We stayed there one night to be able to use the hotsprings. Rooms are expensive and you don't get breakfast included like all of the other hotels offered. There were many rules such as you couldn't drive your car to your room yourself. Or we were told to sit down in the lobby and wait to be called to check in (not before 4PM even if a room was ready at 2 PM). When we checked in they handed us a letter saying, oh by the way we are working on the electricity tomorrow and there will be only TV and computer after 8 AM. No airconditioning when it iwas almost 100 degrees and no conpensation offers either. The free warm juice and wet towel did not take away the bad taste of the 2 irritable check-in people we met and the letter but the hot springs were lovely. To be fair, all of the men driving the vans to the rooms and the pool were very friendly and the bed was very comfortable.

Room Tip: Look on discount sites for a special and spend one night here and the other nights in a user friendl...

We stayed in a brand new suite and it was 5 stars, par with four-seasons experience. the thermals are the highlight of the visit. Take a hike around the volcano and visit the town to see the Volcano up close in a clear day. Food is pricey but everything around is a tourist-milking machine. The place is good for 2-3 day experience (be careful driving there, you share the hilly road with Semis, 18-wheelers and Buses and is a 2 lane road)

Room Tip: Make sure you room is renovated and new, otherwise you are going to feel hosed.

We stayed here 1 night because we could get a room for less then paying for a day pass to the hot springs for my family of 4. I stayed here 11 years ago as well and it's changed a lot (gotten bigger, more "resort-y" but the hot springs are beautiful. The room was clean and very nice and the staff is very attentive. If you're looking for a high end resort - this is the one. What I have to call out is my husband left his brand new Go Pro camera laying around the resort not once, but twice (once in a restaurant and once in the lobby) and AMAZINGLY it was returned to us both times. Great attentive staff, thanks for looking out for us.

Room Tip: You won't be in your room much - book the cheapest room you can fit in since you're really s...

We stayed two nights at Tabacon. Arenal in general is absolutely amazing, and the hot springs are the icing on the cake. Absolutely beautiful and one of the most amazing places I have ever been. The hotel on the other hand was kind of a bummer. The rooms were expensive, about $300 a night, and nothing spectacular. The walls are paper thin and both nights we were kept up until all hours of the night with various sounds from our neighbors...let's just say the kids learned some things we were not quite ready to discuss! The buffet was just OK, but super expensive...as were our $16 margaritas. If I had it to do over again, I would find somewhere else to stay but spend the day at the hot springs.

I had high hopes for Tabacon but did not really like it. Perhaps some of the other guest rooms are updated but mine looked/felt VERY old. There was a strong musty/cleaning fluid odor and not any stylish decor in the room. An old, creaky ceiling fan hung down and kept us awake at night. There were very large dead bugs outside in the exterior corridor/steps that were not removed during our 3 day stay. Also, when I called to have my breakfast room service tray removed(10am), they never came. At around 2pm a maid moved it to outside my door and it sat there until after I went to bed. One day, the housekeeping service left a note on my door at 9am saying I'd missed housekeeping service for the day (since I was still asleep at 9am). Ridiculous for a resort in this price range. When I arrived at the hotel around 12:30pm, I was asked to wait an hour to check-in. The grounds at Tabacon are very pretty. The best thing was having the resort pool almost to ourselves because everyone else was at the hot springs. We enjoyed the pretty pool and the lunch and drinks from the poolside restaurant. If you want to save money on breakfast, try ordering room service. The American Breakfast is big enough for two to share. The staff was very nice, overall. No problems there. Overall, I am not sure why this qualifies for Leading Hotel of the World as it just has a feel that is way past it's prime.

Dear KimAtlanta,

Thank you for sharing your comments with us, we are glad you enjoyed our thermal resort which in fact has been recognized as one of the best worldwide, thanks to its exuberant gardens and the natural hot springs river that our guests can enjoy in the middle of the rainforest and also the Hotel pool. We understand you were not impressed by our accomodations, Tabacon offers 7 different room and suites categories all of them with a special design and decoration. We have developed Honeymoon Suites and Rainforest Suites, this second suggestion does have an outdoor terrace and bathroom designed with floor to ceiling glass walls that allows guests to enjoy the rainforest environment. There are also options as our Tabacon Suites and Senator and Ambassador Suites with both a dining and living room area included. We will inform our management about the issues you had with housekeeping service so that we can improve promptly. In regards to the bugs Tabacon sits in the middle of the rainforest that's why you will be able to find some insects near to your rooms. If your travel plans bring you back to Costa Rica, it will be our pleasure to host you again and provide you with services and facilities more appropriate to your personal taste and travel requirements that will include as you know, free access to the unique Tabacon Thermal Resort.

At your service,

We arrived at Tabacon before check in time. We were told we could get into our room in 45minutes. The hotel brought us a welcome drink and we just hung out in the lobby. We had a superior room with two queen beds. It was the least expensive room. We could not see the volcano from our room and there is nothing special about the room. It was on par with a nice Marriott. We ate at the restaurant near the thermal pools. It was a Costa Rican Buffett It was okay. There are not a lot of dining choices at the hotet and they are all very expensive. We had a room service hamburger and turkey sub. It was $60. the Buffett was $35 per person. The drinks at the pool are all about $6. If you are doing tons of tours and not spending time relaxing then maybe stay somewhere else. The real reason to stay here is for the Tabacon Thermal Springs and Spa. The hot springs are the most beautiful and relaxing area I have ever had the pleasure to visit. I thought I had found paradise on earth!! If you are not staying at the resort then it would be $60 a day. With staying at the hotel you can visit any time and for free. The shangralia gardens are for adults only. The beds are amazing. You can pull the shades down and have total privacy. There is a bar in this area too but no frozen drinks. You can walk back to the "normal pool" area for those I cant stress enough that if you are in need of relaxation then the thermal springs at Tabacon is perfect. It was private, not tons of people running around. You also had a nice view of Arenal. I also went to the spa. If you go, ask for Pamela. I had a volcano mud wrap, hot stone massage and then shirodura The spa setting is amazing. You are taken down private paths to your private hut. The hot springs are running by and all the nature sounds are amazing. If you are having more than an hour treatment then ask them to turn off any music playing. I heard the same songs over and over. I think just the nature sounds are more enjoyable. Pamela was very attentive and made sure everything was just right. She really took the time to take care of me. When you arrive at the thermal springs you do need to get a locker key and towels. If you lose either then you have to pay $50. To get to the thermal springs from the hotel you can walk if you are in good shape. It is not the easiest walk. The hotel will shuttle you to and fro at any time. The thermal springs are open from 9am to 10pm every day. At night be careful where you walk. It's lighted but just watch the steps. The hotel pool and spa next to the restaurant are under construction and closed right now. There is a small gym with treadmills but with the Costa Rican terrain I wouldn't bother. So to wrap this up, the hotel room ( superior room) is nothing special but being able to use the thermal pools everyday is worth staying at the Tabacon. I hope we can come back someday.

Gardens were meticulous. Great variety of plants and flowers. Spa was amazing. Lots of different pools and waterfalls were beautiful. Even though there were alot of people there it didn`t feel crowded. The hotel room was very nice. Best bed we had in Costa Rica. Easy to use shuttle bus service was very handy. Everything was clean. The changing room was too crowded. The restaurants were very expensive. We drove back to town to eat.
