We booked a double room with ensuite and when we arrived our room was right next to the bar....not ideal when you have jetlag and want to sleep! Luckily they were able to move us to a room further away, which was much better. Rooms are simple, but clean and neat, although the beds are not very comfortable! Nice hammocks in the garden to laze around on and friendly staff who will organise and book tours for you. Good location in town, right next to shops and restaurants, although the town is really lacking many good places to eat. We did eat breakfast at a little cafe 50 meters to the left of the hostel as you walk out the entrance (next to a small parking lot) which was the best place we found, but shame it was the last morning we were there!

We booked a double room on the top balcony overlooking the volcano. There was some noise at night- this is a party hostel, but as we were on the top balcony it didn't bother us at all. The room was big with air con. The bathroom was clean with hot water. No towels are in the room- you have to put a deposit on them downstairs which I thought was the only negative point of the hostel... The room was cleaned every day, and the staff also made us swan towels with flowers which was a nice touch!
The gardens were beautiful with great hammocks to hang out in. The bar was great, with friendly bar staff who make wonderful cocktails, we also ate dinner & breakfast here which were both good and well priced.
I have read some negative reviews of the staff on here- our experience was great. We got all our deposits back without having to ask. Also our car broke down whilst staying at the hostel, the staff were great and let us use their phone without charge and kept asking us whether everything was sorted. We were so thankful to them for this!
Would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it to our friends and family.

Room Tip: If you are a couple.. treat yourselves and spend a little extra to get a bedroom on the top balcony...

... otherwise they may try to cheat on you. The hostel asks a 5$ deposit for the key. We did so in the straightforward way. However, when we left, it turned out you need a receipt in order to get the 5$ back. The receptionist (who had a quite arrogant attitude, felt she was very important, and didn't feel the need to be at least a tiny little bit friendly to its customers) was quite consistent: we didn't have a receipt, we didn't get our 5$ back. Period. In the mean time, she was already helping other customers, not giving the impression she was willing to help us further. Of course, it's only 5$, but it's more a principal matter: after a heated discussion, and a lot of false accusations from the rude receptionist (such as "we didn't ask for a receipt so it is our fault", etc.), she finally give us the 5$ back. In the mean time, we felt obliged to remove the tip we left in our room (I'm sorry to the house keeper, she did a good job, but it was inappropriate to leave any more money at this place).

After visiting, we read other reviews including reports of fraudulent employees trying to cheat on the customers. These reviews give me a slight impression that the employees at the Arenal Hostel Resort have a second business running next to their daily job. What would be their next step? I wouldn't be confident leaving valuable stuff in my room then...

On the hostel itself, the garden with hammocks and bar looks quite nice. The kitchen is inconveniently located, seemingly to demotivate self-cooking. The rooms are basic, though a bit outdated (old aircons and hard mattresses). Beware there are lots of musquito's and there is no musquito net. The hostel is centrally located. I hope the owner of the hostel reads this review, fires his seemingly fraudulent employees, and makes it a reliable place to stay. For now, if it turns out that as a visitor you can't trust the accommodation, it looses all credibility (hence the poor rating).

Stayed here after staying here last year. Stayed in a dorm.

Beds good, bathrooms clean. Welcome drink provided on arrival which is nice.

Made to pay a key deposit ($5) which is a bit unnecessary.

Overall good. Friendly people staying here. Lockers a bit small but would recommend.

Nice hammocks to laze on in the gardens

This is a fun place, and especially great if you are traveling alone because there is a lot of young people around. We stayed in the dorms, which had six beds, and a clean bathroom with a huge shower--but not so warm water. I was excited that it also had air conditioning (finally!). The hammocks are wonderful, the kitchen is useful, and the pool is very small, but relaxing. I thought breakfast was overpriced (at $6), but dinner was reasonably priced given the region. My main complaint was that I didn't find the staff very friendly. They didn't provide very much information for cheap activities (the free hot springs, or hikes), and constantly pushed their tours on us (the owner of the hostel also owns a lot of property and restaurants around town for tours). The dinner recommendations were also very mediocre. If I returned to the region, I'm not sure if I would stay here again, but I wouldn't be adamantly opposed either.

Fantastic place to stay, though it was a little over our budget we heard good things and made a reservation. The dorm was spacious, clean, welcoming travelers in our dorm and a cool balcony overlooking town with rocking chairs. The garden had got huge hammocks, a swim up bar (free welcome drink), a kitchen with all you need. The owner had great knowledge of the touristy aspect of things. I thought towels were included en shower had descent hot water. We paid about $20 each for a dorm room. A great place to stay would definitely recommend. For the people who want to go to the free hot springs: it's not too far! Try to rent bikes or share a taxi which is about $40 return and everyone we spoke to wax disappointed they booked the paid version as those are swimming pools - the river (free) one is what most people expected
