal. It was unforgettable. The four poster bed with curtains is most comfortable and has the whole angel-down works: pillows, comforter and heavenly soft sheets and duvet. Robes. Spa slippers. Luxury amenities. Handsome wooden boxes, one of tea selections and the other of coffees. Couch, huge TV, work desk, dining table and chairs, and enough space to accommodate all of this without crowding. Ah! and the bathroom? There was a tub large enough for a birthday party with a "rainforest" shower head and windows that opened wide to jungle views. Don't ask how this was private, but it was. A TV in the bathroom, for heaven's sake. For the tech demons among us, theTV came with BlueRay, and BlueTooth. There was a laptop computer on the desk and a great internet connection.....so if you really, really had to maintain contact back down on earth, you could. In the evening, turn down service also includes a refill of your ice bucket, slippers appear bedside, and of course, what would heaven be without that piece of chocolate? Service throughout the resort was so accommodating that If it would have made us happy to have the staff jump back flips, I believe they would have. When we first arrived at our room, we found a beautiful cake on the dining table wishing us a happy anniversary -- our 47th. How great is that? The pool was being renovated but it was the hot springs we were most interested in. It is a short (6 minutes), pleasant walk away on a paved garden path that parallels the highway but feels tropical and a nice experience in itself. The hotel will shuttle you but I preferred the walk.. At night, the path is lighted and makes a nice little stroll after a day spent at the springs. I peeped into the standard rooms and found them to be more similar to a standard hotel room, although they were handsomely furnished and had full length jungle views out the window at the end of the room. If cost is an issue, consider that the room price includes a day pass to the springs and for two people, that would be $120 per day so you can mentally knock that off the price of the room and what remains is certainly not unreasonable. The restaurant deserves a review of its own, as does the Springs complex, so look for these on TripAdvisor as well.

Room Tip: As usual, you get what you pay for. Suites are larger, have views of Arenal and more luxury ameniti...
