First off, let me start by saying while doing my research for our first (of many..hopefully, we will eventually move there!) trips to Costa Rica, I was trying my best to find a day trip to Nicaragua to fit into our tight schedule (I love to cram our vacations full of adventures!). I was having much luck for months, until I saw Agua Trails come up on Facebook, I believe. On their site, it said that they only did the day trip monday, wednesday and friday. The only day we had open was on a thursday. I emailed them anyway. Polle was so accommodating! He said that it could be done on a thursday as long as there were at least three of us (which there were).

Nicaragua (at least the border town that we were in) is quite different than CR. It was really great to cross the border and experience the ways that people live differently than us. Marjorie was our guide when we got to Nicaragua and she showed us around her town with pride. Polle met back with us later on at lunch and then for the ride home again (which was partially traveling down the rio frio across the border). Crossing back over the border to come back into CR felt a little shady, as some guys took us into some hangar, asking us questions and then we still had to go to the immigration office, but that just added to the experience.

It was an amazing day. We got to travel down the river while seeing monkeys, jesus christ lizards, birds, etc., a small town in Nicaragua, little girls doing some traditional dances for us at lunch, and also a stop to see the many iguanas on our way up to the border in the morning.

To top it all off, when Polle dropped us off, we asked him if he could recommend a restaurant in La Fortuna, and drop us off there instead of our hotel. That was no problem at all. My partner actually left his camera in his car. He realized it later on after dinner and we called Polle. He went out of his way later that night to drop it off to at our hotel.

This is a newer company and once they start getting more and more reviews, they will definitely be on top!

This was one of the best value tours we did on our trip! This is an easy way to get to or from one of the less traveled but most beautiful areas of Nicaragua. Polle picked us up personally in Arenal in the morning and drove us to the Los Chiles border. He is super friendly, and we enjoyed our time and the conversation we had with him. On the way we stopped at the Iguana Tree (which was super cool) and he pulled over for a few other photo opportunities. We went through customs (the easiest customs experience I've ever had- took maybe 3 minutes), and then boarded a private boat for a beautiful trip up the river to San Carlos, Nicaragua. On the way we saw monkeys, a Caiman, and many birds. Once in San Carlos, we were met by our tour guide, and were treated to a delicious lunch at a restaurant overlooking the town. There we were enjoyed a private performance from a local cultural dance school, followed by a tour of the town. The tour guide was excellent- super friendly and a great knowledge of San Carlos. At our request, Polle had arranged for our guide to book us two tickets on the public boat to Boca de Sabalos, so our seats were ready and waiting for us. Overall a fantastic value for the trip... would do this again in a hearbeat! Check out some of the other multi-country trips they offer too. We can't wait to visit again!

I had been trying to work out how to get from La Fortuna to Nicaragua and came across Agua Trails. We were picked up around 9am for our hotel and driven to Los Chiles, where our driver sorted out all the customs and immigration paperwork for us. He then dropped us off by the Rio Frio, where we were taken by boat across the border to the Nicaraguan port of San Carlos. During the boat trip we stopped many times to look at monkeys, birds and reptiles. At San Carlos we were met by a representative of Agua Trails who took us through customs/immigration and then to the ferry to buy tickets for the ferry to Ometepe. We left out bags and she took us to the local market to buy some food for the ferry trip. After that we boarded the ferry to Ometepe - which was a enjoyable trip (although it takes 10hrs). The total journey was about 15hrs - but it was really enjoyable, better than being stuck on buses. Agua Trails take all the hassle out of the journey - especially as I didn't speak much Spanish.

I've done the Nicaragua Costa Rica transfer with Agua Trail. Started in San Carlos, we went with the fast boat to Los Chiles. That area is drop dead beautiful! With virtual no tourists, the area is of the beaten track, and it seems like that you have the river for your own. Lots of birds and monkeys, unfortunately no sloths, but the captain was very friendly and he stopped every time something interesting was in sight. The trip was worth the money big times! Arriving at Los Chiles, the kids were playing around in the river. So if you are in La Fortuna and heading for Nicaragua, this route is a very scenic alternative for the bus, and vice versa.
